Title: CA Style US Hwy Shields in Other States
Post by: stevenliu96 on November 26, 2016, 11:04:34 PM
US Highway shields in California are different than the ones used by all the other states. Anybody seen CA style US hwy shields in other states?

I've found one: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0272161,-114.5739203,3a,21.7y,212.44h,85.42t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sRedF1O6X07Dt-N8vPY6Ygg!2e0!5s20110801T000000!7i13312!8i6656

Alas, that reportedly was recently replaced with a conventional non-cutout US 93 route marker (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18561.msg2186992#msg2186992).

I wonder if there might be examples much closer to the California border, perhaps erected by contractors looking to use up California-style sign blanks they happened to have on hand.

North Carolina dabbled in this style of shield.  I was aware of 3 shields that made it to the late 1980s (all gone now).

Here is the only pic of one I could find quickly...

From 1960s family trips to the Outer Banks, I have faint memories of a number of those in the Greensboro area.

Here's one in Madison, WI, near the UW campus. Not sure if it's like this on purpose, or if it's just old. The button copy is also unique to the state, AFAIK.

Where?

I've lived in Reno for about 15 years, and haven't seen one here or in Carson City.

I know I saw at least one, but I honestly can't remember where. Somewhere along I 580. Maybe the interchange with US 395 ALT? It's been a couple years.

They were used on Minnesota Interstates to mark concurrent U.S. routes in the 1970s. Colorado had a few scattered about. None have been erected outside California in 35 years, I reckon.

Utah had (has) close oh, so, close with the giant, wooden US 89 shields on I-70 from sometime in the 1990s through about 2007:

They've been replaced with standard square US 89 shields (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.9306013,-111.8669341,3a,15y,261.85h,88.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssbKNZHK3jemSnVsajoOEYw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) except for this one:

The last cutout US 89 shield is made of aluminum, the first east/northbound reassurance marker just after the UT-259 (to UT-24) exit. If only they added the "US" above the number (they're still good, though).

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken... I just drove I-580 between Reno and Carson on Sunday, and there's no CA-style cutout shields along the way. There are some 395 shields on the BGSs that have black outlines, which is more typical of Caltrans style.
