Title: California SR 27 (Topanga Canyon Blvd.)
Post by: M3100 on July 04, 2020, 01:06:39 AM
I explored this route today; it extends south from California SR 118 (Ronald Reagan Freeway) to SR 1 (Pacific Coast Highway).
My 1978 Gousha atlas has the road named 'Santa Susana Ave'. from SR 118 to Devonshire.  And, the SR 118 Freeway only extended as far east as DeSoto on that map.

This shows SR 118 East, with the sign alerting to the SR 27 exit.

This was the only southbound shield I saw, at Ventura Blvd. just beyond US 101.

Same location, northbound SR 27.

The section south from US 101 to SR 1 is definitely more scenic, and semi-rural in parts.  On the 'coastal' side, there is a creek that runs parallel to the highway; this house uses a decommissioned boxcar as a bridge/entryway to their property.

The south end of SR 27 at SR 1, Pacific Coast Highway.  This actually does have an 'end' designation sign.

That first picture for the upcoming Topanga Canyon Blvd exit is the original one from when the DeSoto Avenue extension first opened.  The portion covered up by "Topanga Canyon Blvd" did originally say Santa Susana Ave as your map noted.  There was another covered Santa Susana Avenue sign at the Kuehner Dr exit in Simi Valley that said "Topanga Canyon Blvd" as well with no CA 27 shield on the sign.  Been years though since that sign was replaced

There was another {snip} sign {snip} in Simi Valley that said "Topanga Canyon Blvd" as well with no CA 27 shield on the sign.

Thanks for the info.  While heading back yesterday afternoon on CA SR 118 East, there was an 'advance sign' (whatever you call the signs in the center median that list the three upcoming exits) that did not have a CA 27 shield; the signs closer to the offramp did have the shield.

Took a ride on CA 27 myself last year:

Topanga Canyon has it's moments, but sometimes the traffic is brutal on weekends:

Nice pictures! I especially like the boxcar being used as a bridge.

By the way, these are called "Interchange Sequence Signs".
