Title: US 30S cutout
Post by: ClassicHasClass on October 28, 2019, 07:24:19 PM
Manage to land a US 30S cutout (arrives next week). It looks like a California-style Scotchlite 3du blank, but has 30 in Series C and a smaller S next to it. Guesses as to where it might have been posted? No distinguishing marks on the reverse.

Wyoming had 30S and 30N.  30N became mainline 30, 30S got buried by the interstate.

Saw it on eBay but I ended up going over a couple California shields and ended up getting them.  That US 30S had a really good asking price considering what it was.

30S also ran through Utah and Idaho. As far as I know, all three states used the smaller S. Does it look like a cutout version of this sign (https://www.flickr.com/photos/countylemonade/5507611355/in/album-72157626095089515/)? If it does, could be Utah - I know they used cutout shields (https://www.flickr.com/photos/countylemonade/5507624329/in/album-72157626095089515/) at one point. (Those photos aren't mine, by the way.)

I love CountyLemonade's pictures, but no, it doesn't look like that or the older Utah cutouts. As Max mentioned, this was a chance eBay find; here is the auction:

It's actually on a 3du blank, so it's rather larger. WY-UT-ID sounds possible but I know there was a 30S in OH also. (I doubt this was the NE-IA 30S since that rather quickly became 30A.) I just don't know if those states used US cutouts of this type.

The seller has a new one listed of the same thing...

It is almost certainly from Ohio.  Look at the 'US' on the US 250 shield in this aaroads photo:

It's a different sign (notice the different damage pattern). But interesting they have at least two.

That looks like a match. Good find!

Here's a retired 30s from Wyoming in Evanston.

Is that some kind of an art exhibit?

Where in Evanston is this? I've been through there multiple times and never knew this existed. Will have to make a stop at some point.

It's near the downtown square. There is a new-ish park...Vetereans Memorial(? )

Near the Hotel Evanston
