Title: State Traffic Data Viewers
Post by: webny99 on September 18, 2019, 12:42:54 PM
There are many times where traffic counts on a given roadway are relevant to discussion, or referred to, here on the forum, so I thought it would be a good idea to get a list going of the AADT/ traffic data viewing sites for each state.
Every state does it a little differently, so it will be interesting to see. Thanks to everyone's contributions, we now have an AADT/traffic data source for every state (and an interactive map for most states).

For Washington (WA):

WSDOT's Traffic Data Geoportal is an interactive map:
https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/data/tools/geoportal/?config=traffic

There's also a GIS page that allows you to download .gdb files for use in ArcMap or ArcGIS:
https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/mapsdata/geodatacatalog/Maps/noscale/DOT_TDO/TrafficGeoportal/TrafficGeoportalSourceDataIDX.htm

Québec has an online viewer with a lot of info, just make sure you're comfortable reading French.  The main viewer defaults to their version on NY's Functional Class viewer (which unfortunately the current version only includes roads maintained by the province, federal government, or under a P3; the old version, which is fortunately still online (http://transports.atlas.gouv.qc.ca/Infrastructures/InfraClassesRoutes.asp), included everything), but it has AADT as well as a lot of other items (there's also a link that defaults to the AADT data).

MoDOT has both an interactive map and pdfs. PDFs are from 2016. One nice feature with the interactive maps is that it shows direction-specific data, as opposed to combined.

EDIT: There is an archive of AADT maps going back to 2000.

WisDOT: https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/projects/data-plan/traf-counts/default.aspx (https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/projects/data-plan/traf-counts/default.aspx)
On that page is a link to a current count map, and continuous (permanent counter locations) in PDF form (2011-2014)

WisDOT (via the TOPS Lab) continuous counter data in PDF and Excel form, by county: http://transportal.cee.wisc.edu/products/hourly-traffic-data/byloctext/ (http://transportal.cee.wisc.edu/products/hourly-traffic-data/byloctext/)
The date availability varies, but is anything from 2000 thru 2019.

This map shows the locations of the traffic counters. You can click on the counter, click the "More Info" link, and it will show all historic and current data for it.
Link: https://iplan.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0a36396e6fa744ee937a5dc7afa0ebb7

This map color codes road segments based on traffic counts, and you can click on the segment for a breakdown of passenger and commercial traffic. Also includes many local roads.

I have to say, I didn't know that second map existed, and it's really cool. For what it's worth, I got the links from here, might be some other stuff of interest too, and just in case they change or add anything: https://itd.idaho.gov/road-data/

PennDOT also has county-specific traffic volume maps (https://www.penndot.gov/ProjectAndPrograms/Planning/Maps/Pages/Traffic-Volume.aspx) as well as TIRe (https://www.dot7.state.pa.us/tire), which can be used for traffic volume data, among other things.

MassDOT (https://mhd.ms2soft.com/tcds/tsearch.asp?loc=Mhd&mod=), NJDOT (https://www.njtms.org/map/), and NCDOT (http://ncdot.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=5f6fe58c1d90482ab9107ccc03026280) have interactive viewers as well.

If you're GIS inclined, the FHWA compiles annual Highway Performance Monitoring System shapefiles, which include AADT, among many other things. Link: https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/hpms/shapefiles.cfm

For Iowa, traffic data can be found in maps here: https://iowadot.gov/maps/Digital-maps/State-maps/State-map-page. If you look elsewhere in the DOT website, you can also find traffic data at a county and city level as well.

For Colorado, CDOT has a "Traffic Data Explorer"  here (http://dtdapps.coloradodot.info/otis/TrafficData).

Traffic counts are also one of many layers in " Map View"  (https://dtdapps.coloradodot.info/MapViewExt/), an ArcGIS page. There's more of that kind of data around OTIS, the umbrella site, but I think those are the main entry points for traffic counts.

Could this be listed at the top?

3. And I guess this is as good a place as any: ODOT Traffic Count Database System (TCDS) is the bomb. Much better than than what most other states offer for traffic data viewing. It has several hundred continuous counts (mostly on the interstates) that update within 48 hours, so for example yesterday's data will be viewable tomorrow, and today's data will be visible on Tuesday, etc. This is awesome for threads like the six-laning thread so you can see exactly how short-term events (like weekends/holidays) and long-term events (like the covid pandemic) affect traffic volumes rather than just guessing and making inferences. I wish NY (both NYSDOT and NYSTA) would use this system so I could pore over the data almost in real time.. imagine being able to get that data for roads you've just traveled on that quickly!

Edit: apparently NCDOT, MDOT, and possibly other states use the same platform. BRB just checking out their data from the holiday week/end!

WVDOH has revised its AADT mapviewer in recent years.  In addition to AADT, they also show the AADTT (truck traffic): https://gis.transportation.wv.gov/aadt/

Just added WV, MD, NV, and updated the link for NY. I also filled in some northeastern states to bring us up to 34 of 50 states.

The remaining states are:
AL / AK / AZ / AR / HI / KS / MS / MT / NE / NM / OK / OR / RI / SD / TN / WY

That should leave only AZ, NM, and RI.

Thanks! I added the final three. RI does not appear to have anything interactive so it's just a .pdf, but at least it's something.
Here is the final product (also found in the OP).
