Walmart is closing 63 (so far) Sam's Club stores.

Someone should write a letter to their Bentonville Home Offices...
Here is a draft of mine:
*Note: This is subject to revision!
Dear Walmart,
WTF? Y u b closin' Sammy's?
On the list are Manchester and Vernon, CT. The closing which surprises me is one in the south end of Worcester, MA. It's in a fairly new plaza right next to MA Route 146. I don't think it was even there for 5 years! :(

And that’s how they’re paying for it, because you know it ain’t coming out of the executives’ pockets.
On topic, one in the Richmond area is affected by this.
I don't buy their excuse they put out on Twitter stating that they are refocusing their locations. Whatever you say, man. And how crappy to find out the place you work at is closing as you head in to work. How about a little advance notice, eh?

Yeah, the whole thing reeks of bullshit, IMO. I feel bad for those employees having to find out they're out of a job the hard way. Total dick move.

Why yes, this letter will make them change their mind about store closings, without questioning your age and disposable income levels.
Whatever it worth - in Upstate NY they closed stores in Rochester and Syracuse, where Costco is an alternative - but keep stores in Albany and Buffalo, where there is no Costco.
Sam's is pulling out of Rochester and Syracuse completely, while staying in Watertown and Binghamton. Costco is in both Rochester and Syracuse, while Syracuse also has BJ's
This has a map of the closing locations: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/12/heres-a-map-of-where-walmart-is-closing-more-than-60-sams-club-stores.html

FTFY. Seems like those 3 were chosen because there are BJ's or Costco nearby all of them. Manchester has a BJ's, there's a Costco right down Route 1 just into Milford, and there's a BJ's in Auburn. There isn't a BJ's or a Costco on the Berlin Turnpike, so that one stays open.
Some of them are going to be converted into online fulfillment centers, from what I read. Sounds like Walmart is responding to competition from online retailers like Amazon.

Appears BJ's has put out a call to former Sam's Club Associates saying they are hiring. :)

Right...but not too far away is a Costco on Hartford Road (CT Route 71) in New Britain. It's next door to a Target, Stanley Golf Course and Exit 30 of CT Route 9. WestFarms Mall and Corbins Corner are less than a mile to the north.
USA Today has published a complete list (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2018/01/11/see-if-your-sams-club-closing-heres-list/1026816001/)

The only three in Washington, which are all an hour from Costco's headquarters (and about a thousand actual Costco's), will be closing. Costco is stiff competition all across the country. Even stiffer here in Washington, where's it's a "local chain". The fact that any other club stores existed here at all, I found pretty remarkable.
Walmart used to crush competition and now they are just backing out?

IMO, the company changed a lot after Sam Walton died. They started building too fast (like the Express stores they closed a while back). Plus some competitors figured out how to work around Walmart. For example: Walmart got rid of butchers, so stores with butchers have a niche.
I think they got cocky and complacent.
I've been in some Sam's Clubs in different regions that I wondered how they stayed open when I compared them to mine, which apparently is one of the busier ones in the Midwest. I'm guessing that they had been planning this, and they announced the raises to take the sting out of the latter closing announcement. You also have to wonder if they ran some numbers and found that if they paid everyone more at those closing Sam's Clubs if that could take a barely "making it" store and put it into the red. You also have to think that Costco is hurting Sam's. They are refurbishing our local store, and due to the changes that are being made, I can't wait for the Costco to open here in late 2018.
Funny they are closing as in Orlando they opened up a brand new one recently with a Walmart next door to it over in Lake Nona.
At one point, Madison, WI was supposed to have two Sam's Clubs, now we're losing the only one we have within 40 miles of the Madison metro area. Conversely, we have two Costcos less than 20 miles apart (less as the crow flies).

In Orlando they do not like to have too many Costco stores close to each other. When OBT opened, they closed Sandlake Road over 4 miles away. Then when they opened Millenia off I-4 by Universal, they then closed OBT and made a corporate type of wholesale store in its place.
Two closings in MI (south Lansing and Farmington Hills).
The store on the south side of Lansing is in a declining area (Sam's still has a store in the Lansing area in the Eastwood Town Center about three miles north of MSU)
In Sacramento, a Sam's Club and a Wal-Mart, both located in the same shopping center, are closing.

Neither one is adjacent to a Walmart either which seems like most Sam's are.
I take it then Oregon will still be one of 2 sates to not have a Sam's club for all of eternity.

It appears that most of the closing locations are near existing Costco stores. Not surprising at all.

I'm pretty sure Berlin Mall in Berlin just outside of Montpelier has one. I don't see any Walmart's in the Burlington area though at all.

There's a Walmart near Burlington. Every large settlement has one nearby, whether it be in VT or just across the Connecticut River. There is NO Sam's Club in the state, though. Costco has one store. There's a BJ's in Lebanon, NH and Sam's Club in Plattsburgh and Albany, NY. And Vermont does have a couple of Supercenters. Berlin and Derby. Do note that there are a few just across the border in NH (which is where most of these places open up anyway for tax reasons).
Speaking of Walmart, I noticed some of the Walmart supercenters are no longer open 24/7.

5 of the 21 Walmarts within 30 miles of me are open 24 hours, but many of the ones that used to close at midnight (including the one in my town) now close at 10 PM. The Walgreens near me that was open 24 hours now closes at midnight, despite being right across the street from a 24-hour CVS. The only supermarket open 24/7 is Price Chopper, 3 of the 8 Dunkins and 1 of the 2 McDonald's in town have 24 hour windows, plus there's Denny's, a couple of gas stations, and a TA truck stop.

Same here (for standard Walmarts -- no Neighborhood Markets up here). The only ones that operate 0600-midnight are in the seedy neighborhoods. A brand new Walmart in Tacoma opened a few years ago with 24/7 hours, but changed to part-time hours due to (from what I was told) crime and homeless issues.

Sherwood was almost anti-Walmart when it was coming in, so when they could no longer stop it, they put a resolution to the city council to make all businesses over 3,000 square feet to have open hours no greater than 5am-1am. THe Wal-Mart Hours here are 5-1 now.
A year or two ago Walmart almost universally closed all their 24 hour stores at midnight or so. That lasted a very short period of time, and many went back to remaining open 24 hours.
The Walmart Supercenter on Corunna Road in Flint closes at midnight and I think the Fenton Walmart Supercenter also closes at midnight. Other than that the other one's I know of are open 24 hours.

In the Boise area (including Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, etc.), about half of them used to be 24 hours stores. Over the past year or 2, they've
all shifted to closing at either midnight or 1 AM. The only 24 hour grocery store around here is Winco, but they have a good number of locations (and all of them are 24h). And they are large stores with a large selection of food, so in terms of groceries you're set.
There are only
3 2 24 hours pharmacies in the area: Walgreens on Cole and Fairview in Boise, Rite Aid on State and 15th in Boise, and
Walgreens on 12th Ave and 7th St in Nampa nope they close at midnight now, wow. The rest usually close at 10 (a bit earlier for some Rite Aids, particularly on Sunday).
For 24 hour retail places other than those, you're pretty much left to Jacksons and Maverik C-Stores (most are 24h, and they are plentiful), and about half of the McDonald's locations. Plus like Denny's and IHOP of course.
The Neighborhood Markets in my area are changing their hours to 6:00am - 11:00pm.
It's rare I need anything that early in the morning, but it's nice if someone's feeling unwell. They've always been empty stores, save the stock clerks and lone cashier, at 5am or so.

This isn't Sam's Club or Walmart but rather the Kroger store one mile from my house is changing from being open 24 hours to 6am-1am starting February 5th. The Kroger in Grand Blanc use to be open 24 hours and no longer is either. As a matter of fact I tried going to the Grand Blanc Kroger in the middle of the night one day after they stopped being open 24 hours.
On a tangentially-related note, Arvest Bank seems to be closing many of their locations inside Walmart. Arvest is owned by the Walton family. No explanation has been given.
