Title: Some notes from a recent trip to Hawaii
Post by: MarkF on October 25, 2017, 01:45:18 AM
Last month I took a trip to Maui and Oahu.

In Maui, there was new work on the south end of the Lahaina bypass:

The speed limit on the built part of the bypass goes way down to 30mph on the north half, seems really slow for how well built it is.  I found that the 2013 AAA map I had shows the full bypass routing:

The new Airport Access road to the Kahului (OGG) airport is open, and signed as HI 3800. HI 380 exits itself at Dairy Rd and the HI 380 mainline routes into HI 3800.  Cuts off a few blocks of traffic lights.  Here it is at HI 36:

On Oahu, the north end of HI 93 in the northwest turns into a dirt pathway:

An I-H201 sign, I don't think there are any of these shields not on a BGS.

Regular gas on Maui was typically around $3.55, except for $2.89 at Costco.  In Oahu it was going for around $2.79.

Here's some videos from the trip:

I-H2 (easy to clinch at 9 miles):

I-H1 starting from a right turn onramp in the Waikiki area, onto I-H201, then cross-island on IH-3:

I was on Maui 5 years ago and the traffic was ridiculous through Lahaina, especially when there was an emergency.  So, I'm glad to see that the bypass is continuing to be built.  There is no question that it needs to be completed; but, it's sad to see that it will be several, several more years before construction is started & completed on the north end towards Honokowai.  Once it's fully completed, it will be a real joy to pass around the resorts and town areas!

Another area that desperately needs upgraded, widened, or a series of tunnels is on the Honoapiilani (route 30) from south of the new bypass back towards the 4 lane at Maalaea.  When there is an accident on that section of highway, it takes hours for traffic to clear.   And, nearly impossible for emergency vehicles to make their way through from the west part of the island to Kahului.  There's been a lot of talk about doing something; yet, the costs and environmental concerns are way too high.
