Title: How many big Pennsylvania Turnpike Cutouts remain?
Post by: DevalDragon on June 29, 2018, 01:42:55 AM
The Pennsylvania Turnpike had large "PENNA TURN - PIKE" cut outs at the entrances of the Turnpike: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9992688,-78.2342345,3a,42.2y,97.47h,94.89t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqYAH3JAhH_9xwzDMmXBL0Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

I noticed on GSV that they have been replacing them with much less interesting BGS versions:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1526651,-77.6124241,3a,24.5y,287.67h,94.26t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s-DQ8FF8AKQ7nqHjRt5zpmg!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo2.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3D-DQ8FF8AKQ7nqHjRt5zpmg%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D187.5%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656

Does anybody keep track of which exits have the cutouts and which are BGS? I'm most curious about the one in Breezewood. I will be passing thru next week and want to know if I should go thru in daylight to get pictures.

I got on 511PA and looked at live traffic cams.  The cutout in Breezewood is definitely there from US 30 WB at the entrance to the Turnpike.

I wasn't sure where to post this because the PA Turnpike would fall under the "Northeast" and "Midwest - Great Lakes" boards. It could also fall under "Traffic Control."

Maybe we should get a separate category for Turnpikes / Toll Roads?

Generally, if it could go into multiple regions, it goes into one of those regions (and it usually doesn't matter which one). It usually doesn't go in General unless it's cross-country.

Along the eastern I-276 stretch & as of 2017 GSVs; four of those big cut-outs still remain: two along US 1 (Exit 351) and two along US 13 (current Exit 358, the northbound one is very faded).

FWIW, almost all discussion specific to PA can be found in the Northeast Board.

Most states that are split between boards have one de facto "primary" board where statewide threads tend to get posted, and where users tend to gravitate to look for discussion of that state. In PA and NY, it's the Northeast Board. Any discussion of those states in other regional boards is usually specific to the area that board covers, not statewide discussion.

Looking at the most recent Street View in the eastern part of the Turnpike, it seems the old cutouts remain at Carlisle, Gettysburg, Harrisburg East (only from Eisenhower Blvd), Lebanon-Lancaster, Morgantown (from PA 10), Bensalem (including the slip-ramp from the shopping center), and Delaware Valley (soon to be reconfigured, so not for long). The non-cutout versions exist at Blue Mountain, Downingtown, Valley Forge (only from Mall Blvd), Norristown, and Willow Grove. Most expressway connections and places where the free side of the toll plaza is maintained by PennDOT don't have any big Turnpike keystones at all.

If you're referring to the I-276 eastbound-only on/off ramps to PA 132 (Exit 352/Street Road); I don't believe that there was a large cut-out PA Turnpike sign for the entrance ramp given its current E-Z Pass ONLY status.  I already mentioned about the ones existing at the Bensalem/US 1/Exit 351 interchange in my earlier post.

I meant the slip ramp into the main toll plaza of Bensalem, since it's all the same interchange. I realize the wording "slip ramp" was a little confusing since the PTC loves to call their E-ZPass-only exits slip ramps even though they're really full or half interchanges. IIRC none of the E-ZPass-only ramps have the big keystones.

And I know you mentioned Bensalem, I was just listing them all east of Blue Mountain.

Fair enough although that particular cut-out sign seems to be smaller than the previously-listed others.  The GSV (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1363373,-74.9649291,3a,75y,150.15h,73.4t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1ssY2Lkmq0pxDDGVRjQvuChg!2e0!5s20161001T000000!7i13312!8i6656) shows an empty post foundation next to the single-post sign.  The oldest GSV dating back to 2013 shows the same thing.  One has to wonder if a larger two-posted cut-out sign existed prior to 2013.
