Title: Google really needs to update a lot of its street view imagery.
Post by: Roadgeekteen on May 19, 2020, 11:41:42 PM
Not just minor roads, but major roads like US 50 in Nevada have years old imagery. Also Northern NH/Vermont is really poorly covered.

QuoteAlso Northern NH/Vermont is really poorly covered.

As with most things, your mileage may vary.  My town's pretty well covered, as are two of the adjacent towns.

As for why they don't update more often, consider the cost of driving around, collecting the data, analyzing the data, and quality control before posting it to the intrawebz...

US 3 haven't been update in a while north of I-93, and that's quite a major road for the region. It is hit or miss.

Isn't there a massive long standing thread about how much Google Maps "sucks?"

That was more about the maps update, not sure how much streetview is discussed in there.

Safe to say it hasn't changed much in the past 15 years...

I know, but the imagery is blurry and it's almost impossible to see the signs. Was trying to find out what the speed limit is up there.

Mostly 50 outside the villages.

Also sometimes google uploads imagery that's new but really bad, forcing you to go back to old imagery. Those cams on cars sometimes used look fine, but the speed you can scroll seems to be very slow on them.

I'm eagerly waiting for them to upload new streetview imagery from Germany.

Probably not going to happen because of Germany's privacy laws.

Your time would be better spent contacting Google rather than creating another thread.

It's already been resolved.

The same could be said in Quebec for not only its streetview but also satellite images.

Image of Sherbrooke taken around 2015 https://www.google.com/maps/@45.3913258,-71.9889021,6294m/data=!3m1!1e3  but strangely they updated the area of Rivière-du-Loup more sooner showing some clearing ROW for A-85 https://www.google.com/maps/@47.7558109,-69.4019388,6025m/data=!3m1!1e3  and more fun to compare Google satellite imagine with another satellite imagery. https://satellites.pro/Canada_map#45.383577,-71.982465,14

Now if Bing maps could cover Canada with Streetside but that's for another thread. ;)

I thought it was French - an expression of desire for Canada to be afflicted with the Bing product.  :)

You don't know until you try.

Complaining to the people who are not working for Google isn't going to accomplish anything.

Actually, it's probably more useful to complain publicly because that makes Google look bad. Google doesn't give a shit what you think. You're not their customer. You're the product. The companies that they sell data about you to and that they sell ad space to are the customer.

If you complain to Google, they can safely delete your email and nobody's the wiser. If you complain publicly, you might make someone else realize "Hey, yeah, this sucks." and then they complain publicly too. With enough negative sentiment, you make Google look like a worse investment to those companies and not worth the money. Google does notice that.

Nantucket's coverage is from September 2008 and was taken the day Hurricane Kyle passed to the east of the island, spreading its overcast that way.

There is some new 2019 imagery.

That's a long game to play, and not a predictable one. Don't fix the pothole, maybe a sinkhole will swallow up the entire road, and then the pothole isn't the problem anymore?

There's tens of thousands of roads which have no Street View, and they probably have no clue what's missing...tell 'em Bing has it, and maybe they'll do something. They let many of us edit and suggest corrections to Google Maps, so why not ask?

However, the drivers get credit for their work by scanning as much as possible, so that means running up usable mileage in places that is easy to scan and acquire images - so that might mean "corn rowing" neighborhoods with easier-to-drive places than a highway with limited access points that gets congested. That's why you'll sometimes see planned neighborhoods with no housing get scanned for GSV but the 5-mile dead end route to a river gets ignored.

Well, email Google yourself then, and see what sort of response you get. If it's anything other than an automatically generated email I'll be shocked.

I was about to say it's about time for Mr. Google to ship its car to Hawaii again, because the most recent imagery I knew was from August 2011. But I've dropped the pegman in Honolulu, and surprise, there's June 2019 imagery now! However I cannot say the same for Alaska, still stuck in 2011...

My point is that asking members of the forum to do something that we have little to no control of is wasting everyone's time. After all, they don't take requests. It's their ball, and they can go home with it as they please. A fifteen-second search yields the answer:
