Title: So, what kind of road-related stuff did you find under your tree?
Post by: hbelkins on December 27, 2009, 08:51:05 PM
What kinds of goodies did everyone get as gifts? GPS units, atlases, digital cameras or camcorders, other roadtrip supplies?

Since I just moved into my own place in June, I'm still lacking critical pieces of furniture, so my presents mainly focused on those. Nothing road-related this year. I told my mom I'd like the 2009 MUTCD for my birthday though.

I got nothing. All my road related paraphernalia I usually have to obtain myself.   :-(

I've been looking for a suction mount for my camera. Where did you get that one from, if you bought it for yourself?

----

Also, I got another 8GB Sandisk SD card and an 8GB Sandisk flash drive.

Be well,

Bryant

Under my tree was something differently road related: a book.  Asphalt Memories: Origins of some of the street names of Clark County.  This should be an interesting read that delves into some street name origins around the Las Vegas area.

It was researched by a county employee (museum employee, I think), with much of the proceeds going to the county museum.  My mom had to drive out to the Clark County Museum on the other side of town to get it, cause she couldn't find it in local bookstores--for that, I'm thankful to her.

I got another copy of the 2010 Rand McNally as well, but I had to tell my mother that it really wasn't feasible as a Christmas gift since the next edition (2011) will be released within a couple months. (When I was growing up, it made much more sense as the editions were released in the September/October timeframe.)

So, my mother is into scrapbooking. She knows these two guys from Idaho who buy up old papery things and resell them to people... usually with the idea that they'll then be cut up and made into collages. This, quite obscenely, includes old maps. For Christmas, my mother rescued a few from the chopping block by buying them and giving them to me instead.

TWA Routes, 1967 (http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/5894/dscn6248c.jpg)

Rocky Mountain National Park, 1976 (http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/5590/dscn6250.jpg)
Cheyenne, WY street map, Undated (features I-80 and I-25 - with sequential exit numbers) (http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/3236/dscn6251q.jpg)
Shenandoah National Park brochure, 1959 (http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/9787/dscn6252.jpg)
New England road map, 1976 (there were two of these, identical) (http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4413/dscn6253.jpg)
Santa Fe Motel brochure, Undated (features US 66 and 99, no interstates)

I got a Michelin Road Atlas of Europe. Michelin has the best mapping in Europe in my opinion. Clear and detailed maps.

Cool!  I can just imagine unwrapping a street sign on Christmas morning now!  I'd probably hear "You don't need that!"

I received a collage of Florida colored shields photographed from different trips, a 1968 Rand McNally Road Atlas and one of my all-time favorite gifts, a 1926 Rand McNally Road Atlas, showing the humble beginnings of the U.S. Highway System.

Hmmm, somebody doesn't have faith that your car will make it to your destination and back! :colorful:

I didn't get anything road related under the tree, but I did buy Ridge Route: The Road that United California by Harrison Irving Scott.

I found two old porcelain enamel California traffic signs under my tree. One was an ACSC, 20's, BOULEVARD STOP and the other one was an LAPD, 30's, STOP. Now to find just the right spot for these guys in the sign room.

very nice!

glad you got the img tag issue resolved  :sombrero:

where's LAPD gonna go?  on the former CDOH wall that now has an assortment of everything?

oh, remind me to take a photo of the SJPD stop sign I restored ... the one Jeff S had that was a total beater (even more so after I used it to dig my car out of the ice on old US-10); Dale wanted it and I redid it for him and now it's quite nice!
