If today's popular music didn't turn everything way down except for the vocals and drums there would probably be instrumental melodies and riff that captured people's imagination again. I suppose there are keyboard and other electronic melodies out there in the forefront in some genres but they're not going to make people pick up a guitar.
Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved hard rock and heavy metal. I've never played the guitar (used to be a drummer), but I still love a good screaming solo. As long as there's heavy metal (particularly if more new bands would play old-school-style metal, like Volbeat), there will be a demand for guitars.
Country music artists will always need guitars, too.
