When the I-69 clusterfuck in Texas is completed, where do you think US 59 will end? I'm sure Texas will want to get rid of it as soon as the new highway is finished, as they have done with US 75, US 80 and US 81 among others. Will it end in Texarkana? Or will it be truncated farther north, perhaps at US 71 in Acorn, AR or even US 270 in Heavener, OK?
I bet US 59 gets truncated to Texarkana... eventually. :)
U.S. 81 is truncated? Where? As far as I knew, U.S. 81 is not truncated. It should be truncated in Bowie.
U.S. 59 would probably be truncated if it is replaced by an Interstate.

What's really strange is US-281 is a significantly longer highway; it runs clear from the Canadian border down to the far South end of Texas at the Hidalgo/Reynosa US/Mexico border crossing.
US 59 will be truncated in Oklahoma if at all. It runs concurrently with other highways between Heavener and Texarkana, and there's no reason to continue the concurrency. Texas has tended to remove US designations on parallel routes when an interstate is built.

My family in Broken Bow would endorse that idea wholeheartedly; back in the early '90's some of them (mostly my cousin who's now a judge) tried (rather quixotically!) to get I-49 rerouted through there (as well as Poteau to the north); I guess they fondly remembered the effort 30 years earlier to convert AR 21 into US 259. Something tells me they'd accept a 2dus just fine!

US 81 used to end in Laredo at the southern border.
US 59 should be truncated to Texarkana, AR (at Interstate 30's Exit 223). US 77 should be truncated to Victoria, TX (at its future junction with Interstate 69). US 83 should be truncated to Botines (where US 83 meets Interstate 35 at Exit 18). US 281 should end in San Antonio (probably at the Interstate 35/37 interchange).

It's not really that strange. US-81 was the "more important" route when the highways were laid out. US-281 was commissioned a few years later.
When the Interstates came along, US-81 in Texas was the natural route to be replaced, as it was still "more important". The southern end got truncated because it's now I-35.
Odd, I was on US90 yesterday in Houston. They can move the number if they like. Or nothing as I don't see all of this done in my lifetime.

How about this for an idea:
Keep US 59 in AR north of Texarkana;
Concur with US 71 south to Shreveport;
Take over Hearne Avenue (LA 3064/US 171) through Shreveport;
Take over US 171 to Lake Charles.
Essentially, take 59 out of Texas completely and run it east through Western Louisiana.
If that were the case then I wonder if it's possible for US 59 to take over US 259?
