Split from "Upstate NY thread - How do you define "downeast Maine"?
No idea but never made sense to me. Why "Downeast"?

How do you define "downeast Maine"?
I consider it to be as follows: the dividing line follows I-295/95 from Brunswick to Bangor, then ME 9 east to Calais. Anything east of 295/95 and south of 9 is downeast in my definition.

Between Brunswick and Bucksport is Mid-Coast, not Downeast. I'd say anything east of the Penobscot River, and anything south of ME 9 would be Downeast.
Then what's the rest - Upwest? ;)
I never heard about 'Downeast ME' until now. I had read 'Chicagoland' and 'Upstate NY' before so I was able to define them.

When you go north to Aroostook County, it's just "The County." :)

People forget that Maine is even a state sometimes. But Downeast is official enough to have the whole region highlighted on I-95...

From what I've gathered, there is no "official" definition of Downeast. A classmate of mine who's from Buxton defines it as ranging as far as Arcadia/Bar Harbor and even including Augusta.
Apparently it looks like I started a new trend on this board.
I'm just glad we're not arguing what "New England" means anymore.
