Title: FL TOLL 293 Mid-Bay Bridge Closed Due To Corrosion
Post by: Brian556 on January 11, 2019, 10:51:56 AM
The FDOT press release does not mention the reason for the closure. http://static.ow.ly/docs/Mid-Bay%20Bridge%20Closure%20Update%20011019_8aly.pdf (http://static.ow.ly/docs/Mid-Bay%20Bridge%20Closure%20Update%20011019_8aly.pdf) Hmmmm....

This news report https://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/20190109/mid-bay-bridge-could-be-closed-a-couple-of-weeks (https://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/20190109/mid-bay-bridge-could-be-closed-a-couple-of-weeks) mentions corroded cables, which does not make sense, given the type of bridge

The article mentions a 25-day closure in the year 2000 for similar reasons

Ugh.  That is the most direct path into Destin from the north.

The bypasses are to go East on US 98 to US 331 or West on US 98 to SR 85 in Fort Walton Beach.  It is going to be a mess for the locals and worse if it gets into tourist season...

Maybe this bridge has internal cables like the I-526 Wando River bridge in Charleston, SC?  A routine inspection found a snapped cable last year and closed that bridge for a few weeks.
