Title: It amazes me how stupid some people actually are on the roads
Post by: Crash_It on April 03, 2018, 11:30:33 PM
I witnessed this today while driving home from work on NB/EB IL137 in North Chicago.

I've actually done this too (run a red in front of a cop), although in my case it was unintentional - the area had 2 intersections close together and you could easily mistake the light for the intersection further ahead for your light. The cop told me I wasn't the first and gave me a warning.

I think in most cases it's unintentional.  People see the green light and mistakenly just go.  Honestly, any one of us could do it also, and you would never realize your mistake because you simply went thinking you had the green.

I nearly did this once on RI 246 northbound at Twin River Road in Lincoln.  Since the casino went in, there are now two turn lanes and one through lane.  As I approached the signal and gave it a quick glance, my brain though "green light - OK", even though the green lights were for the left turns.  Fortunately, my passenger corrected me, and I stopped.  Was slightly relieved when my passenger turned to me and said "Don't worry, I've seen people mistake these lights before."

The only other time I recall going through a red light when I thought it was green was years ago on Highland Avenue at Marlborough Road/Traders Way in Salem (MA).  Realized I went through the red when someone blew their horn at me.  A couple of days later, when approaching the same intersection, I recognized my mistake.  At some point, the phasing of the signal had been changed.   The exclusive left turn phase, which had come after the through green since the signal was installed, had been changed so it now came before the through green.  Chalk it up to the perils of expectancy - routinely went through that intersection and had been conditioned to expect through green after side street got the red.

This is also a case where the hobby can be the source of mishaps. I have actually made this mistake once and almost made this mistake a couple more times because I was fascinated by an unusual configuration of the left turn signal and was staring at it rather than the signal controlling my lane.

"Driver ran red because he/she was looking at the next signal" is a situation that cries out for engineering countermeasures in the case of closely spaced signals.

I almost did today because I was focused on the overhead mast lights two intersections away and didn't see the simple single-pole lights at the first intersection I was about to pass through.

The cop didn't help the situation by pulling into the intersection before activating the strobe lights.
