Title: Sounds that drive you up the wall?
Post by: index on March 23, 2018, 08:57:00 AM
I have misophonia*, and as such, there are lots of sounds I cannot stand. To name a few, whispering, gum/food chewing, giggling, pencil sharpeners, nasaly voices, and wet shoes squeaking. People whispering, talking in a low voice, chewing loudly, or smacking their gum will make me angrily twitch, break small things like pencils, and fidget. Those ASMR videos you may have heard of are perfect piss-a-person-with-misophonia-off material, and I'm no exception. Those make me want to smash a window.

I'm trying in class to vent from people doing just this. My arms and hands are twitching, I'm angrily balling my hand into a fist, tappig
fingers, pulling keys off my keyboard, (putting them back on after though) tapping my feet, and pressing the tip of my pencil against my desk and breaking it, all because these motormouths who shouldn't even be talking in the first place won't stop. Oddly enough, when I hear wet shoes squeaking, I shiver and feel all cold. I don't know why. Also oddly enough, some sounds that most people with misophonia despise, like walking or driving on gravel, rain, and dripping water, I thoroughly enjoy.

When I was around 11, my brother would not stop chewing and smacking his cereal. Sounds annoying, right? Not just annoying for me. I was absolutely infuriated by this. I took his bowl, dumped it in the sink, and knocked his water bottle off the table when he didn't stop after I asked him to stop. I began to yell a slew of insults... Not my proudest moment. Around that age was probably when my anger from sounds like what I've listed was the worst.

*Misophonia is a disease that causes strong and usually angry, irritated, or infuriated reactions to specific sounds.

The squeaking of Styrofoam / polystyrene packaging makes me twitch. Dashboard or trim rattles in a vehicle over long periods of time is also quite annoying.

Office neighbor crunching Doritos at his desk

Office neighbor slurping yogurt at his desk

Sound of soda/beer pouring into a glass in a radio commercial (so refreshing aaaaaaaaah)

Petulant BEEP BEEP BEEP of Verifone chip card reader when it's time to remove your card (with 0.1 millisecond grace period)

Taptaptaptaptap of water dripping in a drain pipe after a rain

Belligerent crow arguments at 5 am

There's probably not a single person on this earth that wouldn't be undescribably distressed by the classic "fingernails on the chalkboard" sound - which just thinking about makes me shiver just a little bit - but thankfully that doesn't happen too often, unless your teacher might be a little off their rocker.  :-D  :paranoid:

So the most prominent one for me (that is common) would be wiping down (cleaning) tables. Both the sound of it, and how it feels when doing it yourself, I absolutely cannot stand. It puts a very uncomfortable and strange feeling on my ears, and it almost nauseates me a little bit, and I even grind my teeth. I don't know why, but that's just how I am, so basically I can never, ever be the person to wipe down tables (and if I am in the presence of someone doing so, it is going to be a long, painful minute for me) - this has caused some problems - the most prominent one is when I was at a art camp as a young kid, and all of us had to wipe down the tables after we were done painting or sculpting or whatever (fun fact: I actually painted a portrait of an Exxon gas station and sign at this camp that I still have, with my dad pumping gas I believe) - I could not do the chore myself, and in the presence of the other kids doing it, I was closing my eyes and covering my ears - the other kids, however, were annoyed and questioning my motives for not helping them clean up, but they just wouldn't understand.  :-|  :-/

I just remembered something else - metal utensils or anything else hard scraping against plastic trays (usually in cafeterias at schools or camp retreats or elsewhere) - this sound drives me even more nuts than the wiping down tables. This sound also reminds me of the "fingernails on the chalkboard" thing, but of course it is not quite as bad as that.  :-o

The sound of people breathing. Most people's  breathing is virtually silent, however My Dad breathes absurdly loud, and it has always driven me insane. I've never told him this though. What am I supposed to say? "Dad, please stop breathing."? :spin:

Also, the sound of someone eating cereal, especially in a quiet room. I'm also super self conscious when I'm eating cereal; I can not have another human being in the same room as me while I'm eating it. I just can't.

The sound of people popping bubble gum is absolutely hilarious. It's not annoying. It's automatically hilarious because it involves gum.

I know someone who set aside an entire day to try to figure out how to pop their gum without blowing a bubble. They gave up, although they are eminently capable of blowing bubbles. People who are good at bubbling usually are not very good at making that popping sound. Oh well. Bubbling is even funnier.

Ours at work pop up a big green APPROVED, but some people refuse to pull the card out until the Verifone starts honking at them. I guess they're afraid the credit card network is going to unapprove them.

Last time I went to Target, they had configured theirs to emit a soft gong-like chime.

Mike Emrick's voice (NBC hockey play-by-play guy). His voice is whiny and, when combined with his style of calling a game, it makes him sound constipated. If our game is on NBC, I usually pause the broadcast, mute the TV, and then sync the video to the radio stream (usually via an Amazon Echo) so that I don't have to listen to the NBC commentators.

For whatever reason the signal in my Sonic is obnoxiously loud.  It seems like most of the cheaper daily drivers I've had all have an issue with a super clicky turn signal noise.  My significant other loves to make turn signal noises when I'm driving because she knows it annoys me so much.  I rather take the Dumb and Dumber most annoying sound in the world at this point.

Also, I wanted to throw in that I agree with several of the posters that the chip reader sound effect is pretty awful.  The new sound effect Target uses is very pleasing to the ears IMO.

Warbling car alarms.  I can tolerate repeated horn honking as an alternative alarm method, but up-and-down modulation drives me fucking nuts!  First heard this type of noise back about 1967 or so as the intro to the original theme to the Ironside TV show -- and it was jarring and bothersome back then.  Guess it's made to not only attract attention but to mess with the heads of would-be thieves!

The one that drives me bat&*#$ crazy is the one that has the 6 different sounds that you hear on just about every car in the same sequence.  When I lived in Philly, I think I heard that alarm no less than 4 or 5 times a day.  Here's a video of it, but the sequence I heard was slightly different, with the third and sixth sound swapping positions

Yeah, the soft gong-like chime is what I've been hearing more and more vs. the buzzing.

It would be nice if a chip transaction didn't take so long, but I don't know why it does or if there's a good reason (and I work for a credit card company!)

We're getting off-topic.

Individuals cannot do a lot about the tone and pitch of their talking, and this isn't a thread for "issues I don't like". We get it...a general dislike of vomiting puts you into the least-exclusive club of all.

Read the first post again; it was about particular sounds that are annoying.

I wouldn't exactly say I like the sound of vomiting, but I did used to think it was hilarious in college.  But that was assuming the individual was vomiting because they were drunk or had otherwise cashed in one too many fun tickets, not because they were sick from something else.

I absolutely do not miss the sound of modems and fax machines connecting.  We still have fax machines at work, but they must use VoIP or some other technology, because I don't hear a sound when they're connecting to another fax machine.

And of all things political, perhaps one shouldn't speak ill of those who were in a genuine tragedy such as seeing 17 classmates killed in front of them. Regardless of your stance on gun issues, I think that comment was uncalled for.

I assume cjk means the sound of someone in the stall taking a massive dump.  I hate that too, and go out of my way to avoid going #2 in shared public bathrooms.  I know that, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go, but...ugh, anywhere but there.

I think we can all agree that the sound of a person loudly passing gas is one of the most hilarious sounds imaginable.

Yes, Mel Brooks proved that definitively in Blazing Saddles.

Since we were discussing songs that have been censored for terrestrial radio play, I'd like to remind everyone that ABC once broadcast Blazing Saddles, and one of the many edits they made to the movie was removing the fart sounds from the campfire scene.

The sound of people breathing. Most people's  breathing is virtually silent, however My Dad breathes absurdly loud, and it has always driven me insane. I've never told him this though. What am I supposed to say? "Dad, please stop breathing."? :spin:
One of my uncles breathes while eating anything, and moans audibly. It's very unsettling. You could compare it to having an orgasm while eating... Ewww :banghead:

Basically, ASMR is akin to having an orgasm in your brain for some. Ever get that weird tingling feeling while listening to your coworker bang away at a mechanical keyboard? Or someone softly speaking while marking up a paper?

What about the sound of someone's repeated loud belching?
Would most people agree that is a disgusting and offensive sound?

The problem with it is that you are wondering if you are about to hear the sound of the chunks hitting the floor.

I do too. Which is why I have a mechanical keyboard at home and in the office. I also just really enjoy having tactile feedback and the feeling that a physical link produces a desired result (e.g. mechanical keyboard, tuning knobs). Enough of these captive displays in cars!

I don't experience any tingling feeling at all. It's quite literally just useless noise to me. Don't know how it would feel and probably never will.

Regarding farts and belches: Timing is everything, sometimes it breaks tension at the right moment. Used too often, one becomes a sad clown.

I'm kind of surprised at the sounds of food being eaten considered as annoying. Never really gave it much thought...we all eat, after all.

This, too.

That my car makes distinctive sounds when using the various HVAC controls, the shifter makes its own dull clicks, the clutch pedal squeaks just a little bit, the pedal faces have a "tap" to it, the radio having it's own touch, the feel of the objects moved just at the right times, the switchgear's feedback gentle but certain...that's a tactile enjoyment that's personal to the owner.

I'm fine with a phone or tablet having a smooth surface, since it has to change depending on the applications in use. But you depend on the feel of some constants when hurtling around at speed, that you know what sounds normal and natural from the abnormal, so there's reasons auto manufacturers design things in that way.

When I worked in high rises, I was really bad (or good, depending on how you look at it) at farting in empty elevators 3 seconds before the doors opened at a floor I was not expecting the elevator to stop at.

Luckily, I don't work in a high rise any more.

The late Malcolm Kilduff's sneezing.

Mac Kilduff was the assistant press secretary to JFK who announced his death in Dallas in 1963. He also held the Dictaphone machine that recorded the swearing-in of LBJ on Air Force One.

Mac married a woman from my hometown and they moved there when they retired. I worked with Mac for a few years and was proud to call him a friend.

Mac put on several dozen pounds between 1963 and 1977 or so, when he moved to Kentucky. He was a rather portly fellow. Much bigger than I am, for those who know me. Anytime he would sneeze, it sounded like an elephant bellowing while having an orgasm. It was loud and if you heard that, you couldn't help but notice it.

Anytime he would cut loose with one of those loud, no-doubt-embellished-mightily sneezes, his wife would say, ever so sweetly, "God bless you, Mac."

I'm posting in the "drive you up a wall" thread, but the reality is that the sound made me laugh.

One thing I learned from living in NYC is that, if a subway train comes into the station, and all the cars except one are packed, and the car that isn't packed is empty or only has one person, there's a reason.  Usually it's the heating or AC aren't working, or there's a godawful smell in there.  Shortly after we moved to Chicago, we were taking the L home, and my wife insisted on getting in the one empty car on the train.  I tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted.  Turns out the BO of the homeless person in there had drive everyone else out.

I think car alarms with horns would qualify.  How many times does an alarm go off because of driver carelessness?  If someone did try to break in, because of so many false alarms, the thief would have no problem in doing so as we all seem to ignore it now.

However, I hate when someone sets it off and it takes them about 60 seconds to deactivate it.  Many times I just want to yell out "Shut that fricking alarm off, your being rude by allowing it to sound off this long!"

Could be worse.  I once lived in a subdivision where someone's house alarm went off all weekend because they were out of town and no one could get in touch with them to get them to shut it off (this was the early 1990s).  We called the cops and they were like "nothing we can do."

Bingo.

Does sound apocryphal.   To my knowledge the typical third rail voltage and amperage does not produce heating, and if outdoors in cold climates may need installation of heating elements to prevent ice or frost from forming on the third rail.

Would pouring liquid on the third rail cause a short circuit and heating?  Maybe, I don't know.

Puking in a crowded subway car is a disaster.
I've witnessed that and yes, it is.  I've also read a possibly apocryphal tale about someone puking on the live third rail and what happened afterwards.
Fried vomit?

If it helps, this allegedly happened on the NYC subway, in (I think) an above-ground station.

No, it was one of those chain emails, or maybe a forum post somewhere.
