I used to frequent Piestewa Peak frequently as the hiking trail was located near my house in Phoenix. The view from the top is pretty cool in that you can see the entirety of Arizona State Route 51 from downtown north to AZ 101. I put together a small blog post on the Highway on Surewhynotnow and the hiking trail which overlooks it:

I've climbed Piestewa Peak (then known as Squaw Peak) several times, and it does provide spectacular views of the city and the SR 51 freeway (which was still under construction the first time I scaled the mountain).

The first time I went up there was In the 1990s when Northern still crossed the Phoenix Mountains. I moved to the area back in 01 right as the infrastructure development in the Phoenix area was really getting going. Always felt strange to walk down 32nd Street and see a Freeway where there used to just a surface street running southward towards the mountains.
