So, I just had lunch with my father in West Memphis, AR, and just as we get onto the highway to head back across the river, I look up to see a truck headed east on I-40.
This by itself isn't very remarkable....but its cargo is what caught my eye: pieces of several BGSs were racked and secured vertically on the trailer.
It's a little odd being on a highway in Arkansas when a sign for NY117/Sleepy Hollow goes whizzing by.
I guess that the Taconic Parkway is getting some new signs? (Or is there another road that would get such a BGS?)
The Taconic is getting new signs, and new mileage based exit numbers to boot.

I recall that Florida had a lot of BGSes created in Arkansas, which came to light after an error (http://www.wesh.com/article/florida-misspelled-on-interstate-sign-in-jacksonville/4425940). I'm curious if there's one firm there that makes a bunch of them, and they're just transported where they're needed. From what I hear, there's other sign shops elsewhere, but this firm one of the bigger ones?

Sounds like the Taconic contractor subbed the BGS fabrication to Interstate Signways of Little Rock, AR. They are one of the principal sign fabricators in the country.

so this would mean the Taconic is the first in NY to have a mileage based exit numbering scheme right? Does any other expressway have it yet?
Interstates 95(partial) and Interstate 99, I believe.

The Taconic signs in Westchester County are already up. I would guess this is for NY 9A. One of the NY sign companies contracts work to Arkansas... it's become controversial with the Cuomo Signs, as a senator thought it was silly for signs promoting tourism in NY to be made out of state.
Wow, I will say that must have been one cool sight. I have never had the pleasure of seeing any fresh, new BGSes or any road signs at all being transported ever - I have only seen a local business sign on its way to its destination, which was a large Nissan sign being transported on a truck to the new Mtn. View Nissan off of GA SR 52 in Dalton, when I was sitting in a parking lot eating a Hardee's biscuit.

For larger projects, most sign contractors outsource their BGS fabrication to other companies. The principal firms that do large scale BGS fabrication as suppliers are Interstate Signways - which is based in Arkansas, Rocal - which is based in Ohio, and Lyle Signs - which is based in South Dakota. The only sign contractor I'm immediately aware of that routinely does large scale BGS production in-house for their projects is the Avon MA facility of RoadSafe Traffic Systems - which was originally L&C Flashing Barricades, which then became part of NES Traffic Safety before being sold to RoadSafe.

I think I have a picture somewhere in the forums of a few new signs on a NJDOT truck right next to me. I'll occasionally see that sign truck...and I'll try to think and figure out exactly where they're getting hauled to!
