Title: Nets to catch falling concrete from bridges
Post by: peterj920 on August 24, 2016, 12:30:13 AM

This is a bridge over the Anhappee State Trail on County E in Kewaunee, WI.  A net was installed on the sides and the bottom to catch falling concrete so they do not hit trail users.  The bridge only has a 10 ton weight limit so it will probably be replaced soon.  Any other crumbling bridges that have nets?

Always nice to see that investment.

I've seen them driving around Montreal, and you can also see lots of exposed rebar. In particular, the Turcot interchange is in bad shape, though thankfully the interchange is being reconstructed.

Until it was torn down last year, the Blodgett Rd. Overpass on I-55, just north of the Kankakee River in Illinois had boards between the beams to keep concrete from falling to the interstate below.

How about a bridge to catch a bridge?

Many Michigan bridges have plywood sheets installed on the undersides to catch concrete falling from deteriorating decks.

Still there when I lasted visited Pittsburgh, which was a month ago.

The US 40 bridges  on I-81 near Hagerstown MD have some nets below them, and this is being fixed. The same is being done with the MD 58 bridges.

Why not a net under a roller coaster (the funny thing is is that this is only 15 years old and doesn't look that bad)?

Couldn't have been, the entire thing was demolished just after Christmas this past year.

(There's already a StreetView recent enough (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.428557,-79.9368261,3a,60y,254.64h,85.43t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJHQ2oCRxALRIL9ZBItDQOQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) to show that it's all gone.)

Oh. I was thinking of another bridge.

Maybe they're there to catch the bodies.

Or to catch things people fail to secure or throw off of them. I was hit in the head by a blackberry that fell out of someone's pocket on a rollercoaster once. There is now a net above where I was standing. I also had a friend lose keys on a coaster... My understanding is a lot of people try to pull out cameras or cell phones to take selfies and end up losing them

Bingo.
