Title: Longest Stretch of Interstate....
Post by: thenetwork on February 26, 2010, 06:02:50 PM
As we continue some of the record-holding interstate threads elsewhere, let me add a few categories myself:

1) Longest stretch of 2di Interstate in between other 2/3di interstates.  :hmmm:

2) Longest stretch of 3di Interstate in between other interstates. :hmmm:

3) Longest stretch of any interstate in between any other numbered US or State routes. :hmmm:
(Since nearly every non US or state highway is a city or county road, and since some states use County Route Numbers &/or shields on their BGSs while others don't, these are not to be included).

Have fun!

1)

* I-80 between I-5 in Sacramento and I-15 in Salt Lake City ~650 miles
* I-94 between I-90 in Billings and I-29 in Fargo ~ 600 miles

I think these are the longest if we count between 2di Interstates

2) probably I-196 in Michigan or I-390 in New York.

2) #1 - I 135 Kansas - 84 miles from I 235 to I 70
    #2 - I 196 Michigan from I 94 to (Unsigned) I 296 - 77 miles

Chris: I-80 would win overall even including 3dis, IF unsigned I-580 in Carson City is excluded.

For #2, I-196 goes 77 miles between I-94 and unsigned I-296 (US 131), and 81 miles to I-96; I-390 is 67 miles from I-86/NY 17 to I-90.

However, I-135 is longer between I-235 in Topeka and I-70 in Salina (84 miles).

I-335 is probably one of the longer roads in which there are no Interstates at all between its termini (at 50 miles from I-35 to I-70).

Does secret I-194 in Bismarck count?

For 3) I'd venture to guess I-90 between US-16 and I-90 Business between Buffalo and Gillette Wyoming, which is 64 miles. The only other state I can think of that it might be in would be Arizona- you'd be looking for a state with a lot of space and a sparse highway system (Wyoming doesn't have a sparse highway system, but lots of space).

I think the I-580 to I-15 stretch of I-80 takes the cake, but a close second would be I-70 between I-15 and I-76

isn't the Bonneville section of I-80 in Utah plenty long?  it is 43 miles between the Knolls and Wendover exits, and neither of those is a state or US highway, so maybe from West Wendover, NV (Alt US-93) to Timpie, UT (state route 196), which is 78 miles between state or US highways.

if there is a state highway in there that I am forgetting, Google Maps didn't show it.

that said, Knolls and Wendover both exit onto old US-40, so not too long ago this question would've had a different answer.  (And old US-40 is still driveable.  Barely.)

furthermore, since I-580 is signed as US-395, there is no signed interstate along I-80 between I-15 and Sacramento.  Either Business I-80 or I-5 is the signed interstate that is next, to the west, after I-15, depending on your definition of the question.

If a business route counts as a signed interstate, then there are several business loops between I-5 and I-15.  If only a business loop freeway, a former red-white-and-blue interstate, counts, then it is Business I-80 (former I-80 at former I-880).  If it's a current interstate freeway, then I-5.

The Wendover/I-80 Business Loop is also SR-58 in Utah, so that cuts the distance to about 75 miles (according to Wikipedia's I-80 in Utah page).

How about that stretch of I-80 between I-84 in Utah and I-25 in Wyoming.
I'm surprised many of you have not listed I-476 as the longest 3di. The I-195's of New Jersey and Massachusettes are pretty long. The I-495 route in Massachusetts is probably one of the longest bypasses.

Well, we're talking about the longest distance between other interstates, not the longest route end to end.

Although, you inadvertently bring up an interesting point, here. I-476 crosses I-78, I-80, and I-81 all without a direct connection. So, if we choose not to count places where highways cross but do not intersect, then I-476 wins the 3di category. From I-276 to I-81 north of Scranton is 111.04 miles.

Oops! I wonder where the I-195s in N.J. & Mass would rank.
