There have been several landslides and washouts in the mountains this year. US 221 is closed indefinitely between Blowing Rock and Linville due to the road surface washing away. I believe I-40 had a landslide occur a few weeks ago as well. Shit has been crazy.
Fortunately the Linn Cove Viaduct reopened so at least that way to Grandfather Mtn is open. The only open road was NC 105. I think the Pkwy is still closed near Deep Gap (N of 421) because cracks appeared in the pavement and they discovered the slope it is on was starting to fail.
