Title: Old Brick Hwy Near Tonkawa OK
Post by: Brian556 on December 22, 2017, 09:29:05 PM
This is cool. Never found an old brick highway in rural OK before. This reminds me of CR 13 in Flagler Co FL, since its brick covered by gravel.

The 1936 Map http://dc.library.okstate.edu/digital/collection/OKMaps/id/6551/rec/9 (http://dc.library.okstate.edu/digital/collection/OKMaps/id/6551/rec/9)shows that US 77 was 177, and that it did not use this road at that time. I cannot tell how far the brick goes south, or where that road turned.

I shared this with my friend near Tulsa who loves all quirky Oklahoma things. Thanks for sharing!

Isn't the Sidewalk Highway portion of Old 66 still in driving condition?

It has been represented as being so, though I haven't gone out to Narcissa to check in person yet.

The section near Miami, OK IS still drivable, but is not in good condition.  There are a couple other sections which I am currently blanking on.

We really need NE2 to the rescue on this one.  Or agentsteel53, but we know that won't happen.

Could it be remnants of an old autotrail ?

It was probably just part of an Oklahoma Y. There are Oklahoma Ys all over the state, and many of them are on county roads that were never state highways.

I found this just north of the road. It is a bridge pier from an old railroad bridge over the Salt Fork.

The 1924 state highway map shows the jog in the highway to be located several miles south of the current one. The brick section would likely be part of the original highway (State Highway 26) alignment.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171229/6593ed9bced96dacf5288d2922ea28eb.jpg)
