Title: Roadgeek nicknames you were given
Post by: inkyatari on April 08, 2019, 10:32:43 AM
Has anyone been given nicknames based on your love of roads / geography / maps?

I was (am) so in love with maps, and so good at finding my way around, that my dad on one vacation nicknamed me Rand McNally.

I'm glad he didn't nickname me "Check-chart!"

"PatPat" , a variation on TomTom.

Road Warrior.  Seemed a little cliche to use it on here so went for a Mad Max theme as my user name.

I, too, have been referred to by friends and family as Rand McNally.

When maps come up in conversation, I refer to myself as a "map geek".

My wife calls me "the human GPS." Some cousins have called me "human road map."

When my fraternity brothers caught wind of my hobby, I was given the simple nickname of "Roads," which didn't last more than a year or so. Other than that, I've never actually been given any nicknames regarding my interests.

Over the years, I've gotten called:

1. Human GPS

2. Walking Road Map

3. Mr. Maps

4. Map-man

5. The GPS before there was a GPS.

I've been called several variations of things already mentioned, but none of them ever stuck to the point that they were a regular nickname.

Human road map

Same. I was the guy with directions when I worked for the c-store.  I'd joke with my co-workers that I loved telling people where to go  ;) :o  :hyper:

When I was younger, my father wouldn't ever stop calling me "geography textbook", if that counts.

Maps have always been an extension of my interest in roads so I guess it kinda can count. I've been referred to by some friends as a human GPS.

Depending on how obnoxious I am being, either "living GPS", or "Backseat driver".

My son is even better with maps and directions than I am.  I think my wife calls him the Human GPS

When I was sketching out my proposed highways in old atlases, I was called the Kid Cartographer, and later on, Hank McNally.

If there's a trend here, I'm missing it.  :sombrero:

I've been more frequently called the map man, or the directions man.

Benny Beltway.  My parents when I was about 20.  We lived a mile from the Capital Beltway and it was a frequent topic.

I haven't been given a nickname, but this is only a small part of me.

Are there any Objectivists here? Ayn Rand McNally would make a good handle.

Did Rand prefer rail travel? There was one Reaganaut who was a huge railfan and wanted to increase AMTRAK funding when most Republicans didn't.

Wouldn't surprise me, as Atlas Shrugged was pretty much about rail travel.
