Regarding state-name I-shields in Minnesota: they're getting harder to find in part because MnDOT dropped the practice in 1996.
did you notice something in the state-name "I-35W MN" shield? Is it a old-school telephone wires along the roads or a old telegraph pole along an adjacent railroad?

why did they decide against them?
at least they kept the number the same size (10" on a 24" shield, as opposed to the garish 12")

I was not paying attention, actually. I do not remember if there is a railroad running adjacent - what you see is what I know!

As you may recall, the Feds dropped the state name from the Federal MUTCD by the late 80s. It looks like MnDOT simply updated their standard signs to follow suit.

Chances are, it was old school wires (which are all over the place in MN) and not a parallel railroad.
