Title: Most lightly traveled interstate in your state

For Massachusetts, it's probably I-91 north of Northampton or maybe I-190.

My bet is on I-155, 9.1k vehicles per day near the MO-TN border.

Always wondered why that was built. Doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

In Arkansas it has to be the new I-49 in Texarkana north of I-30. Right now it's kind of a road to nowhere as it ends at US 59/71.

I thought it might be a road closure, but I'm not seeing anything on Google that would indicate that.

Provides another crossing of the Mississippi River -- there's no other crossing between Cairo IL and Memphis, except a ferry.

Also connects I-55 to the future I-69 corridor, which seemed to have a fair amount of traffic every time I drove it even though it's not yet an Interstate.

Based on 2016 data, Utah's least-traveled interstate is I-70 between exit 99 (Millers Canyon) and 108 (Lone Tree). AADT on that segment is only 3800.

There are a few stations on I-80 between US 93 at Wells and the Utah border that report AADT of 5100-5200.

Traveling west to east, AADT on I-80 drops below 10,000 at Fernley and stays that way, except for in the immediate vicinity of towns, for its remaining ~350 miles across Nevada.

In Louisiana the lowest AADT I found was around 15,000 on I-49 just south of the US 84/Mansfield exit.

For PA, it looks like the least traveled segment of interstate is I-476/PA Turnpike Northeast Extension between the Wyoming Valley and Clarks Summit interchanges with an AADT of 7500.  Completely opposite conditions from I-476's southern reaches as the Blue Route where AADT exceeds 130000!

Also note that I-86 in Erie County PA has an AADT of 9000.

For years I always figured that I-64 in Southern Indiana was the lightest traveled, especially west of Evansville. But I-69 from Oakland City (Exit 34) to SR 445 (Exit 110) is all below 10,000 on the most recent AADT.

Well, I-91 north of Sunderland, anyway.

I wonder about I-90 in far western MA, too.

In SC, the toll portion of I-185 hardly sees any traffic at all, even during pre-pandemic rush hours.

I-520 around North Augusta, SC is pretty lightly travelled as well.  Most of the traffic is on the GA side west of US 25.

For Virginia, I-64 west of I-81 gets down to 9,000 AADT. There's no other interstate in the state, including 3dis, that gets that low to my knowledge.

For the most part, thru volumes are usually about 9,000 - 11,000 AADT, reaching up to 20,000 AADT between Clifton Forge and Covington.

I-59 between the Alabama state line and the first exit in Georgia is the lowest in the state at 14,100 AADT as of 2018. The lowest you'll find on anything other than I-59 is right around 20,000 (at the north end of I-185 and along I-16 near Soperton).

Are we talking 2di's only, or could it also be a 3di?

For New York, I think we had established at one point in another thread that it would be I-88, if you're looking at the entire length of the interstate. If you're looking for just a small segment, then I thought I remembered I-87 in the Adirondacks as the winner, but based on a quick check, I-86 in the Southern Tier appears to have a slight edge. It's sustained below 6K per day between Angelica and Almond, while nothing on I-87 falls below that.

For North Carolina, it would be I-73 / I-74 north of Rockingham, the lowest point being around 8,500 AADT.

CalTrans publishes the traffic counts. I might have guessed I-505, but the 2017 count shows around 12K AADT near the split and junction with I-5 or portions of I-8 which shows a bit less than 8K AADT roughly at the San Diego-Imperial County line.

I was looking at those same tables and some of the Caltrans reports have "left align/right align" splits.  Not sure exactly what that terminology means but going by context it looks like I-8 in that vicinity is actually 2 x 8K = 16K.  I think Max R. is right about I-505, whose 11,200 at the lowest edges out I-40's low of 11,700.

I went through the 2018 data and averaged out all of the "ahead_aadt" data of all of the segments for each interstate and found that over all of its segments, I-40 has the lowest average AADT per segment.

I am not 100% sure how to interpret the data, so please do let me know if I took the wrong approach.

Ozarkman already mentioned 155, which is definitely 3di. For 2di it is probably I-49 between Carthage and Harrisonville (according to https://www.modot.org/traffic-volume-maps), but I-35 north of Cameron has some very light numbers as well.

Delaware only has three interstates, so it's not really "lightly-traveled", but the one with the lowest AADT is I-495 with a minimum of 25091.

In Colorado, it's I-76 northeast of Sterling to the Nebraska line. CDOT reports just southwest of Julesburg an AADT of 7800.

After that, I was surprised to see I-70 at the Utah line has an 8300 AADT.

Depending on traffic and where you are in Denver, the quickest way from Denver to SLC is I-70 west into Utah and then US 6 through Price to I-15.

Taking I-25 north to CO-14 to US-287 up to I-80 west is quicker and shorter. Taking the route you are talking about is a little further and takes a little longer.

Google maps disagrees, but as I said, off topic for this thread.  Either way, I-70, a major trucking thoroughfare having nearly the same traffic as rural I-76 is still surprising.

Ozarkman already mentioned 155, which is definitely 3di. For 2di it is probably I-49 between Carthage and Harrisonville (according to https://www.modot.org/traffic-volume-maps), but I-35 north of Cameron has some very light numbers as well.

Well most people who actually travel I-49 in the Joplin/Carthage area actually turn off of it on (or just stay on it for northbound I-49) MO-171/249 as it's a better TOTSO than the crappy cloverleaves that I-49 has with I-44.  Only those heading to I-44 east on southbound I-49 and vice versa actually use that stretch other than local traffic.  If they'd ever actually do a proper Interstate to Interstate interchange on Exit 53, I could see MoDOT moving I-49 over to it as it's quicker for anything other than the aforementioned movements.

As a singular route I would imagine I-505 is the big winner in California.

I would imagine I-780 in California too given that these interstates are not as jammed as I-80 though.

I-82 in Oregon would be my guess for the Beaver State if the whole route is to be counted.  There just is not that many miles on it with there being alternate routes to connect with the bridge at the border from both eastbound and westbound traffic, which makes Oregon's section of I-82 rather redundant.

Overall 780 appears to be the third-least-travelled with an average of 58K aadt per segment versus 21K for 505 and 16K for 40

In Colorado, it's I-76 northeast of Sterling to the Nebraska line. CDOT reports just southwest of Julesburg an AADT of 7800.

After that, I was surprised to see I-70 at the Utah line has an 8300 AADT.
Probably mostly Denver-Salt Lake City/Las Vegas/LA travel.
How does SLC come into the picture on I-70 at the Utah-Colorado state line?

Depending on traffic and where you are in Denver, the quickest way from Denver to SLC is I-70 west into Utah and then US 6 through Price to I-15.

Chris
Taking I-25 north to CO-14 to US-287 up to I-80 west is quicker and shorter. Taking the route you are talking about is a little further and takes a little longer.

What if you live in Arvada? Lakewood? Golden?  All places in the metro area where that would not be true. (Getting off topic for this thread though.)

As somebody who has made the Denver-Salt Lake drive multiple times, depending on your exact O/D within the Denver and Salt Lake areas, it's generally more or less the same time between the two cities with a slight edge to I-80. But even if 80 is faster, there are plenty of reasons to take 70 instead. For one, the I-70 route is much more fun as a driver, since it takes you through all kinds of cool Rocky Mountain terrain like Glenwood Canyon. I-80 through Wyoming is relatively flat and uninspiring, and it gets old after about 15 minutes - especially if you've gone that way multiple times before.

Also, believe it or not, I-70 is a more reliable route in winter despite its higher elevation. Sure, you're fighting skiers and mountain pass traffic, but because of the relatively flat profile of I-80 across Wyoming, it tends to experience all sorts of blizzards that will shut down the highway entirely. I-70 probably gets more snow, but in my experience it rarely closes completely. So while sitting in ski traffic on 70 sucks, I'd take that any day over spending the night in Rawlins or something because a blizzard closed I-80.

For Maryland it looks like it would be I-68 near the MD/WV border - between MD 42 and US 219, AADT of 13,260

For grins, I also looked up the highest - I-270 just north of its split before I-495 - an AADT of 265,633

Neither of which were surprising.

Edit:  Corrected fumble-fingered typing - of course 496 should be 495

Interesting question!  Based on an earlier post in this thread (quoted below), I think Delaware could be a contender.  Wonder if DC could be considered a "state" for this question?

Delaware only has three interstates, so it's not really "lightly-traveled", but the one with the lowest AADT is I-495 with a minimum of 25091.

Outside of 180 there are a lot of stretches in the 10 to 15000 a day range in Illinois.
Though I'm the current low volume era there has been actual congestion on 180 due to bridge repair. I never thought there would be a day when the only red spot was on 180.
15000 seems like the low volume range . Most of western 88  and 74 and most of eastern 64 and southern 57. Also most of 155 and 72. Parts of 64 and 72 go below 10000. Be interested to see how many Interstates are in the low volume range.

I compiled all of this info back in 2013, so some I'm sure is outdated, but here is (was) the lowest per state.  The number after the @ is the median mileage number between the two measured endpoints.

AL: I-59 @ Mile 240
AK: I-A2 @ 145
AR: I-40 @ 0
AZ: I-8 @ 142
CA: I-505 @ 30
CO: I-76 @ 168
CT: I-291 @ 6
DC: I-695 @ 1
DE: I-495 @ 0
FL: I-10 @ 295
GA: I-59 @ 0
HI: I-H3 @ 13
ID: I-15 @ 181
IL: I-180 @ 10
IN: I-469 @ 15 (I-69 might be lower)
IA: I-880 @ 11
KS: I-335 @ 137
KY: I-69 @ 76
LA: I-55 @ 62
ME: I-95 @ 300
MD: I-68 @ 0
MA: I-90 @ 0
MI: I-75 @ 375
MN: I-90 @ 213
MS: I-59 @ 126
MO: I-229 @ 6
MT: I-15 @ 396
NE: I-76 @ 0
NV: I-80 @ 404
NH: I-93 @ 116
NJ: I-295 @ 2
NM: I-25 @ 453
NY: I-81 @ 180
NC: I-795 @ 7
ND: I-29 @ 217
OH: I-480 @ 41
OK: I-44 @ 0
OR: I-84 @ 359
PA: I-476 @ 124
PR: I-PR3 @ 19
RI: I-295 @ 22
SC: I-185 @ 12
SD: I-29 @ 227
TN: I-26 @ 24
TX: I-10 @ 364
UT: I-70 @ 104
VT: I-89 @ 130
VA: I-64 @ 57
WA: I-82 @ 0
WV: I-64 @ 177
WI: I-39 @ 110
WY: I-90 @ 59

It would be interesting to see how many of these have changed due to population shifts and whatnot.  There were a couple of close seconds.
