Title: Shields with "too many" prefixes
Post by: epzik8 on August 10, 2016, 01:10:13 PM
I caught the following sign yesterday in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Talk about information overload.

What I mean by "prefixes" are the notations above the actual U.S. 30 shield - "END ALTERNATE TRUCK BUSINESS WEST". So I got inspired by the sine salad thread to start this thread because it's similar to the "sine salad" phenomenon but only involves one sign, so I just decided not to put it in the sine salad thread. But anyway, if anyone else has a picture like this one please post it.

That might be a winner for most banners. Somebody else posted a pic of an assembly in TN with a lot of banners, but I forgot how many.

It was a TN 385 shield with "END NORTH BEGIN WEST [385 shield]". Four banners, so it would be 2nd place.

So then, would we call that a "sign sandwich", then? One main ingredient, but a whole lot of toppings, Dagwood-style? Perhaps we just call it a "Bumstead sign"?

Nope.  Based on individual sign plates, he's tied.  Both NE2's photo & this one have 6 plates.

At the risk of splitting hairs, the original poster mentioned "banners".

Yeah, I was trying to be generous with the directional arrow at the bottom of NE2's counting.

I really hope that's US 30A, US 30B and US 30T all converging on the same end point vs it being US 30BAT.

I looked at the Wikipedia article on US 30 in Pennsylvania. Found nothing.

Then I looked at the article on bannered routes of US 30. It is US 30BAT. US 30 Business is the road in the background.

Tip to all people: When quoting posts with images, you can halve the width and height, and people won't have to scroll as much through copies of the same image.

But, to me, "ALTERNATE TRUCK BUSINESS 30" implies that...

(1) There is a Business 30,
(2) Truck traffic on Business 30 is diverted onto Truck Business 30, and
(3) That truck traffic has an alternate route, i.e. Alternate Truck Business 30.

Are you saying that, in this instance, ALTERNATE and TRUCK are supposed to be synonymous?

"alternate truck" is PennDOT's janky way of signing recently-designated truck routes. It's really just a truck route around an old bridge (?) on US 30 Business.

So, really, 'ALTERNATE' should simply be removed from the assembly.
