Title: CA 153; the shortest signed state highway
Post by: Max Rockatansky on June 25, 2017, 08:23:32 AM
Actually went looking for CA 153 signage near Coloma and found what I've looking for:

That said, 153 is signed incredibly poorly and you wouldn't know it even exists from CA 49 as there is nothing directing you towards it.  On Monument Road there is a lone CA 153 shield approaching the Marshall Monument with a neat little placard indicating it is the shortest route...which I believe isn't technically true because if memory serves there is an unsigned bridge Caltrans maintains in the Lost Coast?  Anyways, I figured that I would link the photos before getting into the CA 153 historical backstory.

I think, now that Caltrans has taken back maintenance of the Tower Bridge, that CA-275 is now the shortest state highway? It's only the length of the bridge, which has to be well under a quarter-mile.

Yeah I think that's the one I have in mind, I don't think it's signed though?

Yeah it's not signed. Kinda pointless to do so.

One could say the same thing about 153 also.  I thought it was really weird not to have any shields at all from 49 but only sudden have one after a turn along with a specialized placard.  I'm surprised both haven't been stolen by now, I would owe that to the remoteness of the area along with questionable signage for the Marshall Monument.

Info on SR 153: https://www.aaroads.com/california/ca-153.html (not much more detail than what you posted here)

Info on SR 283: https://www.aaroads.com/california/ca-283.html (yes, back in 2007 Alex and I posited the question about whether 153 or 283 is actually the shortest route ... and this was I think before the Tower Bridge entered the fray as part of SR 275)

283 is the one I had in mind on the Eel River.  Yeah, I'll be adding to the LRN history and providing map links tomorrow.  I really bit off a lot this weekend out in the Sierras, usually I'm not this far behind on this kind of stuff.  Luckily some of it is fairly short and the Echo Summit/US 50 in addition to CA 172 threads have been filled pretty much by now.
