Title: Longest Interstate Clinched NON-STOP??
Post by: thenetwork on September 18, 2016, 09:02:59 PM
Here's a fun highway clinching challenge READ CAREFULLY:

What is the longest interstate that you clinched COMPLETELY in one non-stop trip?

"Non-Stop" is defined as completing the entire trip:

- Remaining on the main carriageway
- No Exiting/Entering the interstate mid-stream
- No rest break, food stop, potty break, refuel,...

My personal best, clinched this summer: Interstate 76 (Western Segment) -- 188 Miles. (I consider this as a complete clinch as the two segments, though they share a common route number, were never intended to be connected). Ergo, duplicate, never-connecting routes (including 3ds, for that matter) are eligible as well.

Honorable mention, my personal best for about a day and a half:  Interstate 88 (Illinois) -- 140 Miles and a hell of a lot of $$ in tolls!!!

Others??

For me, I-435 at 95th St in Lenexa to I-70 west from Bonner Springs to Salina.

169 miles.

Re-read the requirements:  We are looking for a complete end-to-end segment of an interstate.  For an I-70 clinch, you would have to travel the entire distance of I-70 from Cove Fort, UT to Baltimore, MD without stopping.  You want to focus on shorter (likely 500 mile or less) interstates that can be completed on a single tank of gas or less.

Would a entire segment of a discontigous interstate count?

In '14, I traveled the entire northern segment of I-49 from just north of Pineville, Missouri up to KCMO.

Probably I-90(The Pike), Boston, to Cleveland, OH to I-71.Did refule at the service area on the Thruway on the service are between Rochester and Syracuse.Straight shot from there unless you count I-71 from Cleveland to Lexington, KY via I-75 of course (topped off tank in Cleveland before leaving).

So far with my learner's permit the only Interstate I've clinched fully at all, let alone in one trip, is I-283 in Harrisburg, not that it's a particularly hard Interstate to do so with.

Impossible; I-90 can't be clinched without refueling; you said yourself that you did so!

I've done I-76 west, I-82, I-86 west, and maybe I-17 as far as 2dis. 76 west would be my record as well. Did it in May of 2007 without stopping.

76 West is kind of perfect for this activity - it's long but not so long that you would need to stop for gas, there's really nothing to see along the stretch, and it's usually driven in the context of a much longer roadtrip with Denver metro as the origin or the destination (meaning people would want to just push through and not stop one more time). Probably the biggest place for failure is those folks who clinched almost all of it in one sitting, but not the I-70 to I-25 segment. In my case, I was driving from Morrison to Des Moines, so it was perfect.

It took a bit of thinking but I'm pretty sure the western I-86 is the only 2di I have done this with also the longest overall.

Not the sort of thing I'd really explicitly attempt to do, so it would have to be a case of it just happening to work out that way.

Without thinking it through too carefully, I expect my winner is eastern I-88's 120 or so miles.  I'm sure I've done that with no stops a few times.  I drove I-37 in one shot, but there was probably a stop in there.  I probably have 6 or so of them in the 50-100 mile range, like I-12 and a handful of the longer 3dis (I-275 FL, I-295 NJ/DE are among the longest where I'm confident I've done this).  It's not something I've tried to do on purpose.

Pretty sure the family minivan took all of Georgia's I-475 non-stop several times on trips to Florida when I was growing up.

My friend Erica drove the entire length of Ohio's I-670 eastbound non-stop while I took pictures, on the first day it was possible to do so, in September 2003. I've done it myself several times since then.

In the last five years as part of my job, I've done I-271 southbound once, I-470 westbound a few times, and I-675 in both directions several times.

Though I did get both the MO and NW AR sections of I-49 one day, I had to stop for gas in Nevada, MO.

In 1999, when it was the only section officially commissioned & signed:  I-49 between Shreveport & Lafayette, on a single-day trip from Broken Bow, OK to New Orleans.  Fueled up off I-20 in Shreveport, refueled on US 167 a block or two south of the I-10 interchange.

I've done I-4, but stopped at the rest area.  So I didn't leave the right-of-way, but it probably still breaks the first and third of the OP's bullet points.

I've done I-405 (WA) multiple times without stopping at all though.  30 miles isn't that impressive, but probably my longest nonstop clinch for this thread.

I-494 and I-694. Once spent two and a half hours traveling the entire beltway around the Twin Cities without stopping.

Another time I drove the whole length of the Twin Cities' I-35W. I've traveled the whole length of I-35E but not in one non-stop trip.

I've also done the whole length of I-394, but I cannot remember if that was all at once or not.

I've done the 14 miles of I-235 in Des Moines as well.

All of interstate 57, at least once, southbound.
Close but not quite one: Interstate 84. Due to there being no Pilot Travel Centers anywhere in MA other than i-84, and the nearest customer to a pilot is in Pembroke NH...i normally top off at Sturbridge MA, so i can do a quick turn in NH.

Easy ones.

I68,I78,I22,I27,Future i-72 in MO,Indiana East-West Toll Road (service plazas suck, and i cannot get diesel there for the truck),Western KY Parkway, Bluegrass Parkway, Pennyrile Parkway, and the i-69 segments of each. I24 between I-57 and the GA state Line once. Mass Pike.

It depends on whether you consider I-88 in Illinois clinched if you end up taking the I-294 north exit instead of going straight onto I-290.  If not, I believe it is the Iowa/Nebraska I-680, at 43 miles.

I was going to say I-24 overnight on a bus (school trip to Florida), but then I remembered we stopped at the welcome centers at the TN/KY border both ways.

It should be I-88 Illinois, but I'm not sure if I've ever gone without stopping in DeKalb. I suppose that makes my longest I-294, then. 54 miles.

I-470 in Topeka (less than 14 miles long) and in Lee's Summit (16 3/4 miles long). Both are within 67 miles of each other. Probably the closest unrelated 3di's with the same number.

I-670 in Kansas City (less than 2 miles long)

I-635 in Kansas City (12 miles long)

If it's completely in one pass, no stops or exiting? No 2-digit interstates for me. I-84 is the only one I've completed, but never all at once since A- I live within 3 miles of it and B- Sturbridge, MA to Dunmore, PA is quite a hike!

If talking 3-digit interstates?

I-278 (NY/NJ)
I-290 (MA)
I-291 (CT and MA)
I-293 (NH)
I-295 (ME)
I-384 (CT)

I-68 several times.

Also I-99 and the eastern I-88. Can't count I-66 because of the temptation of the Haymarket Sheetz.

Can't remember if my clinch of I-12 was non-stop or not.

I've also done I-97 but it's hardly the longest.

I've clinched a number of 3di's nonstop, including a complete counterclockwise circumnavigation of DC on I-495.

Either I-4 or the Delaware/New Jersey I-295. I'm not sure about I-4, but I know I've done this on I-295.

I-68 comes close, but the only time I've been all the way to the west end, we made a toilet stop at the West Virginia welcome center and that violates the thread rules.

Even though I live in Wichita, I've never gone from endpoint to endpoint on I-135. That would require coming down from I-70 and then continuing on the Turnpike towards Oklahoma (or the other way round). I've never had reason to do that.

My longest would have to be I-88 in Illinois, continuing onto the Eisenhower towards Chicago, but that's been a good 17 years now.

I've also one-shot clinched I-35W through Fort Worth eight times, I-35W through Minneapolis once, I-335 in Kansas once or twice, and I-635 around KC countless times. I probably did I-27 in Texas with my dad back in high school a couple of times, but my memory of fuel and meal stops back then is fuzzy.

Depends on if I'm the driver or the passenger. If passenger counts, I-82 would be the winner for me (143 mi). If we're talking me as the driver, besides I-82 (which I've driven about 98% of myself but not clinched), I've only really driven on long 2dis. You're not gonna clinch I-84 (W), I-90, or I-5 in one non-stop sitting. I've only been on I-86 (W) as a passenger so that one's out.

So, for me as a driver, that leaves 3dis. I-205 comes to mind, but I've never driven it end-to-end in one sitting, so that's out. I-405 (OR), only time I use that is to access US-26/Sunset Highway, so that's out. So that leaves the measly short ones: I-105 (OR) - 3.5 mi, and what I suppose is the winner, which I also happen to clinch non-stop nearly every day, I-184 (3.6 mi). Yeah, pretty lame winner  :-/ But add up all the times I've clinched it and it's a large number :D.

Others I've clinched at once:

I-276 (PA)
I-280 (NJ)
I-395 (MD)
I-495 (DE)
I-684 (NY)
I-691 (CT)
I-695 (NY)
I-695 (DC)
I-787 (NY)

Also, if we're counting unsigned interstates, then I-595 (MD).  If we're counting things that are recognized in some places as interstates but signed as state routes, then I-878 (NY).

I-210 California, back when its eastern end was at the Kellogg Interchange with I-10, CA 57 and 71. Technically, it's still valid as the 210 extension is CA 210, not I-210...
Can't count I-205 California because of a construction detour.
I-505
I-405 Oregon
I-705
I-210 Louisiana
I-510

Personal Best: December 1998, I-70 from Clifton Exit 37 to Kipling Street Exit 267. Total 230 miles non-stop. In a 1974 Mercury Cougar XR-7.

That's not a clinch.

You are correct. Despite being told to "READ CAREFULLY" right in the OP, apparently I did not read the OP carefully enough and misunderstood the premise of this thread. I humbly acknowledge my error. (I still think 230 miles non stop is pretty impressive though.)

Probably my longest "clinch" following the rules of the OP would be I-280 (CA) at 57 miles.

I just remembered I-865 is its own Interstate now, and it would be awkward to do that one without clinching it non-stop. And I've done it at least once.

I-335 in Kansas is like this.  It goes through zero towns between endpoints.  I have, however, stopped at a median service area at least once.  Speaking of this, how many of y'all have clinched I-238 without doing it in one shot–i.e. getting gas at Mission Blvd or stopping at the Jack-in-the-Box (not on Glenoaks, where they keep the pools of old poison gas and obsolete germ bombs) for lunch.

238 is defined as one road for the purpose of California's legislative route definitions, but I-238 is particularly distinct (as one needs to turn off from Route 238 north to reach I-238 west, and vice versa from I-238 east to Route 238 south).

I-680 southbound (71 miles)
I-880 southbound (45 miles)

I  have certainly done them both Northbound non-stop. If you were of a mind to, you could certainly do SB I-680 and NB I-280 back-to-back non-stop. With only a brief interuption by a few hundred meters of surface streets and the Bay Bridge, you could then do SB I-880 in the same non-stop trip.
I-580 has a routing (Central Valley to Marin via Oakland) such that it is unlikely to be traversed non-stop except by someone deliberately trying to accomplish the feat, but, for all I know, some truckers might do it every day (but isn't there a truck restiction on some part of it in Oakland?).

Yes, there's a truck restriction on 580.  There have been times it was lifted, such as when 880 was closed post-Loma Prieta.  Anyone who's clinched 580 in a truck should raise their hand.

There are people who drive between the Central Valley and Marin, and for them 580 would be the obvious way to go.

Exactly. As a former resident of Corte Madera, I would clinch I-580 nonstop nearly every time I'd drive to the Central Valley (and usually, that was part of driving to L.A.).

Other Bay Area Interstates that were also usually a guaranteed non-stop clinch:

I-205
I-505
I-238
I-780
I-980

I-880 was a frequent "close, but no cigar"  as I'd often start in Emeryville and exit somewhere in San Jose just shy of the southern terminus.

I almost messed up and said I-4, but I never got that little bit west of I-75.

I almost messed up and said I-16, but I never got that little bit east of I-95, and I also seem to remember stopping to piss along there somewhere anyways.

I almost messed up and said I-290 (IL) but I lived off the Higgins Rd (IL-72) exit so I never went from the tollway all the way to the Post Office in one sitting.

So in the literal sense of the OP I can say, none. Which is a shame, because my longest distance traveled non-stop is 483 miles from I-95 Exit 3 in Kingsland, Ga to the Shell station on US-17 south near River Bend, NC.

My answer is disappointing, and probably the shortest.  It's I-345 at 1.4 miles.  Other than my home area, the Interstates I use are almost all too long to run non-stop.  Nearby, I-30 and I-45 would be possible, but I've never done a full run of either.  The Dallas and Fort Worth Interstate loops, and branches of I-35, if those count, would be fairly easy, but I've never had a reason to drive from one end to the other of any of them.

The truck restriction covers the MacArthur Freeway portion, originally built as US 50 (and then first signed as US 50/I-5W) in the late 1950s.  Though the route has been Interstate standard for pretty much the entire time, I recall that the restriction was put in place as a continuation of existing truck restrictions along the MacArthur corridor before the freeway was there.

I-238 to I-880 has been the default truck route between the MacArthur Maze and Hayward/Castro Valley for decades, though the MacArthur Freeway does allow truck traffic on an emergency basis if 880 has any issues.

I-93 from Canton MA to St Johnsbury VT several times in each direction. That's the only 2di non-stop clinch(es) for me.
For 3di (most are not much of a challenge, esp. the first one on the list at about a mile and a half each way - could clinch it non-stop in both directions on foot through a foot of snow!): 189 (VT), 190 (MA), 195 (RI-MA), 290 (MA), 295 (RI-MA), 391 (MA), 393 (NH), 395 (CT-MA), 495 (MA), 691 (CT), 787 (NY).

Gonna jump in here for no particular reason. I normally don't clinch routes (simply don't have enough time off, nor do I really get-off on the idea of doing so) but there are a couple of freeways (not necessarily interstates) that I've driven, which meet the OP's criteria:

- Alberta Highway 2 (the freeway bit) from Edmonton to Calgary. Traffic was moving at 90 to 100 mph for the entire length, and I didn't want to get off and get stuck in a pack of cars going the normal 70(is) limit. I was meeting some extended family in downtown Calgary, so I didn't technically complete the entire route. Oh well. Until I got off on Memorial Drive in Calgary, the total length was around 283 kilometres (~175 miles).

- Discounting 3di's, I drove the entire length of I-82 from just outside Pendleton, OR to Ellensburg, WA in one go. I ate lunch at the BK in Pendleton; I think my next stop was in Cle Elum, WA. Total length was around 143 miles.

- I drove the entire length of the US-395 Freeway between Ritzville and Richland, around 73 miles. There's very little civilization out there to stop and see, nor is 73 miles much to complete without stopping.

I've completed I-4 non-stop. It was near midnight, so there wasn't much traffic nor incentive to stop...so, 132 miles.

I've also completed I-12 in one go, that only took a little over an hour, at just over 85 miles long.

I could add I-99 to the list, but I got off at one exit to collect a bonus county and returned back to the same exit.

After that, a bunch of 3dis...nothing too impressive.

I-68 multiple times
I-88 (NY) - possibly - although I used to like to stop at the diner in Unadilla, which is no longer there.
I-86 (CT/MA) - now part of 84, so not sure if it counts.

I-290 (MA)
I-395 (CT/MA)
the two above should be one continuous route, IMHO.
I-270 (MD)
I-684 (NY/CT)
I-275 (MI)
I-275 (OH/KY/IN) - right after the last segment opened in the late 70s
I-271 (OH)
I-471 (KY/OH) - many times
I-264 (KY) - by accident -- this was pre-GPS and I was given bad directions and never found my exit and went all the way to the end.  The person giving me directions had left out the critical step of taking I-64 - the exit they named was off 64 not 264.
I-865 (IN) - probably the shortest
I-395 (VA/DC)

Not an Interstate but CA 99 from Sacramento south to Wheeler Ridge is all freeway and every bit the 300 miles that I-5 is.  I've done that one in a single sitting....again not an Interstate, but that damn thing has so much traffic moving fast sometimes you might average 80 MPH the entire way.

That's where the skill factor comes in.  Figure on that 1,400 miles on I-5 you might optimistically be able to drive that in 23.33 hours of you maintained a speed of 60 MPH.  To be conservative for comfort reasons figure "potty break" would be between 2-3 hours.  That being the case someone would need to carry at least 12 twenty ounce bottles to make the journey in full.

Now all those assumptions are based of not having a need for a bowel movement.  Also the bottle method would generally only work for male drivers. But the again race car drivers manage to do stuff like this...I'll leave it to your imagination as to how.  I guess it would all come down to how much you really wanted that non-stop clinch with the properly prepared vehicle.

What is the longest interstate that you clinched COMPLETELY in one non-stop trip?

"Non-Stop" is defined as completing the entire trip:

- Remaining on the main carriageway
- No Exiting/Entering the interstate mid-stream
- No rest break, food stop, potty break, refuel,...

Thus, the rules do not permit a stop of any length, not to mention since you pulled back on downsteam of where you pulled off, for purposes of this thread you didn't clinch that approximate 1/4 mile of highway.

I pretty much do I-205, I-505, I-980, and [duck] I-238 nonstop every time that I drive on them. The same usually happens with I-210 and I-605. Back when it was I-15E (and maybe a few times since), I did I-215 nonstop almost by accident. I believe that I have done I-805 nonstop.
I usually miss just the southern(eastern)most  parts of I-280 and I-880 (missing southern 6 km because I live on it), but often drive them to their north ends, but I have definitely cliched both of them nonstop.

I've done I-4 (both directions)...

Reading this thread, I can't believe how "impressive" it is to do a non-stop 3 or 400 mile trip. I frequently go 300+ miles without stopping, and I don't need to hold it in badly or anything. A few small snacks, a few bottles of water, and going to the bathroom before I leave and I can go 5 hours without a problem. I also have a hatred of public restrooms and using them is a last resort. It also drives me nuts when I do a road trip with others and someone's gotta go to the bathroom every hour. If there's no other reason to stop, I feel people should be able to last a minimum of every 2 hours easily.

You may have unknowingly trained yourself to last that long. Up to a point, "having to piss" is entirely mental. At some point, it becomes physically dangerous, but that initial urge to piss can be subdued with the right mental training.

I always liked to stop every 2-2.5 hours on an Interstate.  Bathroom breaks aside my left feet starts to fall asleep if I'm on anything where I have cruise control on for too long.

Meant foot, resting on the dead pedal is what does it....although there might be some irony to that typo considering recent injuries.  Kind of makes me want to get a stick whenever I buy a new daily driver again one of these days, sure won't solve the rental car issue though.

I-155 (IL) & I-474 (IL) (On the same trip!)
I-865 (IN)
I-270 (MD -- assuming the fork for Eastbound Capital Beltway is the Mainline)

355, 155, and 270 each check it at 32 miles, 290 at 29 miles. So 32 miles of clinched non-stop, on a couple different routes

I've gotten close on I-294 (IL), I-88 (IL), I-190 (IL) and I-170 (MO) -- but I can't think of a time I've ever needed to drive end to end in one sitting...

I-17 is a couple of miles longer, but I drove it more than 20 years ago and can't remember if we stopped along the way or not.

I-99 (even the "future" parts)
I-176
I-195 (NJ)
I-276
I-395 (MD)
I-495 (DE, MD, VA)
I-526
I-676
I-895 (MD)

Nah I didn't do them all in one day and I've never clinched all of NY's I-495 in one sitting.

I've done I-96 from Detroit to Muskegon before.
I've also done I-4 from Tampa to Daytona Beach.
Both times I never got off the highway.
