Title: Highest number of roads at an intersection
Post by: TheGrassGuy on December 10, 2019, 06:25:24 PM
Here is a 7-way intersection in Wilmington, DE.
Are there any intersections with a higher number of roads leading into it?

Kelley Square in Worcester equals it or exceeds it depending on how you count them.

Paris, France, I forget the name of the arch but I believe 12 or 13 roads come together there.

Garfield, Utah used to have a seven-way intersection  (https://www.historicaerials.com/location/40.72714370072399/-112.16237491538777/1959/18) that also served as the junction of SR 201 and 202. Both state routes have since been realigned, but you can still make out the original roads on a satellite view today (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7274024,-112.1643746,653m/data=!3m1!1e3).

That's not an image, therefore it didn't display.

Fixed it for you.

But I don't count Harrison Street as being part of that intersection, which would make it a six-way.  Six-way intersections are fairly common.

If you're referring to the traffic circle around the Arc de Triomphe (https://goo.gl/maps/7Sf3cH4xGjYPVgBZA) (which I'm almost certain you are), then it's only twelve roads.  But that's really pushing the boundaries of what should be called 'an intersection'.

Here (https://goo.gl/maps/bSfpPhS8doqRdJ9M6) is a more legitimate seven-way intersection that jakeroot posted a while ago.

This one (https://goo.gl/maps/CZE7joCXkXA8Ui23A) in Detroit (shared by ftballfan) would be an eight-way, if only one of the legs actually went somewhere.

There is the aptly-named Seven Corners near Falls Church, VA, although in its current configuration is probably doesn't qualify.  Possibly in earlier times it did.

Based on the updated link, North Harrison isn't leading into it...it's a one way out of one of the legs and not part of the signalization.

Such may be changing once this project (https://www.mass.gov/doc/november-20-2019-meeting-presentation/download) gets underway.

Arc de Triomphe. 12 Avenues come together at Place Charles de Gaulle.

^Grand Circus Park in Detroit would have had 12 Avenues coming together similar to Arc de Triomphe if Augustus Woodward's original plan for the city was completed.  Somebody on City Skylines put together a rendering of what downtown may have become:

And this is how Detroit actually turned out:

15-501 and Old Durham Road in Chapel Hill is sort of a seven-way intersection if you count the service roads:  https://goo.gl/maps/2yaTjqPqYzwVpoiq6

It's technically a three-way intersection plus two four-way intersections, but with backed-up traffic it's essentially seven-way.

City Hall Square in Philadelphia.  You have Broad, Market, 13th, 15th, and Filbert Streets all figuring into the intersection.

Eh, that's just separated T-junctions at traffic lights or stop signs.  Nothing more than multiple 3 way intersections.

Chicago has a few 3 road intersections, most famous is the 6 Corners (Milwaukee, Cicero, and Irving Park).

Des Plaines has a 4 road intersection currently under construction (Lee, River, Rand, and Hills) https://www.google.com/maps/place/Six+Corners,+Chicago,+IL+60641/@42.0473768,-87.885937,17.96z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x880fcc461a2bbb5b:0x979144b6d25a9278!8m2!3d41.9530873!4d-87.7472808 (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Six+Corners,+Chicago,+IL+60641/@42.0473768,-87.885937,17.96z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x880fcc461a2bbb5b:0x979144b6d25a9278!8m2!3d41.9530873!4d-87.7472808)

There's also an 8 way roundabout (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8272215,-87.8514788,3a,42.5y,5.82h,80.19t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sXJ0Ui5y3jeMAVfdvjDPAmw!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo1.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DXJ0Ui5y3jeMAVfdvjDPAmw%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dsearch.revgeo_and_fetch.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D96%26h%3D64%26yaw%3D80.39069%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en) in Brookfield, IL.  I'd consider it four roads.

It depends on how you define intersection. Do traffic circles count as one intersection or a series of intersections in a circle? Washington DC has oodles of intersections if you include traffic circles like Place Charles de Gaulle in Paris. DuPont Circle had ten roads leading into it until Connecticut Avenue was tunneled under it (although CT AV still has roads that meet DuPont Circle so it's still technically ten).  Eight roads is fairly common; Thomas Circle, Logan Circle. Multiple roads coming together at a point is less common, but happens. The auto has meant many multiple-road intersections have been redesigned due to increased traffic speeds.

If you count circles or ovals, Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn has something like ten roads entering or exiting the outer circulation.

I'm not so sure I'd count that one. Hills is essentially a right-in-right-out on River only, and not really a part of the intersection. Also, I've always considered Lee merging into River separate from the intersection with Rand.
