Title: Route that ends at another route with a consecutive number
Post by: roadman65 on February 05, 2018, 07:02:06 PM
We have had a thread about consecutive route numbers that junction each other, but  never with one ending at another.   This here was inspired as I noticed that currently the north end of I-49 in Missouri is at I-435 which is concurrent with US 50 as well as I-470 that also ends with I-49 carrying also US 50 in the mix, that  means that Interstate 49 ends at its next higher number.

Whether Kansas City ever gets I-49 through the city or not, it still actually has its furthest point north and end at US 50 in Grandview.  I do not think that we have

How often does this kind of thing happen?

Probably fairly common among clustered state routes. Off the top of my head, VA 2 ends at US 1 at one and VA 3 Business at the other.

Iceland seems to have a ridiculous number of these. Not only is there clustering (the first two digits tell you pretty much exactly where on the island you are), but Iceland has no concurrencies, causing a LOT of short routes ending at other short routes.

For Virginia:

(As noted above) VA 2 ends at US 1 or 1 Business on both ends and VA 3 Business on one.
VA 28 at US 29
VA 72 at VA 71
VA 99 at VA 100
VA 118 at VA 117
VA 137 and VA 138 share a common endpoint with each other at VA 40
VA 145 at VA 144
VA 237 at VA 236

There used to be way more back in the day...

Maryland's numbering system lends itself very well to this. For instance, MD 188 ends at MD 187 in Bethesda, while MD 191 ends at MD 190 a few miles west of there.

I don't think this would happen often in Texas, where the route numbers are mostly assigned consecutively.  Earlier designations didn't even specify a number as they do now; they just declared a highway designation of a certain type and the next available number was assigned administratively.  The only example I can think of is Spur 77 ending at Spur 78.  Spur 78 was designated in 1939 as the road to the McDonald Observatory. A new facility was built nearby later and in 1990 the short road from Spur 78 to that facility was designated as a spur, without a number specified.  The Loop 77 designation (Spurs and Loops share a number pool) had been cancelled in 1963 so that number was used for the new road.

Old Spur 72 was cancelled in 1983 and reassigned in 1987.  73, 74, 75, and 76 were all in use in 1990.  It appears that 77 just happened to be the lowest available number when the road was designated so the consecutive arrangement wasn't planned.

Highway 4's southern end is at Highway 3 near St. Thomas
Highway 5's eastern end is at Highway 6 in Hamilton
Highway 9's western end of the eastern half is at Highway 10 in Orangeville
Highway 65's western end is at Highway 66 near Matachewan
The 402's eastern end is at the 401 in London
The 416's northern end is at the 417 in Ottawa

Utah tends to use a number clustering scheme for state routes, so there are a few:

UT 119 ends at UT 118 in Richfield.
UT 25 ends at UT 24 near Fish Lake.
UT 100 ends at UT 99 in Fillmore.
UT 43 ends at UT 44 in Manila.
UT 209 ends at UT 210 at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon.
UT 105 ends at UT 106 in Centerville.
UT 162 ends at US 191, which according to UDOT internal route logs is also concurrent US 163.
At one time, UT 272 across US 89 from UT 273 (it was two RIROs) in Farmington. The RIROs were reconfigured to an interchange, and soon after, both routes were merged into 273.
UT 162 once ended at UT 163 near Pineview Reservoir (both routes have been decommissioned since)

And my favorite, UT 90 ends at the US 89/US 91 concurrency, with consecutive numbers on both sides.

MN 22's north terminus at MN 23.
MN 27 has its western terminus at MN 28 - and MN 28 has its eastern end on a duplex with MN 27.
MN 36's western terminus is at I-35W.
MN 43's southern terminus is at MN 44.
MN 67's eastern terminus is at MN 68.
MN 72's southern end is at US 71.
MN 96's eastern end is at MN 95.

There's also the famed Faribault intersection, but I'll let MNHM expound on that. :)

AZ 97 ends at AZ 96, AZ 61 ends at US 60, and AZ 86 ends at AZ 85.  The original Arizona numbering convention was that state route numbers were consecutive from US Route numbers.  That's why there is so many 60, 70, 80, and 90 state highways in the state.

But 21, 3, nor 60 are consecutive... oh. ;-)

For the unaware, the short institution-serving MN-298 and 299 share a terminus with MN-60. This post reminds me that this spring I should get pictures of those two routes–I'll probably do it on the same trip I'm going to take to capture the final days of MN-110. In that regard, spring can't get here soon enough.

Also, your post made me realize how weird it is that MN-27 and 28 are connected as they are. Huh.

Famously, at least in Iowa lore, Iowa 1 ends at Iowa 2.

Not consecutive, but interesting...

PA-118. On its eastern end is PA-415, and on its western end is PA-405.

This is one of the first state highways I ever traveled on, so it holds a special place in my heart.  :colorful:

Illinois has clusters of similar numbers according to how they were established around a century ago, similar to what Takumi said.  All numbers 140-163 are in the far southern portion of the state, and numbers 90-111 (except 102) are in west-central Illinois.

There are some of these in southeastern Tennessee:

* TN 320 ends at TN 321 in East Brainerd (Chattanooga Metro Area).

* US 74, in its well-known and adequately signed state, ends at I-75 in Cleveland, but in reality, US 74 actually has a hidden concurrency with I-75 all the way to the I-24 interchange in Chattanooga.

Then there is also:

* GA SR 74 ends at I-75 in Macon, Georgia.

* Interstate 16 almost ends at US 17 in Savannah, Georgia, but not quite (it ends at Montgomery Street, which is just past it).

I cannot think of any others in my area at this very moment.

The only one in the Atlanta area that comes to mind is GA 236 ending at GA 237.

FL 21 and CR 21 end at FL 20. (Presumably they were once a single route that ran concurrently with 20.)

One segment of FL 40 ends at US 41, as does CR 40 farther south (same scenario).

Louisiana probably has a large amount. Routes tend to be semi-clustered, especially in the higher LA-x00's. Here's the few I found:

362 ends at 361
379 ends at 378
384 ends at 385
414 ends at 413 on both ends
416 ends at 415
417 ends at 418, and 418's other end is at 417
569 ends at 568
570 ends at 569
694 ends at 693
746 ends at 745
751 ends at 752
764 ends at 765
908 ends at 907
944 ends at 943
989-1 ends at 988
994 ends at 993
1164 ends at 1163
1182 ends at 1181 on both ends

there's a ton more. You could literally zoom in on any parish of Louisiana and find these

California examples (beyond the already mentioned Route 7 at I-8)

Route 2 ended at Route 1 in Santa Monica (disregarding all the relinquishment technicalities one can think of); from 1934-1936 Route 1 in this area was Route 3. (From 1936 to 1964 it was Alternate US 101 though)

Although the former Route 31 was primarily defined along today's I-15 between Route 91 in Corona and the I-15/I-215 junction in Devore, I wonder if the actual Milliken Avenue routing of signed Route 31 ever ended at now-former Route 30.

Unsigned Route 51 (Business 80) ends at US 50 in Sacramento

Not an example, but almost was one: Route 71's current terminus in San Dimas is at I-10, the former US 70.

Route 79 once ended at then-US 80 (now I-8)

Route 90's eastern terminus is at Route 91

Did Route 98 ever once terminate at US 99 in Calexico?

Current examples from Nevada:
*SR 120 ends at SR 119 in Fallon
*SR 158 ends at SR 157 at Mount Charleston
*SR 159 ends at SR 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump
*SR 207 ends at SR 206 near Gardnerville
*SR 226 ends at SR 225 north of Elko
*SR 305 ends at SR 304 in Battle Mountain
*SR 322 ends at SR 321 in Pioche
*SR 340 ends at SR 339 near Yerington
*SR 342 ends at SR 341 in Virginia City, and also has its other end at SR 341 near Silver City
*SR 377 ends at SR 376 near Manhattan
*SR 397 ends at SR 398 in Lovelock
*SR 399 ends at SR 398 in Lovelock
*SR 446 has one end at SR 445 (at Pyramid Lake) and the other end at SR 447 (in Nixon)
*SR 488 ends at SR 487 in Baker
*SR 824 ends at SR 823 near Smith, and SR 825 ends at SR 824 near Smith

Former examples in Nevada (post-1976 renumbering):
*SR 429 ended at hidden SR 430 (then US 395) in Washoe Valley, and SR 431 also ended at hidden SR 430/US 395 in south Reno. With the completion of I-580, SR 429 and SR 430 were both combined into US 395A.
*Hidden SR 530 (William St/US 50) ended at hidden SR 529 (Carson St/US 395) in Carson City. Following completion of earlier phases of Carson City Freeway, SR 530 was eliminated and SR 529 was shortened.
*SR 650 transitioned to SR 651 in Reno at the US 395 interchange. Both routes were absorbed into SR 659 when NDOT retook control of the entire McCarran Blvd loop.
*Had SR 140 become SR 291 during the 1976 renumbering as originally planned, then SR 292 would've ended at SR 291.

I actually thought, given the clustering scheme of post-1976 routes, there'd actually be more examples...

I think OH beats out MA Lol!

This is interesting to see how well the route numbering concept is for many state route designations though.  It gives us an insight to how numbers might of been conceived in some areas.

Florida where I live has a grid system, though not perfect, but you have many set that are consecutive but do not even touch at either end.  FL 435 and FL 436 are miles apart.  FL 407 and FL 408 are in separate counties.

FL 405 and FL 406 do come close, but not close enough as both are in Titusville city limits.
FL 527 and FL 528 come close in Pine Castle and over 43 years ago actually fit this criteria as FL 527 did end at its next number up at Orange and McCoy.
FL 526 and FL 527 did meet in downtown but no terminuses for either.

Anyway, its so great to see that this ended up to be so common.

Delaware has only two, with a couple near misses.

DE-8 ends at DE-9 in Little Creek.  DE-10 comes a couple miles short of doing the same thing.

DE-15 ends at DE-14 west of Milford.

DE-299 ends at US-301, just off by one.

Both DE-12 and DE-14 cross US-13, but don't end there.  They both end at DE-1.

I believe if you want reverse, NJ 36 counts in Keyport, NJ.  It terminates at NJ 35.  Years ago it even had both ends at  NJ 35 as the Eatontown Spur was not officially designated as part of Route 36 so it ended at the now defunct Eatontown Circle where Route 35 passes through.
