I still have to use Google once in a while, so I thought it would be handy (especially for new users) to have a list:
BGS - big green sign
FHWA - Federal Highway Works Administration
MTR - misc.transport.road
MUTCD - Manual for Uniform Traffic Contol Devices
[X]DOT - [state] Department of Transportation
They can be humorous, but they have to be actually used, and road/forum-related in some way.
RIRO (right in right out)
SPUI (single point urban interchange)
DDI (diverging diamond interchange)
TOTSO (turn off to stay on)
AASHTO (expansion of acronym not memorized)
NIMBY (not in my back yard)
FM- Farm to Market road (State route in Texas)
CR- County Route
CBBT- US 13 across the Chesapeake Bay.
HRBT- I-64 across Hampton Roads
MMBT- I-664 across Hampton Roads
OBT- Orange Blossom Trail (Orlando and Kissimmee in FL)
JYP- John Young Pky (Orlando- Kissimmee )
3DI - Three-digit Interstate [also: 3DUS - Three-digit U.S. Route]
BR - sometimes uses as shorthand for "Business Route", instead of typing 'Bus.'
IH - Interstate Highway (official designation for Interstates used by TxDOT)
RM - Ranch to Market Road (type of state highway in Texas, in the same classification as FM)
FYA - Flashing Yellow Arrow (a newer PPLT signal display) [also: FRA - Flashing Red Arrow]
PPLT - Protected/Permitted left turn
SHS - The "Standard Highway Signs" book, which supplements the MUTCD.

Fixed these for you...
PTC: Pennsylvania Turnpike Commisson
DRPA: Delaware River Port Authority
DRBA: Delaware River and Bay Authority
NJTA: New Jersey Turnpike Authority
ROW: Right of Way
VMS: Variable Message Sign
BANANA- Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone.
Specific to CA:
LRN: Legislative Route Number (pre-'64 renumbering effort; only signage on mileposts & structures).
SSR: Numerical state-shielded signage applied to any pre-'64 state-maintained facility; originally the old small
"bear" shields but replaced in the mid-50's by black-on-white signage similar to today's white-on-green shields.
DOH: Division of Highways; supplanted in '73 by CALTRANS when reconfigured as a statewide omnibus trans-
portation agency addressing multiple transportation modes (road, rail, waterway, airports, etc.)
CH&PW: California Highways & Public Works, late lamented bimonthly publication of DOH that included detailed
(informative as well as technical) articles regarding statewide highway projects as well as maps of recently adopted
freeway alignments and/or highway reroutings. Ceased publication in early 1967 as part of a pan-agency cost-cutting
measure (certainly not Ronald Reagan's finest hour!).
Definitely not as common and known an acronym as BGS (Big Green Sign), but I want to think that maybe I have also heard of LGS (Little Green Sign), which describes smaller green signs such as distance/mileage ones:
-Ex. (ROADBURG 7, ROAD CITY 123, etc.)-
Am I correct that this has been used before? :hmmm:

Yep, that's definitely correct, though LGS is used much less frequently.

In all seriousness, most of these could be found on the old MTR FAQ, but I have no idea if that's still available anywhere or not.
Also: U-220 = I-99?

If you're into viatology, there's USFR for United States Federal Route. :pan:
I thought we had a thread for this sort of thing, but that's probably true of just about everything now.
MN-specific:
TH - Trunk Highway (most commonly used in reference to state highways, but is used for all classes of state-maintained routes)
CSAH - County State-Aid Highway (county roads maintained partially with state funding)

NC too at one time used SR for Secondary Routes.
Also I found it funny that Indiana uses State Road for their state designations considering that is a term used mostly in the southern region.

I've been trying to think of topics for which that isn't true, but it's proving rather challenging. That's one of the reasons the increase in forum activity isn't reflected in thread volume - only in post volume.
