Friedberg, Germany has pedestrian signals featuring Elvis Presley (https://www.npr.org/2018/12/06/674116968/elvis-presley-helps-pedestrians-cross-the-street-in-german-town?utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=203006). Blue suede shoes optional.
Seems like it would be hard for the colorblind to distinguish between Walk and Don't Walk. You'd have to rely on signal positioning.

Unless you can distinguish between standing and dancing Elvis.

For those, you'd need Carl Perkins. ;-)
I'm surprised neither Tupelo nor Memphis had thought of it first!
Is that standing Elvis, or a drunk taking a leak?

The two are clearly different, but to me, neither one particular reads as "Walk" or "Don't Walk" so much as both reading as "Gyrate in place".

MUTCD would not allow that.

My thought exactly. The second one is somebody slipping on the wet pavement because Elvis pissed all over it.

And we know how every jurisdiction in the United States follows the MUTCD verbatim, down to the smallest iota. :-|

It also doesn't allow things like blue stripes between double yellow lines, rainbows between crosswalk lines, murals in low-volume intersections, and other assorted fun things, but municipalities do them anyways and the FHWA has more important things to worry about.

How do you think the colorblind function now?

Huh? Who needs colors to distinguish ped signals?

Ah, so we agree, then.
I guess we're talking past each other, then. I thought you were implying that color-blind people rely on signal positioning already.
