Title: Amarillo TX: Overhead School Zone Sign on Resdential Street + Something Extra
Post by: Brian556 on February 24, 2019, 01:35:29 AM
Now this is strange. Also, can't help but notice the lack of signage at the crosswalk.

If you turn to the right, you will see a diamond-shaped sign with the image of a tiger on it. If memory serves me right, these were installed by Stanley Marsh, owner of the Cadillac Ranch

There's a similar overhead setup on US-70 in Lone Grove, OK, although that makes slightly more sense, being a 5-lane street.

Here's one on Lake Ave. in Rochester, NY but without a speed limit. Not a residential street but overhead school zone signs are not very common here even on wide streets.

MUTCD says you are supposed to have them on multi-lane roads, when there cannot be one sign for each lane. Same as for RR cantilevers. Yet, it permits one stop sign for more than one lane, leaving drivers in the left lane unable to see the stop sign in certain situations.  :pan:

That is one of many artistic/fake signs in people's yards and acreages around the area.  One of the late Mr. Marsh's lasting legacies.  Not a whole lot left of the Cadillac Ranch installation, between the weather and the effects of time.  When I lived/worked up there, that was one of the most popular subjects that questioning hotel guests would ask me the directions for.
