When I was growing up (early to mid-aughts), I used to see a lot of pedestrian signals with the words "WALK/DONT WALK" (no apostrophe, of course). Nowadays, they are practically an endangered species, having been replaced in almost all cases by the "orange hand" and "silver walking figure" pictograms. This started happening around 2006, I remember.
Yet, if you look long and hard enough, you'll still see some with the words. I've seen several throughout the KC area, especially along State Avenue in downtown/inner city KCK. (My understanding is that the signals are replaced on an as-needed basis, so the ones that still have the words tend to be older and relatively low-maintenance, often in low-income areas.)
Where are some other intersections around the country where, in 2020, they still had pedestrian signals with words as opposed to pictograms? I'm sure there are plenty around - you just may have to look a little harder for them.
Massachusetts has some. I would probably say about 1 in 20.
Ashwaubenon, WI still uses the words on signals installed just before the 2000 MUTCD.
Downtown DC has some, such as the ones at New York & H NW (https://goo.gl/maps/dBEbSe1da9888nuj7). (I don't mean to suggest these are the only ones DC has. They're just the ones that readily come to mind because I used to walk past there every day on my way to the Metro.) Here's a clearer image of another one half a block away at 13th & New York NW: https://goo.gl/maps/Nt66yTxXmrukYhzu9

I know. I'm more asking about specific places where people have actually seen them in use.
Albion Street and Broadway in Wakefield Massachusetts still has word ped signals instead of pictographs.

Apologies.
Beautiful downtown Trenton (NJ)
They're still sporadically around Chicago, I can think of four intersections within 8 blocks of our home on the North Side that still have them. Some intersections have a mix of worded messages and LED pictograms on the same intersection.

I'm sure Flint has some because I know of several extremely old traffic signals in Flint that I'm pretty sure include them.
Somewhat off-topic, but I actually remember when on airplanes the No Smoking/Fasten Seat Belt signs were words; I remember seeing them on Boeing 727s and Lockheed L-1011s. I think America West/US Airways even had a few Boeing 757s with worded signs (although the vast majority of 757s have pictograms, and I have never seen a 767 or 777 with worded No Smoking/Fasten Seat Belt signs). The illuminated lavatory signs made the switch later, with Airbus I think being the first to use pictograms for lavatory signs and Boeing later to follow suit.

As far as the signals with the words go, I like the single-housing, three-line variant that's shown in the link above (the one with orange "DONT WALK" on the first two lines, and white "WALK" on the bottom line). I read somewhere that NYC used to have that model of signal from the mid-1980's up until about 2003; however, when we visited the city in 2004, I didn't see any of them, as the pictogram signals had taken over by then.
I also remember seeing that same signal in widespread use on a 2003 visit to Columbus, OH. (Looking at Street View recently, I can say that most of those are gone now in that city.)
What is the model/manufacturer name for that particular unit?

The eastbound direction of Jefferson Ave there previously had a similar small mast arm in August 2018 (https://goo.gl/maps/fYb5fi5SkdmooB6VA), but by May 2019 (https://goo.gl/maps/52kKhWLEkG2HMZYk9) that had been replaced with a single post-mounted signal. I'm guessing something happened to the original mast, but their replacement is an MUTCD violation since it's a through movement with only one signal head.

There are a few others left in the city of Chicago, as well. A few intersections even have ALL pedestrian lights, with the old fashioned 'walk' and 'don't walk' as well!
Pratt and Kedzie(old word ones are on the northeast and southwest corner, and the other 2 types of pedestrian signs/lights are at this intersection too): https://goo.gl/maps/28FGB7iTUeUkkxTLA
Clark and Southport(all old word signs): https://goo.gl/maps/7ZJAPGjPz2eHRGy59

Belmont and Racine(all old word signs): https://goo.gl/maps/k5HxLScstEHguzgQ9
Wouldn't be surprised if there are a few others, I'm forgetting about. And I knew about that one at Lincoln and Roscoe before seeing this thread, and as another person mentioned it, didn't say it in my post.
Any ConnDOT installation prior to the mid-90s is text-only.
Streetview hasn't been updated there since 2015, but Charlottetown, PEI is the only place in Canada I'm aware of that might still have any, including at this (https://www.google.com/maps/@46.2406925,-63.1252777,3a,43.9y,183.59h,82.5t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1szUbtqpRx9QksYyADSht3vg!2e0!5s20151001T000000!7i13312!8i6656) awful franken-intersection.
They seem to have replaced almost every single pedestrian signal in town since then, but Regina, Saskatchewan still had at least one (https://www.google.com/maps/@50.4503993,-104.6182044,3a,50.6y,250.8h,82.04t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1scnRvMfR2o-dvGxWqkKFm4g!2e0!5s20090601T000000!7i13312!8i6656) in 2009.
There might some more Canadian examples, but these are the only ones I've happened to see on Streetview.
Tacoma, WA (https://goo.gl/maps/6DKuVn8DjeUMfq9v8)
https://goo.gl/maps/fSYu1Tp9rKjM51CW8
The only ones still left in Utah that I'm aware of are up in Logan. This was on 100 West at 100 North (I think?) in 2019
(https://i.imgur.com/rb0CzHH.jpeg)
There are a few more along 100 West there. Unfortunately, when I was up there last it looked like several of them were about to be replaced. I'll be in Logan in about a month so I'll be able to check and see if any survived.
If there are any others elsewhere in the state, they are almost certainly not on a state highway - UDOT loves replacing things and traffic lights are no exception.

I believe that signal is the oldest in Tacoma. Surprisingly, it does seem to be actuated.
There is another heading out towards Puyallup on River Road (WA-167)
at the Milroy Bridge (https://goo.gl/maps/qTnG2QHT1ZMLX8go7). Only two of the six ped signals have symbols.
All throughout Guymon, Oklahoma they have old word-based pedestrian signals with "walk/don't walk." About 80% of the traffic signals are like that and also have incandescent bulbs for the main signal heads. They are very dim and hard to see.
The pedestrian signal lenses are very faded and in most cases it's hard to make out the words "walk" and "don't walk." The ped signals just look like orange and white blobs.
I made a quick video about it:
Here's also another example (https://goo.gl/maps/BFL4USHDs8BwZKNF8) of the "walk/don't walk" pedestrian signal consolidated into one housing further north on Main Street.

This one is really odd because the pedestrian signal is above the vehicle signal.
I've been through there - I figured that particular mast arm was left over from the original road configuration (Crow Canyon Road was widened sometime in the 1970s) - you'll notice the streetlight is of a different design than the rest at that intersection.
There's still a few worded pedestrian signals around Alabama. Last I saw these cities & towns still had some in service:
Decatur, AL
Athens, AL
Bessemer, AL
Tuscumbia, AL
Florence, AL
Centre, AL
Gadsden, AL
Calera, AL
Arab, AL
Talladega, AL
I also recall Irondale, AL, having a pair, but I think they're gone now? Street view there hasn't been updated since 2017, so it ain't much help.
Outside of Alabama, I've seen them in these places, or at least had them shown to me by a friend:
Vidalia, GA
McRae-Helena, GA
Manchester, TN
Shelbyville, TN
Carlisle, PA
Teaneck, NJ
Rocky Top, TN
Washington, D.C. may still have some worded 3M ped signals hiding out around the city as well if you know where to look.
Bit of a shame seeing them disappear over the years though, as I always enjoy seeing them in service. Grew up with them here in Huntsville, but they're sadly all gone now. Glad I've been able to buy a few of my own to enjoy over the years.
I miss when the WALK was green instead of white. :bigass:
Then Millburn, NJ you once had a red WAIT instead of DON'T on top with a changed color WALK on the bottom on a ped signal on Essex Street in Downtown.
Not that I'm complaining about present, but from reminiscing the past it was cool to once be part of.
Michigan still has some worded pedestrian signals that are still in service. Here's a few intersections that have them.

Bonus: Also features a four-sided "Left Turn Lane (down arrow)" instead of the modern "(curved arrow) Only."
Good question. Thinking about it now, I haven't seen any in a while.

You could probably find a lot of these in clifton and passaic. It seems like they don't believe in infrastructure upgrades

Pretty amazing to see a striped walk lens still in service in 2024!

I recently discovered that the northern portion of the Providence, Rhode Island, metro area, has many worded pedestrian signals. Pawtucket, in particular, has multiple intersections that have single-section signals with bi-modal fiber-optic indications!
Here's a few Google Maps link to a few of them:
Central and Broadway (US-1) (https://maps.app.goo.gl/uyadzJzPh7QBpWfv7)
Bend and Division (https://maps.app.goo.gl/WcPsWh4mEusTG9Mb8)
Central and Benefit (https://maps.app.goo.gl/UzbiRfT2WmTbCbUWA)
There were a few in Athens, Alabama as of last year. Tornadoes went through the downtown a few months ago so they may have been replaced.

They should still be there, neither of the intersections with them were hit by the tornado. I know at least they were still around on January 1st, after the tornado had hit.
Given that they only have six worded pedestrian signals now (four 9 inch ones, and a pair of 12 inch ones), I suspect they may all be replaced at some point though.
Vincennes, IN still had some when I was there in December. I didn't get any pictures of them, but GSV went through fairly recently: 6th and Main (https://maps.app.goo.gl/VZFB5F4nB18sFCdz7), 6th and Busseron (https://maps.app.goo.gl/37pRCvoXVdMKuMbs5), 6th and Hart (https://maps.app.goo.gl/b1TZbNvv6REC3yqt7)
Longview, WA has a lot remaining, especially on 12th and 14th Ave:

Love those 9 inch peds, doesn't seem like they're too well maintained though.
A colleague at the City of Chicago once clued me in that this intersection has some of the oldest signals in the whole city. Sure enough, it has some textual crosswalk signals.

That intersection as a whole is a gem! As far as pedestrian signals go, most of the worded ones there are the very rare 9 inch TSI pedestrian signals, a rare 12 inch bullseye-era Econolite pedestrian signal, and a sixth worded 9 inch pedestrian signal mounted between a pair of finned Marbelite signals. The two symbol peds there are a 12 inch LFE and a 9 inch Durasig(?).

It's a 9-inch Alusig
The cities of Moline IL, Oklahoma City, and Aberdeen WA, still have a good number of worded pedestrian signals (with the Oklahoma City area having the most out of the three).
Bellaire OH has a lot of abandoned worded peds. The intersections they were at used to be traffic signal controlled, but they were removed between 2009 and 2015. There are nine intersections that are like this in that town!
Hastings, Nebraska, also has some worded peds. One of them has a super rare WAIT lens! (https://maps.app.goo.gl/mG5iH9yvEN4nt3ci9)

Amazing find! Didn't even know there were still any old Wait/Walk signals outside of Winter Park, FL.
^^ And panning around show no pedestrian signals on any of the other quadrants.

Not really in the OKC area (more in Tulsa's metro area), but Bristow, OK's main drag has about five worded pedestrian signals in a row:

Update! For all of those who thought Sheridan & Argyle was an amazing intersection with old signal memorabilia, I have to correct myself. The intersection my colleague mentioned was not actually Sheridan & Argyle. I was mistaken. The actual oldest signalized intersection in Chicago is Sheridan & Leland, and it has signals that are EVEN OLDER! They are so old, they predate crosswalk signals entirely.

This goes a bit off the subject of crosswalk signals, but the audience of this thread is going to be full of fans of old signals. So here you go.
^^ There is still the green signal with black visors around.
A couple weeks ago, I got photos and videos of Dearborn's worded pedestrian signals. Some of them had either one or both burnt out sections.
Two worded pedestrian signals were recently replaced at the intersection of Outer and Monroe. If it weren't for that, this intersection would have had the (unofficial) state record for having the most worded pedestrian signals for an intersection in Michigan.
Fullerton, CA had a WALK/DONT WALK at Harbor x Valencia until 2021.
