Title: Renumbered Interstate 580/US 395 exits?
Post by: The Ghostbuster on July 27, 2018, 04:05:21 PM
In the latest edition of the Rand McNally Road Atlas, it shows that the exits on Interstate 580/US 395 have been renumbered from using US 395's mileage to using Interstate 580's mileage from the freeway's southern terminus. Have the exits been renumbered? Or is this an error on Rand McNally's part?

I'm confused. US 395 is nowhere near I-580, at least in California.

I think this is a reference to Nevada's I-580 (which is concurrent with US 395)

As of two weeks ago when Alex and I drove that stretch (July 11 to be exact), the exit numbers still reflect U.S. 395 mileage and have not been renumbered. The post miles, however, do reflect I-580 mileage. There are even standard green mileposts found along the 2017-opened segment between U.S. 50/395 and Fairview Drive (Exit 38) that reflect I-580 mileage, along with the typical Nevada-style post mile.

As a Reno resident and someone who keeps up on local road & freeway projects, I can also confirm that no exit numbers have changed. Furthermore, I have not seen any indication from NDOT that there is a desire to change any exit numbers.

The situation with I-580/US 395 is very similar to I-515/US 95 in Las Vegas. When I-515 was finally signed circa 1994-1995, the exit numbering on the freeway was maintained with US 95 mileposts. The US 95 freeway was built on new alignment gradually over about two decades, with the interstate spur route applied upon construction reaching final extents to Railroad Pass. Both interstates terminate at the parent, with the cosigned US highway continuing as the through route maintaining exit number continuity. The only difference is that I-580/US 395 has always used "IR 580" white mileposts (even before the route was signed) while I-515/US 93/US 95 has always used "US 95" white mileposts (wherever you can actually spot them in the field).
