Title: Does I-229 still turn into a dirt road?
Post by: bugo on April 20, 2010, 01:21:54 AM
About 10 years ago I-229 in South Dakota turned into a dirt road just north of its interchange with I-90.  I was in Sioux Falls last year but didn't have time to check it out. Is that road paved now?

Looking at Google Street View...

Here's the north portion of the I-229/I-90 interchange:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Sioux+Falls&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.136668,56.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Sioux+Falls,+Minnehaha,+South+Dakota&ll=43.607746,-96.690593&spn=0.002074,0.003449&t=k&z=18&layer=c&cbll=43.607657,-96.69059&panoid=QaqGIAJUO70YJy5PrOq5lA&cbp=12,19.87,,0,22.08

A few thousand feet north, the road (476th Avenue) is clearly now paved:

The pavement ends at Theresa Circle in the town of Renner:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Sioux+Falls&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.136668,56.513672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Sioux+Falls,+Minnehaha,+South+Dakota&ll=43.652395,-96.691446&spn=0.008353,0.013797&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.652537,-96.691437&panoid=YfMH_dzEJxX0gBwmLtmtcA&cbp=12,11.99,,0,20.12

The pavement along 476th runs about 3.1 miles north from the end of 229 now.

I drove it in Dec '07 and it looked like it petered out to dirt after a few hundred feet.

Looking southbound - the lights in the distance are the 229/90 junction.

maybe it was just plowed so poorly that I thought it was dirt at night in the snow?
