Was in Toledo, Ohio this past weekend and traveled on I-75 and I-475 near Perrysburg when I noticed the I-75 Shield/Logo painted (in color) on the concrete pavement in certain lanes as a further directional guide for travelers. I had never seen this before and wonder if it is commonplace anywhere else in the country?
I was in an area where some construction/reconstruction was nearly finished, so perhaps the lane markings were only temporary during construction?
Anybody?
I can think of a few roads in Northern Virginia and DC that have them, though I wouldn't say it's common here.
–Northbound Van Dorn Street (Virginia secondary route 613) just south of I-495
–Inbound I-395/US-1 on the 14th Street Bridge (inbound-only span)
–Arlington Memorial Bridge outbound lanes (outline shields, not in color unlike the others noted above)
I-184 used to at I-84: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.6031142,-116.2808647,3a,75y,224.65h,77.86t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sU5f-8uYSRFI9aUsL0Pr1PA!2e0!5s20110901T000000!7i13312!8i6656
Gone now though (or just faded to zero visibility, not sure which). EDIT: The adjacent ramp from Franklin Rd./Milwaukee St. might still have them. Still show up on GSV as of 2015 (though somewhat faded), can't remember if they were still visible more recently.
NYS Thruway in Albany right past toll booths.

I didn't realize they are THAT elongated...
In the last year or so, I have seen them pop up more frequently here in Tampa.
Ubiquitous in Texas. I think we actually pioneered this usage - I remember seeing them on the 20-820 East split back in 2000 or so.
I 355 South exit land on I-88 east in Lisle IL.
We've had it for awhile on Ohio 28 Westbound approaching I-275. One lane is marked for Northbound I-275 and the other is marked for Southbound I-275.
I've also seen it in North Carolina. In the following aerial view I-40, there are Interstate shields on the pavement for I-40 and I-73:

I-75 in Atlanta: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.8044018,-84.4115359,62m/data=!3m1!1e3
SB I-75 / US-23 in Flint, at the split.
And I saw it somewhere else in SE Mich, but I forget where.
WVDOH has I-70 shields along the pavement in both directions of I-70 approaching Wheeling tunnel, where through traffic needs to be in the left lane.
Last year, I-79 shields were added along US 19/WV 7 and CR 19/24 heading out of Morgantown to show which lanes to use to get onto the Interstate.
Popping up all over Birmingham on I-20/59 and I-65.

It wouldn't surprise me. Ubiquitous, indeed - can be found in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Ft. Worth, El Paso....
They used to have them here:

but they got scraped off. The area is on a hill which made it hard to see them.
I 80 and I 580 in Reno, Nevada
Maybe they should be used on M-22, so they can't be stolen.
Starting to spread around Florida
Before they repaved the Bulkeley Bridge on I-84, there was.

I've seen them on I-35/I-80 as I-80 splits westbound in the Des Moines area and I-70 westbound approaching Topeka, KS, where the Kansas Turnpike turns into I-470.
Popping up in Massachusetts in places, which I've seen on MA 2 for I-190 and on I-90 for I-84.

Huh. The ones at MA 2/I-190 must be quite new. Over the years, I've wondered about all the safety signage at that intersection from MA 2's perspective. The intersection never seemed to be that complicated to me (and besides, it's Leominster, not exactly a thriving metropolis).
A couple of pavement painted shields in Chester, PA:

Also I-290 east at I-495 north/Route 85 connector. Massachusetts uses preformed symbols instead of paint for these markings.
On I-83 in Pennsylvania, approaching the York Split near Harrisburg there are PA-581 and I-83 shields painted on their respective lanes on approach to the interchange. And approaching the Eisenhower Interchange there are I-83 and I-283 shields painted on.

Not an interstate shield, but instead a BC provincial route marker painted at a roundabout interchange, north of Victoria:

I saw one instance here in San Diego. I-8 or I-5. Can't remember now. I thought it rather unsightly, but maybe it just takes getting used to.

The ones on 2 are about a year old. I moved away from that area autumn 2014 and they were not there yet. They are on the westbound side only. I think the problem westbound is the merge from the prior exit that now has so much traffic due to the stores all built at it. Lots of weaving in that short stretch.
- I-471 at its northern end in Cincinnati for I-71, I-75 & U.S 50
- I-40 in North Carolina near Raleigh (don't remember if it was for I-540 or U.S. 1)
Definitely a cool effect and a great navigational aid. I wish more areas had this.

Also I-44 in Wichita Falls. Oklahoma City on I-40 and 35.
I think Tulsa uses this too, to keep you from taking the Creek Turnpike instead of I-44 to OKC as the Will Rogers ends west-bound.
So judging from everybody's answers, this practice appears to be:
1. Fairly new within the past 5-7 years...?
2. Gaining momentum to become more commonplace.
Thanks for all the responses, and information, photos, and links.
And speaking of Tulsa and the western end of the Will Rogers Turnpike: when my wife and I came through there last month, I noticed a new "time to" sign near said end that gave the times to OKC via either by-passing Tulsa using the Creek Turnpike or driving straight through Tulsa.
I was going to say that SR-8 Southbound approaching the Central Interchange in Akron, OH (I-76 & I-77 Junction) has them, but looking at the most recent photo...

They're quite common in the Birmingham area, although I haven't gotten any pictures.
The rebuilt Kennedy Bridge over the Ohio River has painted shields for the right three lanes which exit to Interstates 64 and 71.

I-91 northbound at I-291/US 20 as well. Both these installations are relatively new, and were done as part of the ongoing viaduct reconstruction.
In Phoenix, there's a few examples where simple highway numbers are painted on the pavement rather than shields. They've been there for several years.

It's worth noting that elongated route shields for pavement markings were introduced as an option in the 2009 MUTCD, which depicts Interstate, US Route and circle pavement shields. The Interstate shield version actually appeared in 2004 MUTCD Standard Highway Signs book, even though it they weren't in the 2003 MUTCD the book supplemented.
Have noted them all across the country. On my trip to Kansas/Missouri this week, I saw painted regulatory signs as well.
Will generally photograph painted shields as part of my documentation of roads. Here's a few from around the main site:

They're all over the place at least down South, from Atlanta to Birmingham to Chattanooga to more. I honestly think it is just incredibly cool when the interstate shields (or anything else) is painted on the pavement, usually preceding an interchange. I highly like and advocate the practice of it, and in addition to adequate signage and maps, it helps motorists easily visualize the upcoming interchange and knowing which lanes they need to be in. I absolutely love this stuff.
EDIT: Here is one example in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Interstate 75 Northbound before the I-75/I-24 interchange: https://www.google.com/maps/place/I-75,+East+Ridge,+TN+37412/@34.9985342,-85.2092393,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x886066ed5309285b:0x19f11fcad9a86770
