Title: Non Interstate truck routes in your state.
Post by: Inyomono395 on February 15, 2016, 07:13:26 PM
As a lot of us know, Interstates are usually the most important truck routes, but at times US highways and state routes are also very important routes for through truck traffic.

Here is my list of non interstate truck routes in California.

US 6
US 101
US 395
CA 14
CA 58
CA 99

Am I missing any? What are some non interstate truck routes in your state?

Not my state anymore, but Truck 1-9 (US routes, but nobody says "Truck US 1-9") is a major thoroughfare in New Jersey that bypasses the Pulaski Skyway.

I don't believe Minnesota has any bannered truck routes. Superior, WI does along Winter St. as a bypass of US 2 and US 53, but as far as I know trucks are not banned from US 2 proper.

The thread isn't meant to be about bannered truck routes.  It's about routes that are meant for long-haul truck traffic but aren't interstates.

To answer the OP, most US routes that aren't in the shadow of interstates would qualify.  12, 97, and 395 are probably the biggest one in Washington, in addition to SR 20 and SR 410 (when the passes are open).  I don't know how busy US 101 is for truck traffic, since population tends to be pretty sparse on the coast in Washington and Oregon when compared to California.

(If the thread were about bannered truck routes, I'd think interstate ones would be more interesting -- meaning a far shorter list -- than non-interstates.  The only one I can think of off the top of my head is I-278 in Queens.)

US 1 north of Brunswick would qualify here as would ME 9 from Bangor to Calais.

In that case I think the primary Minnesota truck US/state routes would be:

US 2
US 14
US 52
US 169

MN 23

SD:
SD 79 (south of Rapid)
US 85 (north of Spearfish)

Other than those there's not a ton of non-interstate truck traffic... maybe US 14? The other four-lane highways in the state?

For California, I'd add:

US 199
US 50
CA 20
CA 70
CA 128
CA 29 (parts of this are even signed as truck routes)
CA 37
CA 4
CA 156 and sections of CA 1
CA 152 over Pacheco Pass

sure to be more...

Oh, ok then. For PA:

US 1
US 6
US 15
US 22
US 30
US 222
US 322
US 422
PA 283

Most of these routes haven't been supplant and another interstate is a good hour or more north/south/east/west.

I know this Wikipedia list will take the fun out of listing every state's truck routes, but it'll also show that the lists already presented here is just a fraction of the National Truck Network in those states...  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Network

Maybe we should have another thread about major truck routes that are not on the National Network?

Based on truck volumes, you can also include US 8, US 10 (bigger than most on your list), US 12 (east of Willmar), US 53, US 63 (south of Rochester), US 71, US 212, MN 15, MN 60 (west of Mankato), MN 65 (south of Mora), and MN 371.

Earlier in my career, I had to pour over maps that modeled freight traffic from NYSDOT's short-lived System Performance and Asset Management unit (and yes, the head of the unit called it SPAM).

In short, too many non-interstate truck routes in NY to count, but my favorite's NY 63, which truckers consider a shortcut to Buffalo if they're coming up I-390.  Truck traffic through there ticks off the locals to no end, but it's sort of interesting to contemplate that it's all due to a decision made decades ago to route I-390 the way it is now.

In Indiana, I'd certainly add US 6 and US 20. Even though the latter parallels the ITR, it carries a lot of truck traffic.

Do you mean truck routes that are bannered as truck routes?  Or just non-Interstate routes that all trucks can legally use?

Non interstate truck routes that trucks can legally use. Routes that carry long haul truck traffic.

New York has a bunch, along with fully-designated regional and local systems. Some major ones are as follows:

NY 63 (as posted above)
US 20 (as part of NY 63 shortcut and as Thruway shunpike)
US 11 north/east of I-781
NY 149 and US 4 between I-87 and the Vermont line
NY 7 east of I-87
NY 17 (duh)
US 219
NY 29
NY 27 (one of only 2 limited-access truck routes on Long Island)
NY 12
US 9 between the Cross Westchester and I-90 (main truck route on east side of the river, especially north of I-84)
NY 5 (shunpike)

(non Interstate routes used by trucks)

Michigan:

All US routes (even US 8, although that would be the least important)

M-6, M-10, M-14, M-24, M-28, M-37

Other mostly urban routes that are quite heavily used, as a "last-mile" (or more accurately the last 10 to 15 miles)  M-1, M-3, M-5, M-8, M-11, M-13, M-53, M-59

And as travel corridors to rural areas and small towns, most of the rest of the M routes.  Don't count M-185 (ha) and those few that are short drives to mostly recreational destinations.

But CA 86 past the Salton Sea and 111 to I-8 could pretty much be a bannered truck route. That's some of the only traffic that route gets.

What other routes allow speeds over 40 mph if you want to get from the Bay Area to the Santa Cruz-Capitola area?

Fair point.

But isn't CA 1 a freeway in the Santa Cruz area?

It is heading southeast, but it doesn't go far. From the end, you'd need to cut over to US 101 in Watsonville.

The point is that it's the only real way to get to Santa Cruz from civilization. CA 1 to the north hugs the coast and CA 9 gets you nowhere fast.

Santa Cruz to Watsonville is freeway, but that doesn't get you across the coast range.  Following 1 up to S.F. is beautiful, but slow and twisty and not recommended for trucks.  9 to Cupertino is also slow and twisty.  The less twisty way from Santa Cruz to San Jose would be south on 1 to Castroville, east on 156 to Prunedale, north on 101 to San Jose.  But that's the long way around, probably three times as long as 17.

Exactly. I think I've seen at least one 18-wheeler on that road each time I've driven it, except for the times at night (though I may have just missed it, because that road is pretty unnerving at night). 101 through Prunedale has a lot more truck traffic, certainly, but all the ag and other industries in Santa Cruz County mean that some just have to bite that bullet. At least, when you're finally over the hill on it, it makes the Valley traffic seem easy.

I've seen trucks take 1 to Watsonville, then hop on 129 to 101 north of San Juan Bautista. Longer route, but still better than Highway 17 over the Santa Cruz Mountains.

US 17 & 92 had one in Kissimmee that later became the mainline when US 17 & 92 were removed from Downtown Kissimmee.   Now its been resurrected using Osceola and John Young Parkways which really does not bypass anything.

In fact both US 441 and US 192 (the two other US routes cosigned with US 17 & 92 the whole entire route between the two truck ends) have no truck routes for themselves.
