I've been going through some of my older California Highway photos to see what routes I could flesh out into blogs on Gribblenation. The first route up was CA 131 which runs four miles from US 101 east to Point Tiburon. CA 131 has an interesting back story given Point Tiburon was once an important ferry landing location for rail and automotive traffic. Prior to 1964 the route of CA 131 was part of LRN 52 which once even extended west of US 101/LRN 1. I'm to understand that at one point that LRN 52 had a proposed extension to San Francisco via a bridge from Angel Island to San Francisco.

CA-131 was also going to be this proposed alternate Golden Gate Bridge from Marin County and direct to the Embarcadero though. but that was cancelled.

Does anyone have any documentation on how far that idea of building a bridge from Angel Island got? The timing of creating Angel Island State Park by 1955 seems like it was probably partially driven to stop some sort of infrastructure plan given the timing. Apparently the AAroads page on 131 had a link to an article that had more detail but it seems to have gone dead. Nonetheless considering LRN 52 was adopted back in 1919 it would seem the Route was primarily driven to take advantage of the ferry terminal at Tiburon Point more than anything.
Info on the Tiburon Bridge proposal from 1962 (which would have tied into the portion of the Central Freeway from Golden Gate Avenue north to the Embarcadero that never was built) -

Well that's interesting, it's hard to envision how that would look in San Francisco Bay. Was there some sort of plan to upgrade LRN 52 to a freeway also?
Just saw this 1960s rendering of a Tibuton bridge with Kearny Street near Fishermans Wharf being the landing point

2 year bump... but I clinched CA 131 yesterday!
I didn't know about the history behind Tiburon Blvd, but given it's proximity to San Francisco and the current Ferry terminal, it makes sense.
I was disappointed to find out the surface route was barely signed. Yes it's signed at US 101 and at the west terminus going east, but there's no reassurance signs in the eastbound direction. There is one sign in the westbound direction however!

At least it has a reassurance shield now. I don't recall any when I clinched 131 in 2014.
