Title: Historic Highway Alignments through Castroville (CA 1, CA 156 and CA 183)

Over the past four years I've made numerous trips to Monterey which almost always takes me through Castroville at some point.  That being the case I've noticed that Castroville for a small community has a glut of historic highway alignments.  The blog below tracks the history of the Legislative Routes and Sign State Routes through Castroville from 1931 up to the present.  Interestingly a segment of Merritt Street from Salinas Street north to Preston Road has carried; CA 1, CA 156, CA 183, Legislative Route 22 and Legislative Route 56 at different points.  Included in the below blogs are numerous map scans, Department of Public Works Guides, drawn alignment maps and photo logs for the historic highway alignments in Castroville.  If you wanted to know how travel in the Artichoke Center of the World once was look no further:
