What is the longest distance shown on a milage sign both in and to a city in your (or really any other) state? (not counting celebratory markers at the beginning of cross-country routes)
A bit similar to this thread: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=4416.50 but my goal is to get a list of the longest signed milages in each state.
Two categories: one for distances on signs within each state (referencing any city), another for a sign (in any state) referencing a city in each state. In some cases, they may very well be the same.
For my state of Oregon, I'm quite confident that it's this one on I-5 referencing Portland.
As for within Oregon, it's probably this one on I-84. No picture so GSV will have to do. https://goo.gl/maps/6zs1FjYzSSA2
My unscientific guess for Minnesota is this one, on eastbound I-94 outside Moorhead.
EDIT: There's also a distance given for Madison, WI on I-94 which is 247 miles.
I’m thinking this is Utah’s longest:

Posted on I-80 westbound, leaving Park City.
For Michigan, I know there's a sign on WB I-94 just west of US-23 that mentions Chicago, at 239 miles. There might be one on SB I-75 in the Mackinac Bridge area that mentions Detroit, but I haven't been up that way in years
SB I-75 just south of I-475 in Ohio has signs mentioning Atlanta and Tampa (new ones, by the way). Also, Lexington KY makes a couple of appearances on I-75 between Toledo and Dayton.
Almost certainly the winner for Indiana is along US 41 just north of I-64 in southwest Indiana. The mileage sign lists the distance to Chicago at 279 miles.
So just to clarify, there's two lists going on here:
1 Longest distance that refers to somewhere in the state (the sign can be located out of state, as in the OP).
2 Longest distance on a sign in the state, that refers to any place, anywhere (the sign can refer to a city within the state).
There's one for NYC on the thruway near Ripley, but I can't find it in street view at the moment.

Ah. Yes. Thanks for that. I was looking several miles too close to Ripley.
I think that's the longest within the state (and it is artificially high, because no one would actually use the thruway to get to NYC). There's also some for Montreal that make it into the 300's IIRC. In any case, we're not going to beat 490, so that's the final NYS submission for Part 2.
There may be mileage signs referring to NYC from further afield (Youngstown, maybe?) to wrap up Part 1 for New York.
Unless there's something posted near Toledo (Youngstown is a hundred miles closer... just goes to show how indirect the Thruway is), I think that's the longest one to anywhere in NY unless Maine posted a sign with mileage to various cities along I-95 near the border (didn't see one when I did a quick street view check, though).
To my knowledge, this one (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3171656,-73.3584265,3a,75y,163.26h,74.46t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sKY4jAn6xRuJ4gwLw5zQWew!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) posts the longest distance mileage sign in Massachusetts.
This is one of the few in CT. SB CT 15 on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in Meriden just past the I-91 interchange. Has to be the highest to refer to any location.
The highest in-state sign for an in-state location would be the one on the Merritt Parkway in Greenwich for Hartford (82 mi.). The longest out of state sign for an in-state location would be on I-84 East just east of I-684 in Brewster, NY: Hartford 65 mi.
For NYC: Posted on I-80 EB in Ohio, just east of the 76/80 split. . .

This might be it for Alaska, taken in Deadhorse, at the north end of the Dalton Highway. I wouldn't be surprised if there's one with a four-digit mileage to Dawson Creek BC (mile 0 for the Alaska Highway -- mile 1422 is in Delta Junction AK):

I mean, if we're using that logic, we could say that the Thruway example doesn't count either.
Florida has them on I-95 for Miami starting in St. John's County out of Jacksonville well in the 300's. I do not think that I have seen anything higher in the Sunshine State over 225 and those are on US 1 and US 27 for Miami. Then you have Perry on US 19 from as far south as Memphis, where the US route first begins at US 41 that is close to that give or take.

The OP could say, but maybe a good rule of thumb would be that the sign can't count if intermediate control cities (or large metros, for non-freeways) are skipped.
I am sure South Dakota's would be the 337 miles to Rapid City heading west on I-90 just past Sioux Falls.
For Virginia I'm pretty sure the winner is a mileage sign for Roanoke located on I-81 just south of Exit 323(185 miles away).

Well my first example skips both Eugene and Salem. I count the Tampa one, it's not just a celebratory mark like on US-50 or I-40; I-75 doesn't even end in Tampa. If it was a sign for Miami right at the Canadian border, that would be a different story.

I don't think I've ever seen that sign before. Must be somewhere between Toledo and Bowling Green.
The longest in North Carolina is most likely on US-64 right after you cross over from Tennessee. A sign gives the distance to Manteo–564 miles, IIRC.

The longest mileage within Louisiana is this one for Dallas I think, at 173. I'm guessing the longest from another state to a city in Louisiana is he reverse of this. Probably a distance to Shreveport on either US 80 or I-20 eastbound leaving Dallas.

My initial thought was the sign on I-35, north of exit 96, which mentions St. Paul at 230 miles, but this clearly wins.
US 171 just outside of Lake Charles:

I'm trying to think of an Arkansas example. Probably the signs denoting the distance to St. Louis on US 67 (300+ miles). The first mention of Dallas on southbound I-30 just before Texarkana is only 194 miles.
I'm really not sure what Idaho's would be. I imagine it would be somewhere on US-95 for ones within Idaho, or possibly on US-93 in Nevada for referencing Idaho outside the state (I remember seeing a pretty big one for Twin Falls), but all the GSV imagery in these areas is pretty blurry so I can't really check these. I do know there is a mileage sign to Bend on US-20 just outside Caldwell, which stands out to me a bit, but there's probably longer. I think there are mileage signs to Boise in Utah on I-84 too.
Oklahoma is kind of a strange case, as we have one large control city in the center of our state and then control cities not that far over the border on every side. Wichita and Amarillo are both fairly deep in their respective states, but still not as deep as OKC is in Oklahoma.
That being said, I would be surprised if there's one in Oklahoma that outdoes this sign just east of Boise City, out at the end of the panhandle. I remember when I drove to the Oklahoma-adjacent parts of CO and NM and turned back toward home, seeing this sign gave me a very good idea of just how big a hole I had dug myself.

And the longest distance on a sign within each state......
Louisiana: Dallas 194 (I-30)
Pssst....I-30 doesn't run in Louisiana.

For Virginia I'm pretty sure the winner is a mileage sign for Roanoke located on I-81 just south of Exit 323(185 miles away).

Unless there's a sign for Winchester near Bristol then yeah that's probably the winner. Didn't think to check there since I-64 goes through Lexington, Staunton, and Charlottesville all well before Richmond.
This isn't official, just the farthest I could find.

Before ODOT district 2 came up with their goofy signs, along I-75, several years back, one of the more "notorious" milage signs was ODOT skipping a couple of states and directing folks along I-80, after Youngstown to New York City. 400 miles away.

Can't say I blame them. No cities of note along I-80 between Youngstown and the New York metro. Clarion? Hazleton? What are these places?

The winner for in-state reference is Winchester at 200 miles - https://goo.gl/maps/K92rG79hgcG2

The winner on a non-interstate is Harrisonburg at 165 miles on VA 33 leaving VA 14 near West Point - https://goo.gl/maps/jwVHpws9Gbq. There used to be a Virginia Beach 171 miles sign on US 58 but I believe it is gone now.

Haven't been out that way in a while, but I'm sure the longest distance on a mileage sign in California has to be on 395 in Mono County showing the distance to San Diego. There used to be a "Los Angeles 404" sign on 101 at San Antonio Road in the Bay Area, but it was removed during construction, and the longest in-state distance on I-5 is "Los Angeles 398" east of Woodland.
The longest in NJ that I've seen is probably this one:

Here's the longest distance on a mileage sign that does exist in the Bay Area, "Los Angeles 382". I took this photo over a week ago.

I think that's the longest distance listed to another point while still in that state.
Within Mississippi, the longest I've seen is on the Natchez Trace to Tupelo. It's in the 170s.

Before NJDOT redone the US 1 & 9 split in Woodbridge, Cape May was about 123 miles listed on a mileage sign that was short lived there. Since the redo, the contractors did not reinstall or copy the sign so its been gone since 2002 or 2003 despite only being there from 1998 onward.

The thing about this one: Only Atlantic City can be reached by continuing straight on the road (which involves a route number change from 42 to 322).
In order to access the other 3 roads, and be accurate on the mileage, you have to guess which routes they want you to use! Logic would dictate 42 to 322 to the GSP, but then again, logic would also dictate one would've taken the faster AC Expressway already...or have taken Rt. 55 for a more direct route!

For Illinois to a city in Illinois, probably this one with 371 to Chicago on NB I-57 after the IL 3/US 51 interchange (https://www.google.com/maps/@37.0604937,-89.1927929,3a,75y,23.82h,82.31t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sM1GwdIrevlRqv8wvjxD7Cw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)
For in Illinois but to a city in another state, probably the first distance sign with Memphis on the bottom line for I-57 - I believe that would be 496 on this sign south of the Manteno Exit (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.2336637,-87.860481,3a,19.1y,249.6h,88.1t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sFhqCQShQ80sGCl8ol6nJfQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en). If there is one for Memphis with a distance over 500 south of I-80 I cannot find it tonight.
I could have sworn there was a Distance Sign with Memphis on I-57 near the I-80 Exit, but I can't find it on Street View
Of course, IL's longest
should be on I-55, just South/West of US 41/Lake Shore Drive, with a Distance to New Orleans (or at least Laplace, LA)...
But then again, would you post that Mileage, using all I-55 Mileage, or would you post it using 55->90/94->57->55 more Direct routing?
About the only other Longer Intrastate ones that would be possible, is if US 51 has Mileage to South Beloit from Cairo or to Cairo from South Beloit or if US 45 has Mileage to Antioch from Brookport or to Brookport from Antioch. I don't think those exist, tho
Who knows, if I-57 thru MO and AR actually happens, maybe we'll get Long Distance Controls and Mileage on the I-57/I-30 corridor for Dallas in Chicago and for Chicago in Dallas. At the least, hopefully Memphis can be replaced with Little Rock on I-57, once I-57 actually reaches Little Rock
For Ohio, found someone's Baseball Roadtrip Blog, that has an I-80 East Mileage sign with 405 Miles to NYC on it. Blog is dated from 2011, so a few years old

I remember seeing a sign or two along I-40 in Flagstaff, Arizona promoting Los Angeles -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 485 Miles. Probably was one for L.A. being over 500 miles somewhere east of Flagstaff, as well.
Got a pic of Kentucky's yesterday, and as soon as I get it off my camera and onto Flickr, I'll post it here.
At least I'm pretty sure that it is; I don't think there is a mileage sign to St. Louis on I-64 between I-65 and the Ohio River/Indiana state line.
