Title: Who has traveled on I-94?
Post by: _Demote on July 19, 2016, 02:47:00 AM
If you have traveled on I-94, tell me what part of the highway you have traveled on. (I live right next to I-94 maybe you passed my house :-P)

As for myself, I have traveled from Detroit to Chicago.

The three portions I've driven on:

1) The short concurrency with I-69 in Port Huron, MI
2) From I-69 near Marshall, MI to I-294 near Chicago (which passes Kalamazoo)  :)
3) From I-90 NW of downtown Chicago to the Loop

Ann Arbor (well, the US 23 interchange anyway) to Port Huron

Billings, Montana to Belfield, North Dakota and Monticello, MN to Port Huron, MI.  I'll probably clinch the rest of the route through North Dakota and Minnesota in June of 2017.

I lived in the Twin Cities for 37 years.  Almost the whole thing.  Didn't do the part in Michigan other than in Detroit itself but otherwise have done the whole road.   The North Dakota stretch is definitely one of the most boring roads I've ever been on.

All of it except the section between I-75 in Detroit to the Junction with I-69 near Port Huron

From 1969 to 1971, I could hear it from my house (so my mom tells me) as I lived on ML Ave in Comstock Park (I was born at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, by the way!)

Between 1978-1989 I had been on it many times in the Chicago area, or going to/from Michigan to/from Chicago, including an epic trip in a snow storm with my then fiancee in 1989 to Detroit from Chicago.

Been on all of it from just west of the US 10 terminus in West Fargo, ND to the east end at Port Huron. Driving the rest from Fargo to Billings next month.

Yep. Downtown Milwaukee to I-69 (which would have passed your house), and the section that's concurrent with I-39.
Title: Re: Who has traveled on I-94?
Post by: kphoger on July 19, 2016, 12:57:42 PM
I've driven all of it from downtown Chicago to downtown Detroit, as well as Madison (WI) to Saint Cloud (MN).  I've also ridden Greyhound on it from near O'Hare to Milwaukee, and I have hitchhiked on it from Paw Paw (MI) to South Holland (IL), switching rides in Benton Harbor.

I have been on it from I-69 to US-23 in Michigan and again from St. Joseph, MI to Milwaukee, WI.

Fargo (I-29) to Port Huron (Blue Water Bridge).  I take the section from South Holland (I-294/80) to Detroit often enough in addition to the Dan Ryan Expressway section.

As long as we're talking about I-94, why does it have a section near Chicago that is south of the 80/90 concurrency? That has always bothered me, since it puts 94 out of the grid alignment for a time.

I don't remember why that came about but, if you flipped the numbers around, then the Indiana Toll Road would change numbers for no good reason other than making OCD roadgeeks feel better.

If you go back to the pre-mid-1960s numbering, I-94 switched to the Toll Road at Burns Harbor, and followed the Toll Road and Skyway to the Ryan.  I-90 switched with I-80 at Burns Harbor and followed the Borman and Calumet Expressways to the Ryan.  In the mid-1960s, the numbering was simplified by keeping I-90 on the Toll Road, and I-94 on the Tri-State Highway/Borman Expressway.

By the way, it is never south of the I-80/90 concurrency (with the exception of the 1/4 mile needed for the interchange) as I-80 switches from the Toll Road to the Borman when I-94 crosses the Toll Road.  East -> I-94 and I-80/90; West -> I-90 and I-80/94.

That is weird. It doesn't really make it the northernmost east to west interstate then.

Nope.  The northernmost east-west Interstate highway would be A2 in Alaska.  Ignoring the ones in Alaska, I-96 is north of I-94 in Michigan, so the Indiana Toll Road is irrelevant as far as that goes.

But, be that as it may, I-94 is south of I-90 for a grand total of, what? 29 miles.  I'd say that hardly "makes it" anything.

I've driven on it in Michigan between I-69 and US 23 and a stretch or two in west Detroit, near Chicago between I-65 and I-294 and a short stretch near Skokie, and in Wisconsin where it overlaps I-90. I've also ridden on I-94 on some other stretches in Chicago and maybe in the Twin Cities.

I've been on I-94 from MN 23 at St. Cloud to I-494 near Anoka, from Portage, WI to the eastern US 127 junction near Jackson, MI, from M-52 to east of M-39, and from I-75 to I-696 in the Detroit area. If it weren't for a bad snowstorm that night and a traffic accident, I'd have filled in the gap between M-52 and US 127.

I-94 portions traveled:
     (1) West terminus (Billings) to east I-494/694 interchange east of St. Paul, MN.
     (2) Tomah, WI (I-90 merge) to Edens Expwy/I-294 split near Chicago.
     (3) I-90 merge (NW Expwy) to MI 14 near Ann Arbor.
     (4) I-69 concurrency near Port Huron, crossing into Canada.

I've been on Interstate 94 in the following sections:

2) between Downtown Minneapolis (exit 231B) to Wisconsin State Highway 29 (exit 52).
3) between I-90/94 split up in Tomah, WI (exit 147) to Business Interstate 94 in Ann Arbor, MI (exit 172).

I can say I've driven the whole thing. I can't say much exciting about it, except miles and miles on nothing. Not even an interchange or turn on my GPS.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.devaldragon.com%2FYears%2F2016%2FAlaska%2FUp%2FGPS.jpg&hash=7f13dcc984a83552c2907b28ffd9f15d5b289d61)

I'm almost surprised it didn't say anything about I-29 in Bismark ND.

I have been only on parts in Chicago.  From the I-90 split in the north to the I-57 junction in the south.

The rest of Chicagoland I did from US 41 at the Edens down to where Cicero splits, and then from the Edens to Milwaukee going North (or signed west).

In Michigan I used it once from the Bluewater Bridge to I-75 in Detroit, and then the piece overlapped with US 31 as we all know the story about the missing St. Joseph Valley Parkway link.

Since I just posted in the sign collecting thread...I even have an I-94 as part of my personal collection.  It's a weird 18x18 that came off a guide sign out of Minnesota, I got it along with an I-35 off the same guide...both still have some rivets even.  Strange to find a shield smaller than the 24x24, especially on a guide sign of all things.

I've driven the road from MT 47 in rural Montana 50 miles east of Billings to the US 12 Ypsilanti exit in Ann Arbor. Given that I've driven 80% of the road without seeing either terminus, clinching it will be a big PITA for me. Last year I had hoped to get to the Billings end, but running out of time and at the time feeling tired I had to cut the corner at Hardin and take MT 47 to shave off that 100 miles. :(

1. West terminus in Billings to the I-94/I-694 interchange north of Minneapolis, with possible pieces missing as one goes west from the MN 15 interchange by St. Cloud, MN (I was a kid then and don't really remember where my dad decided he had to exit and enter the interstate, not to mention parts which may have not yet been built, but I believe for sure I don't have a chunk of I-94 in the Fargo-Moorhead area)
2. MN 55 on the west side of downtown Minneapolis to the Indiana Toll Road interchange in NW Indiana
3. MI 60 by Jackson to Jackson Avenue interchange in Ann Arbor
4. State Street interchange in Ann Arbor to Telegraph Road (US 24)

Gotta say that I-94 between I-294 and I-65 may be my least favorite stretch of interstate in the country. When we lived in Indiana, that was always the part of the drive to Chicago that I dreaded. Not the Dan Ryan, not that horrible and boring stretch of 65, but this little ride through the industrial wasteland. 8 million trucks in 10 lanes, and you've gotta get over quickly.

The stretch from Billings into North Dakota (I've only gone as far as Jamestown) is nice if you can appreciate the nuances of the Great Plains. I could see why some would also hate that roadway though.

With the exception of the north-south segment between downtown Minneapolis and the beltline, I've "traveled" I-94 from Billings, MT to Beton Harbor, MI (I-196).

I've driven Bismark to I-694 and I-494/694 to exit 30 in Benton Harbor (US 31 south).

From the western terminus at Billings to the Indiana Toll Road. Some day I need to drive it NE of the Toll Road into Michigan and clinch the eastern terminus.

Only a couple miles in downtown Chicago. I was on a tour bus.

Edit: also I-294 from Elmhurst to the ITR, which is also I-94 so I guess about 20 miles worth in total.

I've been on a good deal of it, but not all.  I can specifically remember being on it between Tomah and Black River Falls (WI).  I've also been on it for a stretch between the 94/43 junction (south side of Milwaukee, WI) and Pleasant Prairie, WI.

When I was nine, we took a trip out west to SD/WY/ND, and I'm certain we got on somewhere in west or central ND and then, with the exception of stopping at the Mall of America, didn't get off 94 until US 10 or WI-21 or somewhere.  I don't exactly remember, though, considering I was nine and didn't really care much.

So in short, a good deal of it, but I haven't clinched it yet.  One of my goals is to clinch at least one Interstate, though.

That's a really tough one for me, because I live close to I-94 (in South Bend). I've had many occasions to travel various parts of the route over the years, but rarely have I driven more than 50-100 miles in one stretch. Adding it all together, I think I've driven everything between Minneapolis and Detroit, except for the stretch between Madison and Oconomowoc. I went to a conference years ago at a resort in Oconomowoc, but I don't think I ever had a reason to go beyond that. We have traveled the Madison to Minneapolis portion, but got there via the Northwest Tollway (excuse me, the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway).

Also, did the Mineapolis to Fargo segment last week in the middle of the night after landing at MSP at 12:30am the night of the Delta computer outage. Not fun...

Drove it in Michigan between the Wayne Road exit just east of I-275 and Ypsilanti. My family also commuted on I-94 in that area when we lived in Belleville at the Belleville Manor mobile home park off of Belleville Road during the early 1990's.

I still have family spread out through the Detroit suburbs so I still drive on I-94 whenever I visit. Last time I drove it was in 2013.

At some point or another, I have been on I-94 from Milwaukee to Detroit, but not East beyond Macomb County...The only part that I'm coming up a "maybe not" on is I can't remember if I've driven the full length of the Bishop Ford Fwy -- I've been on parts of it, certainly...And thinking about it more, I can't remember if I took I-94 from Ann Arbor to Macomb County (heading to Sterling Heights from Chicago), or if I used other Metro Area Freeways to get there...its been almost a decade since I made that drive. But I know I've been on I-94 from Downtown Detroit up to about New Baltimore

And then further North and West, on the Wisconsin I-90/94 Duplex between Madison and Tomah (on the way to Rochester, MN)

Between Jamestown, ND (US 52-281) and Madison where it splits off from I-39/90 except for a 2-mile area in MN between Exits 158-160

Between the Kennedy split with I-90 in Chicago to Exit 40 (US 20/35) in Indiana

Between US 24 and US 12 (Exit 210) in Detroit.

Then pick it back up from where it meets I-80/Tri-state all the way through to Ann Arbor, MI. It's the interstate I've frequented the second most, following I-294.

Somehow, I've never been on the Edens (I-94 between Northbrook, IL and Chicago's north side).  As for the rest:

Milwaukee, WI; being of the top level of an interchange to stay on I-94 really made vertigo kick in
south of Milwaukee, WI; was forced off the highway due to a road closure the first time, smooth trip the second
Lake County, IL; traffic wasn't too heavy, but the speeding was absolutely ridiculous
Chicago (Kennedy); an overloaded road with too many exits and entrances
Chicago (Ryan); absolute misery every time
Chicago (Ford); still plenty of pain here, especially if I try to go from Stony Island to I-57, but mostly just lots of traffic
IL/IN border area; like driving in a video game.  Trucks in lanes they're not allowed in, people weaving in and out, random backups...
Southeast suburbs (IN); stay in the left lane anywhere west of I-65 if you hope to actually get anywhere
Rest of IN; smooth ride
New Buffalo, MI; last time by, this really needed a repaving

Unfortunately, I-94 is a terrible experience between the north side of Chicago and Lake Station, IN.  The rest has its flaws, but it isn't nearly as bad.

I know this is old, but I might note that I-94 doesn't go through Janesville; it splits from I-90 well north of there. I think you meant Madison.  :D

In any case, I also have traveled that segment of I-94 (Fargo to Madison)* as well as (a) the multiplex with I-90 in downtown Chicago, and (b) in Michigan, the segment from the Canadian border at Port Huron to Dearborn.

*I don't think I've clinched the segment between downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis, but I've done everything else between Fargo and Madison - much of it multiple times.

I think the worst stretch of I-94 is between Benton Harbor and Ann Arbor, two lanes in each direction of nothing but truck traffic on a pothole ridden highway. But the stretch you mentioned is a pretty bad experience too. I honestly think though that I-94 needs to be rebuilt from New Buffalo to Port Huron.

But the stretch you mentioned is a pretty bad experience too. I honestly think though that I-94 needs to be rebuilt from New Buffalo to Port Huron.

Four lanes as it might be the roadway is nowhere near as bad as I remember it (having recently drove it) aside from the disaster that is the stretch in Jackson.

I've driven back and forth to Chicago so much I've lost count. It's pretty bad in the Kalamazoo area, the closer you get to Detroit the worse it gets. I-94 is so bad that I've started to go out to US-131 and drop down to I-196 to avoid most of it. I-196 is four lanes too but it doesn't have as much traffic as I-94 does.

I had the benefit of using I-69 to avoid much of it when I lived in Lansing heading towards Chicago.  No doubt the traffic count warrants six lanes but what surprised me is the road condition aside from Jackson was no where near as bad as I remember it.  Granted it has been two decades since I regularly drove that stretch but the Jackson portion seemed to be what used to be much more the norm.

Lansing is my quarter way mark to Chicago with Kalamazoo being the halfway mark so I've used I-69 between Lansing and Marshall lots of times that's how I get to I-94 going out that direction usually. It was always fine until I got to I-94, the stretch of I-69 between Lansing and Marshall but once you get on I-94 it's nothing but major truck traffic and I remember potholes being in the road in areas.

The way I look at it is like this, I-94 between Chicago and Detroit is a major truck route with a lot more traffic going in between both cities. I suppose you could take US-12 which of course would take a lot more time or drop down to I-80/90 which is a lot nicer than I-94.

From Detroit especially US 12 is a very viable if not somewhat scenic alternate to I-94.  Originally I lived out by Willow Run Airport which made US 12 an easy exit out of he I-94 corridor until the New Buffalo area close to the Indiana State Line. Really the only times it was probably worth avoiding in favor of I-94 was when Michigan International Speedway was holding an event, but that could mostly be avoided by passing the track via US 127 in Jackson.

I wouldn't disagree with that at all. US-12 is very scenic especially in the Irish Hills area. Going back in history most of US-12 in Michigan at one time was US-112 and US-12 followed most of what I-94 is today. It can be a good alternate route if you get off at exit 181 and go west from there but the only thing is that US-12 doesn't have any bypass routes for the small towns it goes through like Saline and Jonesville. And you're right about the events at MIS if there is an event there the best thing would be to take I-94 to US-127 and bypass the area like you said. Honestly I know this is a bit off topic but since we're in the same area I have always found US-223 to be pretty useless at least for me.

The only real occasion I ever had to use US 223 was when I was purposefully taking photographs of it's weird terminus in Ohio.  I didn't even stay on US 223 but used US 23 from there to reach Brighton for the night.  IMO US 223 should have gotten the axe as a US Highway a long time ago.

What's really interesting about the original US 12 isn't just I-94 but the fact that the M-14 corridor is essentially its successor east of Ann Arbor.  When US 27 was being decommissioned in Michigan I was hoping the same logic that ran with routing US 12 over US 112 would apply but sadly it did not and now US 127 exists north of Lansing.

I agree it should be a state highway at the very most. US-223 was actually originally US-127 which at that time started in Lansing and ended in Toledo and then US-127 was rerouted to a state highway (the current US-127 south of the US-223 split) to the state line and then to Cincinnati. It makes perfect sense too because US-127's roadway actually continues as US-223's roadway, US-127 traffic having to stay to the right to stay on that highway. US-223 was also realigned to run on M-151's former routing in the 1970's and US-223 use to use Memorial Highway and current OH-51 to get to downtown Toledo. At that point is probably when it should have been scaled back to a state highway, the concurrency with US-23 is pointless but I guess I can say it does at least end at US highways on both ends.

And yep US-12 use to run on Plymouth Road in Detroit instead of Michigan Avenue and use to end at US-16 at the corner of Plymouth and Grand River and then later ran concurrently with US-16 into downtown. That entire route of course was rerouted onto Old US-112 and the Old US-12 east of Ann Arbor of course became M-14 which explains why M-14 was on Plymouth Road for a time until being scaled back to end at the I-275/96 interchange. I'm actually surprised I know all this because I wasn't even born until 1979 but I've done plenty of studying on Michigan highways that I know a lot of things before I was born.

I'm not sure if I could find any of these signs anymore but the State Highway Department (before MDOT) went and just simply blocked out the first 1 on the US-112 signs to make it US-12 leaving only an off-center "12" on the highway shields between New Buffalo and Detroit.

Regarding US-27 and US-127 I was hoping that they would switch those two routes north of Cincinnati and have US-127 end in Fort Wayne and US-27 end at I-75 near Grayling but nope they had to go the other way. Just something about having a two digit highway rather than a three makes it feel different. US-27 certainly wouldn't of been out of the grid either.

States are not going to spend millions of dollars re-signing US 27 and US 127 just because roadgeeks want US 27 to be the longer highway.

What difference would that of made 20 years ago when they made the change? US-27 was already north of Lansing and needed all those signs changed. And it's not like states haven't and don't reroute highways.

And the reason Michigan did that was because US-27 already had an extremely long concurrency with I-69 and they thought it caused confusion which it actually didn't but oh well it's not anything I really care about. And it's not about wanting US-27 to be a longer highway it's that US-27 is the highway that ran up the center of Michigan, not US-127. US-27 ran up as far as Cheboygan, Mackinaw City and for a few years St. Ignace.

I can see (and hear) I-94 (which is the Tri-State Tollway here) from my office window.  I'm 6 miles from the Edens Spur.

I drive on I-94 between Route 60 in Illinois and Highway 165 in Wisconsin every day, approximately 20 miles each way.

When I was in college I used to take the bus quite often between Madison and Milwaukee, so I became quite familiar with some of the notable stops along I-94 such as Lake Mills, Johnson Creek, Summit, and Goerkes Corners.

The bus service I use (Badger Bus) doesn't even stop at Summit. Maybe they do at Lake Mills, but I don't remember. I know sometimes they stop at Johnson Creek and Goerkes Corners, because my bus has stopped there before.

I took Badger Bus, too, but that was about 30 years ago.  If I remember correctly, there was an "express" bus  from Madison a few times a day that only dropped people off at Goerkes Corners, State Fair Park and downtown, but if you missed the express they normally stopped to drop off and pick up people at all of the places I mentioned.  So on Friday afternoons when I went home for the weekend I had to get there early to get in line for the express bus.  The Badger Bus station in Madison used to be on the south corner of Bedford and West Wash, I think there's a CVS Pharmacy and apartments or condos there now.  The express bus from downtown Milwaukee back to Madison on Sunday evening didn't make any stops.

There's also a U-Haul depot on that corner as well. All of the intercity buses stop in front of Memorial Union now (except Greyhound, which I think stops at the Dutch Mill park and ride).

Of course, I have driven on I-94 for its entire length, but not on the same trip.

Fargo to Madison
Milwaukee to Michigan City
Ann Arbor to Detroit

I have since added Jackson, MI to Michigan City, IN with the exception of the parts around Kalamazoo and St. Joseph/Benton Harbor (where I got off and drove through the downtowns)

I was on a good chunk of it during my road trip to Duluth. My family didn't want to buy plane tickets lol.

I always found it odd that I-69 multiplexed I-94 to a common terminus at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron:

I've been on it from Madison to Eau Claire, in Chicago from I-57 to where I-90 splits off toward O'Hare, and also some bits in the Twin Cities.

Drove the Benton Harbor to Mattawan segment of I-94 for the first time a couple of weeks ago. IMO, that stretch is fine with two lanes each way

It might seem fine on a given day or because it's in a rural area but that area can generate a lot of traffic. That part isn't as bad as the part between Jackson and Kalamazoo especially the closer you get to Kalamazoo but it really should be six lanes in the areas where it's currently four lanes. It's just the Detroit-Chicago traffic generates a lot of truck traffic.

I drove I-94 from the Tri-State to the I-196 split last night and it was traffic hell from the Tri-State to around Cline Ave. I almost got cut off by a truck coming out of the Southside oasis. There were constant slowdowns and that doesn't even mention the trucks running in the two left lanes (which is illegal through that stretch). At least I missed the honey spill from earlier yesterday. Despite the toll road being one lane through East Chicago due to construction and the Skyway being very expensive, I much prefer I-90 over I-80/I-94 through NW Indiana and the south side of Chicago.

Without looking I think it's 5 extra miles from Lake Station to 63rd Street in Chicago by taking I-80/94 and then just I-94 vs. taking I-90 The Skyway. I don't know anyone that would want to add on 5 extra miles when you don't have to with Chicago's traffic. I think the $9 to cross the bridge (I think that's the toll) is worth it but it sucks that they have to charge a toll just to cross a bridge.

It's not just any bridge--it's THE CHICAGO SKYWAY!!!   :-/

So if you were watching helicopter coverage of that honey spill you could see my house, so I feel I have some pretty good insight on I-94.  It is 4 miles longer to go from the I-90/94 junction in Lake Station to the Skyway/Ryan junction in Chicago.  The 2 axle toll for the Skyway is $5 with an additional $1 toll for the ITR in Hammond.

There are two reasons why 94 gets so much more traffic.  The first is that a lot of the traffic is through traffic going to/from I-80, so the Skyway isn't an option, or the traffic is local to towns along 94, in which case the Skyway is longer and slower, unless there is a major accident on 94.  The second is that while a $6 toll isn't so bad if you are only traveling to the city occasionally, if you are a daily commuter, that adds up to $60/week, and taking the longer and more congested route may be a necessity.

Don't forget there's an approximate $2.40 for Westpoint in addition to the toll at Lake Station. The total two-axle tolls for someone using an I-PASS (including the three cent surcharges at each plaza) for that stretch one-way would total $8.74.

The toll at Lake Station is only for travel east of Lake Station.  If you are going from Chicago to Lake Station, it's just the $5 at the Skyway and the $1 at Westpoint.

But it isn't $1 at Westpoint. And the toll at Lake Station is paid by those entering westbound and exiting eastbound. My own I-PASS log can confirm that. So if a commuter uses the ITR and Skyway consistently as a route from Lake Station, given a five-day workweek, that person will be out just about $85 each week. EZPass users no longer pay the ITR rates which dated back to 1985, and it seems like the Skyway toll will only ever go up (currently it's $5.30 for two-axles). The financial incentive is there for using the Bishop Ford.
