You know those places where the pavement just really needs to be repaved and there are potholes everywhere? Have you considered how old those highways actually are? What are some of the oldest sections of highway that you know about, either that haven't been repaved in a very long time, or are just very old, and original?
the old National Road bridge in Wheeling, West Virginia is from 1849 and remains open to light vehicles. there are some brick alignments of US-90 in northern Florida that may be even older.
The Holland tunnel dates back from 1927. Some NY parkways are even older than that, the Bronx River Parkway started construction in 1908, however, most Parkways are from 1930's.
They say Interstates are modeled after the German Autobahn, but I think the German Autobahn is modeled after the New York Parkways.
Georgia State Route 166 (Arthur Langford Parkway/"Lakewood Freeway"). It was constructed, I think, duirng the 1960s. It's four lanes overall. The freeway has very short entrance ramps and most of the bridges are as they were when it was built. The only additions are new BGS and a concrete median, from I-285 to just west of I-75/85.

The Pulaski Skyway (U.S. 1&9) in New Jersey dates back to (I believe) 1932.
WA-531 from Lake Goodwin to English Crossing in Lakewood
Dates back to before 1911.
The pavement on Wash. SR 531 is certainly much newer then 1911, IIRC correctly from driving it it didn't appear to be much more than 5-7 years old or so

It's been repaved since then, though, right?
The original James Lick Skyway in SF was built in 1936.
