Title: Building Implosions.
Post by: BigMattFromTexas on November 25, 2009, 10:29:21 PM
Does anyone else like seeing building demolitions? Well at Angelo State University(ASU) Dykon Explosive Demolition demolished the 10 story womens dorm on campus. I think the dormitory had asbestos and ASU didn't feel like removing it and renovating the outdated building, so if they down want to fix it up, why not tear it down. And thats exactly what they did. So they called in Dykon to implode the tower... Unfortunately I was in Del Rio, Tx on the day they did it, but there are plenty of videos on YouTube. They still have to remove everything(walls, plumbimg, electricity, ect) from the identical Mens Dorm.
Heres the video made by the actual Dykon Explosive Demolition YouTube page.

I have KOCO's coverage of the demolition of the remains of the Murrah Building in Downtown OKC on tape. This is KFOR's coverage of the implosion, which is a bit different (KOCO's is from another angle, and has commentary): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn9qY5a7rmY

I've witnessed the implosion of both Three Rivers Stadium (http://www.pahighways.com/features/threeriversstadium.html) and Veterans Stadium (http://www.pahighways.com/features/veteransstadium.html) in person.

I love the one where they blow the building up, and it doesn't fall completely. Everyone busts out laughing

It's amazing how it takes so long to build something, but in about a minute, it can be demolished into rubble. Everyone seems to love seeing a building go bye-bye and implode to the ground. :D

This (http://www.dykon-explosivedemolition.com/index.html) is the company that demolished University Hall. Oh and I found out that they won't be demolishing Concho Hall(the mens dorm) any time soon...

And even more interesting is that it does not take a lot of explosive material to do it - the charges just have to be placed in the right spots and detonated in the right sequence.  Weaken the structure, then kick the supports out from under it and let gravity do the rest.  It is an art.

Well, it usually takes a significant amount of time to set the explosives to use the minimum amount that should cause the building to implode properly.  But, that's still usually on the order of days or weeks, versus the months to build a building.

If a building needs other prep work, like removing asbestos or other hazardous materials that can take awhile.

Well, this is how not to demolish a building...

Oops!

Seriously, it's amazing how the remaining top portion didn't just fall over.

Building implosions seem to be a really interesting thing to see and experience. When the Wachovia Spectrum gets imploded in Philadelphia, I will be sure to see it.
