Try it, I got 25 out of 26.
I gave it a shot, also 25 of 26. Stumbled on "U".

U is very hard unless you live near LA. I also missed U.
23 out of 26. Missed U, X, and Z.
That was fun! I got 100%, but I cheated a little bit.
I had to think about G for a minute, and I used Google Maps for Q, U, and Z. (For U, I just panned to the LA area, typed in "U" and got it :))
T was weird. I stupidly forgot about the actual answer and typed a Phoenix suburb instead (omitting the names so I don't spoil it for anyone).
I didn't have any trouble with X. I knew it immediately when I saw the location, but then again I've been to that area.
24/26, missed U and Z.
i got all 26. U was not difficult for me since I live in SO Cal
Got all of them as well. That SoCal suburb starting with U almost got me. For a foreigner those starting with Q, X, Y and Z should also be quite hard without a map, but I knew all of them. That said, being a Sporcle quiz I wonder why the answer for K wasn't Kyrgyzstan :sombrero:.
Also, I consider the E answer to start with P instead (since in Spanish we usually disregard articles when sorting alphabetically) and thus the actual E answer to be in Oregon instead (unless I'm missing something).
I didn't know U, and I blanked on G (swapping names in N and S Carolina). Once in a while I forgot what letter I was on, tried a wrong city, and wondered why it wasn't advancing.
24/26
Missed U (which I never would have gotten) and Z (which I may have gotten if I had more patience)
That was fun! I had to stop myself from overthinking a couple of times. Almost went with Newark instead of New York...
24/26, got stumped on the U and Z, though cheated before time was up to get Z. Even cheating I still couldn't get U.
I was at 18 before I realized that the map was showing the location of the cities. :banghead: Ended up with not enough time to think about U and Q, wouldn't have gotten X or Z.
It's a bit outdated, since Phoenix passed Philadelphia a couple of years ago.
Got all 26 without cheating
I got all 26!

I tried it without looking and also got 18. Likely would have gotten all except U if I had been looking.
25/26, missed U like everyone else
I didn't realize the map showed where the cities were at first. I also have been watching a lot of hockey lately so I naturally typed Calgary and Edmonton forgetting that this was US only, yet somehow didn't think Chicago over Calgary given I just watched the Blackhawks game against the Oilers. I'm a Pens fan and am disappointed. How do you lose to the CANADIENS? :banghead:
I've never even heard of the U one. No chance of getting that.
25/26. I got U, X, and Z, but stumbled on Q.
I got them all except G, U, and X. I was especially annoyed by U, since I've been there. Spent the night, even.
23/26. Missed U, Q, and Z. Thought Uvalde for U for some illogical reason (never been to SoCal).
Didn't play the quiz yet. My guesses. Probably way wrong.

How do you compile these lists?
I'm not sure how Bruce did it, but I'd start with a list of the letters in the alphabet and the wikipedia page of cities in your state sorted by population. Then you can just fill in the letters.
That's what I'm about to do now for New York; start with filling in N for New York, B for Buffalo, R for Rochester, etc.
Yep, it's as simple as going to the respective Wikipedia list for a state and sorting alphabetically (as is the default). If you want, you can also sort by the population figure from top to bottom, though that is only necessary for lists with a lot of entries per letter.
The U one stumped me as well.
Maybe it deserves a title as the "America's biggest anonymous city"...

Guess I can do Idaho:
A: Ammon (15,540)
B: Boise (226,570)
C: Caldwell (54,660). Close, but no cigar for Coeur d'Alene (50,665)
D: Dalton Gardens (2,389) - I never would have guessed this one, didn't actually realize it was a separate city from CDA or Hayden; my thought was Driggs (1,805)

The smallest on the list is 1,144, which surprises me since Idaho has many cities below 1000, figured at least a couple would squeeze in.
Sporcle has a quiz for California (actually naming up to five for each letter):
https://www.sporcle.com/games/ahlasny/top-5-california-cities-by-letter
It appears they only used cities of 25,000 and up; otherwise there would be an entry for K (three cities) and more entries for I, J, U, and Y.
Including CDPs would add entries for Q (including a county seat) and Z. Nothing for X, though.

How can one city start with 26 different letters?
Typewriter jam.
How many on the board are old enough to even know what that means?

Sporcle has a quiz for California (actually naming up to five for each letter):
https://www.sporcle.com/games/ahlasny/top-5-california-cities-by-letter
It appears they only used cities of 25,000 and up; otherwise there would be an entry for K (three cities) and more entries for I, J, U, and Y.
Including CDPs would add entries for Q (including a county seat) and Z. Nothing for X, though.
I got 50/100.

I'm only 39, and I remember using typewriters.
I remember seeing a typewriter at home, and I'm 27 (or I would be if I had not cancelled my birthday this year).

Quote from: CNGL-Leudimin on August 08, 2020, 03:34:09 AMAlso, I consider the E answer to start with P instead (since in Spanish we usually disregard articles when sorting alphabetically) and thus the actual E answer to be in Oregon instead (unless I'm missing something).
Yep, I missed something: I consider the real E answer to be a suburb of Sacramento.
Forgot the L answer, which also starts with an article and thus I consider to be the real A answer instead of a city in Texas. Thus, and since the next L also starts with an article (and thus is the real V answer instead of a city in Virginia) I consider the real L answer to be in Kentucky bordering Indiana.
I also missed "U" on the original quiz. I was actually close as I typed "Upton" as a guess.

Xenia, population 391
Incorporated on February 16, 1865. It was a drizzly Thursday. Well, maybe it wasn't drizzly, but it was a Thursday.
Interestingly, while Xenia appears to be a village today, it was originally incorporated as a town (https://books.google.com/books?id=if4lcITTJO8C&pg=PA644). I don't know if that means anything.

I was at 18 before I realized that the map was showing the location of the cities.
Yeah the map makes it super easy. Except for U. Only place on the list I'd never heard of. And surprisingly larger than what I would have guessed for U without the map.
What also makes some of the answers a little weird is this goes by population specifically within city limits, not by metro area population. There are a few cities at the center of very large metros that get edged out by cities which are at the center of smaller metros but have wider city limits.

Agreed. For U, if I had to think about it and didn't have the map, I would have guessed Utica, but it gets beat out by about 10K people.
Chris
It would be truly wild if Utica, which been declining for almost a century, was still the largest U- city in the country.
For what it's worth, I've made a spreadsheet covering 1900-2019:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1W9pGOxtVF-dh7Lx4_IzqlAfEPp91kADvKEd9S27nReA/edit?usp=sharing
I don't see any reason that 2020 will differ from 2019.
Changes from decade to decade are highlighted. The source only had top 100 cities prior to 1980; for 1990-2019 if a city was outside the top 100 it is in a smaller font size.
Of note: the following cities have held their position since 1900:
Chicago
Indianapolis
Kansas City
New York
Washington

I've already forgotten what U was.
Eh, not so good for me. Only 20 of 26. I couldn't even remember S or G which is embarrassing.
Also, here's something nifty from X (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.6858713,-83.9295633,3a,53.8y,349.26h,88.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJwC2Og5oOQEO8EZoRtJ8Ww!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en). I won't spoil it in case this isn't new to someone.

That's good. I'm a native Californian and I only got 39/100. We have so many cities that start with S in CA! It's hard to remember the other letters.
