Post by: kphoger on October 31, 2017, 01:08:55 PM
Obviously, this is a nod to the 2064 thread.
If this forum had been around in 1964, what thread topics would there have been?  I'll start.

Funny enough, I drove down that exact street maybe a week ago or so...in retrospect, a strange choice for variable speed limit posting!  Skyline out there is a bit of a scenic route and not really a major commute access point, especially with 280 being completed 1968-1970 towards Daly City and the short Route 1 portion of the Junipero Serra Freeway at the SF border.

Current speed limit there is 50 MPH:

We had 7-digit dialing in the Bay Area for years, even after the 415/650 split!!!  I think only about two or three years ago did that finally go away for people in the SF and San Mateo County regions.

Oh, I meant before area codes/exchanges...wasn't it only 4 or 5 digits when dialing about 50-60 years ago? I first dealt with 10-digit dialing in 1995.

(and now I'm anachronistically failing the thread)

The original intent–at least on US-99E in 1964–was to warn or fog or other hazardous weather conditions, not traffic jams.

You may have missed the point.  I was using four-digit dialing as late as 1991.  The town I grew up in didn't begin using seven digits until the early 1990s.

That makes sense now that I think of it.  (Does get foggy out on that part of Route 35).  Having said that...still a relatively lightly traveled road compared to 99E/today's Business 80

Good year for CT roads: over 30 miles of new freeway; renumbering from 1961 reclassification winding down. The '60s have been great for highway construction and I don't see any sign of slowing down.

I-95 is now completed in CT! I was worried we'd be the last state to finish our portion :-) Just kidding, but I expect within 10 years you'll be able to drive I-95 without stopping from Maine to Miami.

CT 52: it's great to have a route number for that stretch of Turnpike, and it's eventually going to connect to I-90 in MA! Too bad CT 12 won't get signed on it... no 12 freeway as originally planned. But, spitballing here, how about an Interstate number once it's done? 490 is available.

How about a late 1965 Hartford meet? By then, there will be new sections of I-84, I-91, and the "Mixmaster" in E. Hartford open to traffic. (But there's so much going on here, we could have a meet every year! The state is so pro-highway, it's a great place for a roadgeek to live!)

Does anyone have one of the new PDP-8 machines from DEC? They're "only" $18,000 but that's way less than a 360. Wondering how well aaroads runs on it. Not being able to post would be a dealbreaker.

Anyway, I'm sure I'd have ranted at US 6 being truncated to Bishop, it should have remained as far as Santa Clarita (I-5 junction). As well as the US 99 elimination.

Boy, that Robert Moses has some great plans in the works for transportation in the NYC area.  That Mid-Manhattan Expressway will make it so much easier for traffic to get across town without all those traffic lights, and it will be great to see I-495 connect to its parent.  And I can't wait till I-78 is finally finished from the Holland Tunnel to Throgs Neck.  Make it a lot easier for people from Jersey, Lower Manhattan, and Brooklyn to get to Idlewild (oh, I forgot they call it JFK now).

I can't wait until later this year when you can finally drive to Staten Island without having to drive to Jersey to get there.

Anyone notice how they left room to the west of I-5, and room to the east of I-95?  I wonder if US 101 will become I-1, and the Garden State Parkway will become I-99.  It'll be really groovy if they build a bridge and tunnel over the Delaware Bay to connect with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel.

Explaining the new Michigan Left turn  to someone outside of Michigan.
I-75, keep it via US-10/US-27 or build it along M-76?
Should I-96 be routed via Grand River or via the Lodge Freeway?
Should ON-401 be extended to the Ambassador Bridge and connect to I-75 (The Fisher)?

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Set to Open This April (http://www.cbbt.com/about-us/history/)

That bridge from Cape May to near Rehoboth would be a great connector between the two. No more having to endure that awful Route 13 traffic in Delaware.  Hey, there's your I-97; down the Delmarva from Wilmington through Dover to the new bridge and tunnel near Norfolk.   At least Jersey travel will be a little lighter on the wallet in a few years when they build the free I-95 south of Exit 10 on the Turnpike to connect to that new freeway that just opened a couple of years ago on the outskirts of Trenton. Heard it will eventually connect right into Center City Philadelphia.  But you're right, making the Garden State I-99 and building that bridge would bring new people to the Jersey Shore resorts.  Who knows; maybe one of them will become a boom town like Las Vegas.

Another couple of connections I heard Robert Moses talking about were bridges to and from Long Island.  One that leads from Brooklyn to Sandy Hook, NJ and another one across Long Island Sound to either CT or RI.

I'm not sure if this is due to how I said it, but the dates are fine.  Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel opened in 1964, so it's reasonable to think the next crossing further north could get the same bridge/tunnel crossing in 1964!

My bad, I inadvertently misread the first part of your sentence (mistook your Delaware Bay reference for Chesapeake Bay).

To that you can add "Oregon State to go to the Rose Bowl!".  January 1st, 1965 was the last time the Beavers played in that bowl game.  They lost to Michigan 34-7.  Funny thing: OSU scored first!  Tommy Prothro was the coach and since he did so well in Corvallis, someone at UCLA figured he would do great in LA.  Prothro moved on.

OSU has the distinction of winning just one Rose Bowl and the game was not even played in Pasadena!  Due to the attack on Pearl Harbor, OSU's game with Duke was moved to Durham NC.  The Blue Devils went down by a count of 20-16.

Waiting over half a century for a return to the Rose Bowl is getting into Chicago Cubs territory...LOL!

If they ever build I-35 north of US 20, they need to build it closer to Mason City instead of Garner.

Will Cedar Rapids ever get an Interstate? What about Waterloo and Dubuque?

I-80 is now open from Des Moines to Davenport, but I can't wait for the new bridge to open at Le Claire so you don't have to drive through Davenport, Bettendorf, and Moline (is that area called the Tri-Cities, Quad Cities, or Quint Cities?) on the way to Chicago.

And I just picked up a map at Texaco and can't believe Iowa 60 doesn't turn into Minnesota 60. You have Iowa 60 becoming Missouri 5 and Minn. 60 becoming Iowa 33.

In many areas (and most metros) today, when area codes run out of numbers instead of splitting them up they overlay a new area code onto it. In my case, I could do 7-digit dialing in the 801 area code until around 2008, but then 385 was added to the 801 area, so now 10-digits are required.

Rick
And the Minnesota Golden Gophers have waited even longer.

The latest hotels, restaurants and campgrounds open to "coloreds", based on the widely recommended Motorist Green Book (remember, this is 1964 - right before the US civil rights act's passage into law):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Negro_Motorist_Green_Book

The biggest topic: Should we have a John F Kennedy named everything?

Example: the John F Kennedy Space Center in Cape Kennedy (or Cape Canaveral) Florida.

In Indio, CA, there's a John F Kennedy Elementary school (I didn't attend that one, I went to Dwight Eisenhower and infamous: Andrew Jackson schools - I'm part-Cherokee )...and John F Kennedy Memorial Hospital - also there's an Eisenhower Medical center in Rancho Mirage.

HOT TOPIC: the new major league baseball ballpark near US 101 (I-5) in the citrus grove area of Anaheim in Orange County, CA - they're gonna build another freeway by the Santa Ana River. GO CALIFORNIA ANGELS! (was first, Los Angeles, then Anaheim and now L.A. Angels of Anaheim).

Perhaps, but the amount of silver was close to what the coins were worth.  What would a quarter's silver be worth today ... $5?

- Am I not the only one in here who has a really bad feeling about this entire 'Great Society' thing that LBJ is talking about?  (Great thread-closer for back in 1964! )

- BTW, any thoughts on this new guy in charge in the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev?

- Are there any other Catholics in here who are upset at the Vatican for dropping Latin from the Mass and moving the altar to that front-center position (among other things)?

- I have a baaaad feeling about the Packers this year, seven games into the season (end of October) and they're now 3-4 after that 27 - 17 loss to the Rams in Milwaukee.   :-(

- That intersection at U.S.H. 41 and S.T.H. 125 (College Ave) west of Appleton, Wisc. has been getting NASTY in the past few years with all of that new development in that commercial area.  When is the state going to be able to upgrade it (an interchange would be nice!)?

- Wisconsin is finally going to eliminate that two-lane drawbridge in the U.S.H. 41 Big Lake Butte des Morts causeway in Oshkosh, upgrading both that as well as the two lane part from Kaukauna to De Pere, Wisc. to four lanes.  Some weekends in summer the backups from that drawbridge when it opens to let boats pass can be well over five miles long.

Plenty on the old SP branches in the San Joaquin Valley (now owned by several independent regional RR's), particularly on secondary roads.  All state highways and major county arterials have been long converted to gates.  As they stop working (just like old RR semaphore signals, the parts availability is "machine it yourself"), they're simply replaced with crossbucks.

Imagine 1964 when it was a tough world for Gay men.

A male user receives a PM from a "friend" who lives in Los Angeles.

"hey, I know who you are, I am too" said the PM.

"How...and where do I find you...and what have to meet you there?" said the user.

"This: the first guide made for us - https://damron.com/product-category/damron-travel-guides (now in its 53rd year), the L.A. area's bars, clubs, hotels, restaurants and other places to meet, I know some places in West Hollywood, Long Beach, Laguna Beach, san Diego and Palm Springs, it's like the Green book by black motorists, but our time will come...perhaps the 21st century. Please pass this on to others you know".

In 1964, there were still places which refuse service to anyone they suspect are Jewish, as well Armenian (here in CA), Mexican or Latino, Chinese and Japanese, and Native American or Hawaiian. We may look back to the past as a "golden age", "happy days" or "innocence Lost", but there was more discrimination (also encountered by Women), prejudice (esp. Blacks), marginalization (the disabled), and intolerance (i.e. LGBT people) in American society back then.
