Title: What is your favorite road sign?
Post by: Roadgeekteen on August 04, 2019, 05:16:51 PM
Doesn't have to still exist. Mine is the standalone 128 sign on MA 9 east with control cities of Dedham and Gloucester.

In terms of design I don't have a clear favorite, but I do like these:

and the old (European) stop sign

In terms of what the sign represents, there can only be one:

Best. Exit. Sign. Ever. In NE Nova Scotia, pointing travelers to the awesomely scenic Cabot Trail:

(But I wish "masterpiece" were more visible, by lowering the distracting cloud.)

The yellow STOP and YIELD signs are pretty cool, but they're very rare to find. Any sign still using button copy is really nice too.

In terms of my absolute favorite, that's really hard for me to decide. There's quite a lot of them that I really like personally.

I'm going to cheat and offer a few.

I've played this one in various game threads.  Burgess Junction, Wyoming.  July 25, 1999.

"No Parking" engulfed in a lava flow in Hawaii Volcanoes NP.  August 28, 2006.

Don't Trash Alaska.  Glenn Highway.  June 20, 2001.

This might be how that sign got that way (photo April 1, 2003, courtesy of the Hawaii Volcano Observatory):

The ones on I-70 eastbound on the downhill approach to Denver where they say things like "TRUCKERS YOU ARE NOT DOWN YET".

For those unfamiliar I have some of them (not great photo quality, unfortunately):

The Southern Yosemite Highway sign on CA 41 north of CA 145 clearly isn't a Caltrans job nor used any sort of real Highway font but I like the color scheme and clean look:

On I-70 westbound approaching Breezewood, there was a sign that had a policeman pointing to the motorist and said YOU!!! SLOW DOWN!!! or something to that effect. I thought that was a cool sign, mainly because it made you aware that you were coming to a T intersection at US 30.

One version of that sign is now on display at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg:

I used to like the NJ Turnpike's old signs before the MUTCD forced them to conform.  The arrows and the large exit numbers were really cool!

That reminds me of another favorite of mine, this inside Banff NP on the TCH.  January 21, 2000.

Your post reminds me that my father liked the moose crossing signs in Ontario so much, he ordered one from a place in Toronto and had it hanging in their garage for many years. I ought to ask my mom if I can have that sign to hang in my garage. Roughly this style of sign:

US 101 California-style for current signage.  Oregon's state route shield with the eagle for no longer extant signage.
