Title: Longest string of consecutive *state-level highway* exits?
Post by: DJ Particle on December 16, 2019, 04:53:40 AM
Just state highways, no local control, US, or Interstate highways.  Let's find the longest chain!

Massachusetts has some impressive ones...

US-6 (5 exits)

9 (78): MA-134
10 (82):  MA-124
11 (85):  MA-137
12 (89):  MA-6A
13A (91A):  MA-6A/28 (though YMMV whether this still counts as an exit.  It used to be signed "Exit 13S" until the mid-1980s)

But wait, here comes MA-3 with a chain of 6!

9 (18):  MA-3A
10 (20):  MA-3A/53
11 (22):  MA-14
12 (27):  MA-139
13 (32):  MA-53/123
14 (35):  MA-228
(If Derby St was still MA-228 Southbound, the chain would be 8)

Can anyone think of longer strings?  I know Long Island has a ton of state highways, for example.  I just listed the ones off the top of my head.

A couple from Indiana.

I-69 with a chain of 6:
214: SR 13
218: SR 38
222: SR 9/67
226: SR 9/109
234: SR 32/67
241: SR 332

If it weren't for a recent decommissioning at Exit 210 (former SR 238) this could have been a chain of 8 exits in a row.

I-65 with a chain of 7:
146: SR 47
158: SR 28
168: SR 38
172: SR 26
175: SR 25
178: SR 45
188: SR 18

Another 6 or 7:

I-93

48: MA 213
1: NH 38
2: NH 97
3: NH 111
4: NH 102
5: NH 28
Unnumbered: NH 101 (it's also I-293)

I-95 in Florida:

Exit 25: SR 84
Exit 23: SR 818
Exit 22: SR 848
Exit 21: SR 822
Exit 20: SR 820
Exit 19: SR 824
Exit 18: SR 858

This is going to be easier in the SR-heavy states.

Could theoretically include Exit 26, with SR 736 and I-595 (736 is not a hidden designation, part of another exit ramp), and then collect SRs 842, 838, and 816 by going north from there.

If US/state combinations don't disqualify:

I-91:

19: MA 9
20: MA 9, MA 10
21: MA 10
22: MA 10
23: MA 10
24: MA 10
25: MA 116
26: MA 2, MA 2A
27: MA 2

3: VT 9

I-64 Virginia has 9:

1.  VA 33-249
2.  VA 106
3.  VA 155
4.  VA 33
5.  VA 30
6.  VA 30
7.  VA 199
8.  VA 143
9.  VA 199

It used to be 14 until they built the connector to Busch Gardens with a direct interchange with I-64

10.  VA 143
11.  VA 143/238
12.  VA 105
13.  VA 143

I was curious about the bolded phrase, so I looked up one of your examples (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6959338,-70.1594126,3a,43.6y,80.09h,84.6t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sp12XCNlVGOHJnO47r06QhA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1). Apparently, "no local control" does NOT mean what I thought it meant.  :hmmm:

I-84 in CT

Exit 67: CT 31
Exit 68: CT 195
Exit 69: CT 74
Exit 70: CT 32
Exit 71: CT 320
Exit 72: CT 89
Exit 73: CT 190
Exit 74: CT 171

If you include SR's (SR 533 for Exit 66), you could also add Exits 63-66 (63-65 have combos of CT 30/83)

Does the exit have to only feature a state route, or can it share with another route of a different class?
Would Missouri supplemental highways count as state highways in this case?

I-490 has eight straight, over the course of 20 miles, starting with the western terminus.
Exits 1 - 8:
NY 19 / NY 33/33A / NY 36/ NY 259 / NY 386 / NY 204 / NY 33 / NY 531

As long as we can skip over the joke that is I-790, the NYS Thruway has nine straight between Syracuse and Albany.
Exits 34 - 27:
NY 13 / NY 365 / NY 233 / NY 8/12 / NY 28 / NY 169 / NY 10 /NY 30A / NY 30

I thought I could get something going with I-86/NY 17, but I couldn't find any 7+ strings. The strings get broken up by either county routes, or exits with no route whatsoever, such as Schoolhouse Road, Lounsberry, Oquaga Lake, etc.
I-81 is riddled with US 11 interchanges for its entire length in NY, so that's out. And I-390 doesn't have any 5+ strings, unless we can count "TO NY 415", in which case we can get up to seven.

The longest I can think of in MN is 4:
180: MN 23 Mora exit, south end of duplex
183: MN 48
191: MN 23 Sandstone exit, north end of duplex
195: MN 23 Askov exit

I'm not sure based on the criteria if these count because of the adjoining county road connections to most of these, figured maybe since the state route is the primary route.

255: Route 88

201: PA 438
202: PA 107
206: PA 374
211*: PA 106
211*: PA 92
217: PA 547
219: PA 848
223: PA 492
230: PA 171

*pair of partial interchanges that complement each other

It helps that PennDOT (under the old name) specifically designated a lot of state highways along roads that interchanged with new Interstates.

Exit 116: KY 281
Exit 114: KY 70
Exit 111: KY 2171
Exit 108: KY 813
Exits 106B-A: Western KY/Pennyrile Parkways

Longest in my area is three.

For I-75
Exit 151 is M-81
Exit 153 is M-13
I-675 exit 150  gets in the way of having a third state highway M-46 at exit 149.

This is three exits in a row
Exit 160 is M-84
Exit 162 is M-25 with US-10 coming in from another direction so this should count.
Exit 164 is M-13 connector which is considered a state highway even though it's a connector to that state highway.

Garden State Parkway:
Exit 98 is NJ 34 and NJ 138
Exit 100A is NJ 33

If they are maintained by a State Agency, I'd say yes

Biggest exception immediately coming to mind would be the US Park Service-maintained section of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway

Summerlin Parkway in Vegas was Locally Controlled, but I believe NDOT recently took over the Parkway

The KY Parkways are maintained by KYTC

I don't know enough about the NY Parkways to know if they are State or Locally maintained

Maryland/Delaware:
I-70 (7):
MD 144 [56]
MD 144 [59]
MD 75
MD 27
MD 97
MD 32

I-95(12):

MD 543
MD 22
MD 155
MD 222
MD 272
MD 279
DE 896
DE 273
DE 1/7/58

I wish I could include DE 141 but it has the same exit number (5 A,B,C) as I-295.

The I-95 string could be broken when the new interchange is added between MD 222 and MD 272.  Though the interchange may be assigned an unsigned state route.  See Montrose Road interchange on I-270.  So maybe it will become 13 in a row. Assuming unsigned routes are ok.

To answer some questions:

"No local control" means no routes that aren't in the logs as state highways.
ONLY state highways...if there's a concurrency with an Interstate or US Highway, it doesn't count.  😊

The split itself isn't a numbered exit, only the exits for DE 141.  On some mapping and GPS devices it'll claim I-295 is Exit 5, but it's not.  (You especially see this on 295 South approaching 295 - some motorists will get in the exit lane for Exit 5 (141) then quickly merge back over at the last second realizing it's not correct. MapQuest was a frequent violator of this.)

To further that point that the 95/295 split isn't numbered, the 95/495 split isn't numbered either, and the exit for DE 4 is Exit 6.

AFAIK the I-295 exit being unnumbered is still mostly the case.  But I did find one place where exit 5C is signed on I-95 south.  It looks like that is a recent sign replacement.
https://goo.gl/maps/nQALcCyiK1dikPML7

So I'm surprised with the interchange work being done for DE 141 that there is not new signage on NB I-95 to sign I-295 as exit 5C.  I guess it's because not all of the exit signage for I-295 was replaced as part of this project.

Utah’s big winner looks to be I-15 in Davis and Weber County, with 9 or 10 in a row depending on how you count it:

(324 - SR 67/Legacy Parkway)
325 - SR 225/Park Lane
328 - SR 273/200 North
330 - SR 126/Layton Parkway
331 - SR 232/Hill Field Rd
332 - SR 108/Antelope Drive
334 - SR 193
335 - SR 103/650 North
338 - SR 97/5600 South
339 - SR 26/Riverdale Road

The reason 324 is in question is because the northbound exit with the same number is US 89 and occurs within the same interchange complex, but the Legacy junction is clearly north of the 89 junction. Also worth noting that UDOT plans to build an interchange at 1800 North in Sunset, which would likely involve an extension of SR 37 to bring the consecutive interchange count to 10/11.

There’s a chain of 15 exits on I-15 in Utah and Salt Lake Counties that are all non-interstate state routes, but it doesn’t seem to count for this thread because of the US 89 concurrency in the middle.

I'm surprised for Louisiana that the highest string I can find is 9. It's a very heavy SR state. But a fair amount of US highway interchanges that interrupted chains.

Exit 121 - LA 3177
Exit 127 - LA 975
Exit 135 - LA 3000
Exit 139 - LA 77
Exit 151- LA 415
Exit 153- LA 1
Exit 155- LA 30

I-55
Exit 32- LA 3234
Exit 36- LA 442
Exit 40- LA 40
Exit 46- LA 16
Exit 50 - LA 1048
Exit 53- LA 10
Exit 57- LA 440
Exit 61- LA 38
Exit 1- MS 584

I'm going to take a stab at Texas next. There's good potential there.

Exit 54- AR 51
Exit 63- AR 53
Exit 69- AR 26
Exit 73- AR 8/AR 51

If we are counting lettered routes in Missouri on the same tier as numbered state routes, I would think Missouri would be up there.  After checking a few I'm so sure.

I-44
* Route AH (Exit 242)
* MO 47
* MO 30 /Route WW/Route AB
* Route JJ/Route W
* MO 185 (Exit 226)
* MO 185/Route D (Exit 225)
* Route N/Route C/Route J
* Route H
* Route UU
* MO 19
* Route F
* MO 8/MO 68
* Route V

Also for I-44:
* MO 17
* MO 7 Route P
* MO 133/Route AB
* Route T
* Route F

I-55
* Route TT (Exit 165)
* Route DD/Route OO (Exit 162)
* Route Y
* Route O
* MO 32/Route A/Route B
* Route M/Route N/Route J
* Route Z
* Route M
* MO 51
* Route B
* Route KK
* Route E

How are Virginia's secondary routes and West Virginia's county routes classified for purposes of this exercise? They're state-maintained, but with a different signage system than the primary state routes.

I would say that since those WV routes are state funded, have no local control (except for city streets) and state maintained that they have to be included. It's kind of a strange case as compared to other states. Are there any property tax-funded road levies at the local level in WV at all?

Exit 145 - NC 4 / NC 48
Exit 150 - NC 33
Exit 154 - NC 481
Exit 160 - NC 561

Just state highways, no local control, US, or Interstate highways.  Let's find the longest chain!

:hmmm:

Would be interested in some clarification on this.

"No local control" means no routes that aren't in the logs as state highways.

OK, gotcha. I was thinking about "local control" as being the destinations mentioned on signage, like W. Harwich and Dennis Port in your example. Therefore, my original thought was that we were limited to exits like this (https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1462691,-77.7172519,3a,20.3y,11.94h,96.17t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sGR_-pqxAQF4cZvUdxiEJiQ!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo0.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DGR_-pqxAQF4cZvUdxiEJiQ%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D89.344185%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656!5m1!1e1) - state route shields only!

If we count Puerto Rico as a state equivalent, you can get a very, very long string. For instance, assuming the Wikipedia exit list for PR 52 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico_Highway_52) is correct, there appears to be a string of about 20 consecutive exits to territorial numbered highways. (They use four different styles of shields, but all of them are part of the same island-wide numbering system.)

I found a chain of six exits on I-85 in Georgia over the most northern twenty five miles:

154: SR 63
160: SR 51
164: SR 320
166: SR 106 / SR 145
173: SR 17
177: SR 77

- - 179: GA / SC state line - -

Continuing north into South Carolina, the chain continues for an additional five exits (possibly only two).

1: SC 11
2: SC 59
*4: To SC 243*
11: SC 24 / To SC 243
14: SC 187

In Nebraska, all the cities and villages next to I-80 get a Connecting Link highway to I-80. This, plus some with a number, plus the fact US 385 doesn't get an exit, means there are 13 in a row going eastbound on I-80 from the Wyoming border.

Exit 1 L-53B to Pine Bluffs, WY
Exit 8 L-53C Bushnell
Exit 20 NE 71 South Kimball
Exit 22 NE 71 North
Exit 29 L-53A Dix
Exit 38 L-17B Potter
Exit 48 L-17C
Exit 55 NE 19 Sidney
Exit 59 L-17J Sidney
Exit 69 L-17E Sunol
Exit 76 L-17F Lodgepole
Exit 85 L-25A Chappell
Exit 95 NE 27 Julesburg, CO

I-275 in Kentucky has four:

Exit 82 KY 1303 (known as Turkeyfoot Rd)
Exit 80 KY 17
Exit 79 KY 16
Exit 77 KY 9

If one were to include state route numbers not signed from the interstate, then Exit 76 for KY 2238, 3 Mile Road also counts for eastbound 275.

NY's winner is probably I-88 with 10. A whopping 3 exits are not signed for parallel NY 7 or another state route and only one of those has a US route. Central New York (like much of the state) is also generally devoid of US routes.

Exit 6: NY 79
Exit 7: NY 41
Exit 8: NY 206
Exit 9: NY 8
Exit 10: NY 7
Exit 11: NY 357
Exit 12: NY 7
Exit 13: NY 205
Exit 14 (NB only): NY 28 south
Exit 15: NY 23/NY 28 south

If Exit 5 was signed for NY 7, there would be a continuous string from 1 to 15. If 5, 16, and 18 were signed for NY 7 (only 4 of the 12 NY 7 exits are directly to 7, most connect via unsigned state routes or county routes), there would be a string from 1 to 23 (24 is US 20/NY 7).
