Title: Shortest Interstate With a Child
Post by: ethanhopkin14 on August 03, 2020, 09:11:22 AM
Exactly that.  What is the shortest interstate highway with a child?  In a real quick search I have Interstate 89.  Of course I am not taking into account hidden interstates.

I believe I-83 is the winner, at 85 miles with one child (I-283 in Harrisburg).

While it wouldn't be its final form, the sham I-87 in NC could temporarily become the shortest with a child, depending on the length of I-87 at the time the planned I-587 spur is designated.

Maybe that's another criteria I should have laid out.  Interstates that are currently signed but are not in it's final form are excluded, so I-169 in Texas coming off I-69E would not be in the running.

No love for I-66 (76.38 miles) and I-366? :bigass:

Well maybe it's me, but I'd consider I-69E to really be a small portion of I-69, so the entire length of I-69 would count.  Without that, then we'd have to argue about which auxiliary routes belong to which legs of I-35.

Oh I did get it (hence calling it the chosen one).  Low post count, but long-time lurker

At one point I-97 was to have a couple 3dis of its own. Had them came through, I-97 would be the winner (it is way shorter than I-83).

I-270 (35 miles) has I-370 near Gaithersburg.

Both are apart of the I-70 system, but I-370 only branches off from I-270, not I-70.

As a runner up, I-695 (51 miles) has I-795 near Pikesville.

H-1 in Honolulu at 27 miles has H-201...

I-279 (13 miles) has I-579 in Pittsburgh.

This beats I-83, in my opinion anyway. I-H1 is a legit Interstate.

If that counts, then all the I-X78 interstates in New York City count since they are all orphaned from I-78 they are essentially spurs of themselves.

But seriously, I think you have a legitimate situation here since it is a spur of former I-70S.

One more rule, I-238 doesn't count having a parent of zero miles.

FYI, that's not really what I meant.  I am not one of the group that considers the remaining suffixed interstates to be separate interstates either.  I just meant that leg of I-69 in it's current short form wouldn't count since it is part of a bigger interstate.  I-635 in Dallas is a spur of I-35 not I-35E, and they are both (I-35E and I-35W) equally part of I-35.

On the flip side, I think that I-57 is the longest one without a child. I-25 might be the longest with only one child. What is the shortest interstate with multiple children?

I was about to ask what was the longest interstate with one child and I thought it was I-25 (lonely I-225 in Colorado) without running any numbers.  I think the completed version of I-49 will be the longest interstate with no children.

Once I-49 is completed, it will take that title away from I-57 (though completed sections of 49, when combined, are longer that I-57). Regarding your last question, I would guess it would be somewhere on the east coast.. I-78 maybe?

I-H1, I-H2, I-H3 are the parent Interstates in Hawaii and they are short by Mainland standards

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_H-201
The child interstate in Hawaii is I-H201 which is 4 miles long.

I consider I-238 to have a parent of null length, which isn't the same as zero :sombrero:.

What we really need is I-666 to go from Washington, DC to Hell, MI.  It can follow I-70 through Breezewood.

Oh, sorry, this ain't Fictional Highways.  I should go to Hell.
