Title: Shortest State Highway (California)
Post by: Max Rockatansky on August 18, 2019, 03:41:23 PM
This topic came to mind after visiting what's left of CA 225 in Santa Barbara.   I've seen many definitions of what criteria makes a highway "the shortest"  in California from an assortment of different arguments:

-  What Highway is the shortest that is actually signed?
-  What Highway is the shortest by completed miles?
-  What Highway is the shortest factoring relinquishment?

As it stands presently these are the top five shortest State Highway which I'm aware of:

CA 225

-  This Route appears to be under 0.10 miles on the Post Mile Tool south of US 101 on Castillo Street in Santa Barbara.

CA 275

-   This Route consists solely of former US 40/99W on the Tower Bridge in Sacramento and presently is only 0.14 miles long.

CA 77

-  CA 77 is an approximately 0.35 mile freeway in the Bay Area that was never even close to be compete to full scale.  At present moment this is the shortest state highway I'm aware of which is actually signed.

CA 283

-  This is a former segment of US 101 in Rio Dell that is still State Maintained

CA 153/CA 265

-  Both Routes are 0.50 miles long but CA 153 is touted (incorrectly) as the shortest Signed State Highway.  CA 265 is a former segment of US 99 in Weed which connects I-5 to US 97.

Seventh place is CA 282 in Coronado at 0.60 miles all the other small routes beyond 282 are a mile or more in length.  So the question is what criteria should be used to determine "shortest"  and am I missing any routes that may have been truncated or somehow ended up small enough to make this list?

Apparently it did appear more so as one before the ramps with I-880 were reconfigured.  I even noted back when I did a blog on CA 77 that it was limited access but not a true freeway:

TheStranger has more information the ramp reconfiguration.  I believe we talked about it on the CA 77 thread, I'm not sure why I didn't add into the blog.
