Title: Routes that cross the same state border multiple times
Post by: thspfc on September 07, 2020, 12:35:16 PM
Sorry if we've had a thread about this before. I searched but it's tricky to know the exact keywords needed.
What are some routes that are in one state, enter a different state, and then go back into the first state, therefore crosssing the same border twice?
US-2 and US-141 both cross the Wisconsin/Michigan border three times. MN-23 crosses the Minnesota/Wisconsin border twice. Others?

The topography of the area forces I-24 to cross in to GA from TN, to later cross back in to TN.

US 395 crosses from California, into Nevada, and back into California.

US-50 crosses from West Virginia into Maryland, then back into West Virginia, then into Virginia and DC before re entering Maryland again.

Not the same border but honorable mention to I-55 as the only interstate to cross the Mississippi twice.

US 212 crosses the Wyoming border 4 times, 3 of those from Montana and the last one from South Dakota.

I-86 (NY 17) crosses from Pennsylvania to New York, then dips into Pennsylvania for a mile or two.

The irregular nature of the VA/WV border makes this somewhat common in the area:

VA/WV 102 crosses the VA/WV border four times, and ends at the WV border in Bluefield. Does this count as 4.5 times?
VA/WV 311 crosses the border three times.
VA/WV 259 crosses the border twice, with the northern crossing riding along the state line.
US-460 crosses the VA/WV border twice.

US-119 ends up crossing the WV/KY border 5 times during and immediately before its concurrency with US-52.

US 191 crosses the Montana-Wyoming border three times - once at the west entrance to Yellowstone, and twice as it's following the Gallatin River north towards Big Sky and Bozeman.

North of the border, doesn't the Alaska Highway cross between BC and the Yukon several times? That's what came to mind for me.

US 340 crosses the VA/WV border twice; once north of Berryville and again near Harper's Ferry.  I-684 crosses the NY/CT border twice.  NY 120A both crosses and straddles the CT/NY border for most of its route.  MA 114A begins and ends in RI, but spends 95% of its route in MA.  And ME 113 and 113B cross the ME/NH border several times.

US 62 - 3 times in/out of TX
US 180 - 3 times in/out of TX

US 212 crosses the WY/MT line up to 4 times. One of these is also the Northernmost highway in Wyoming (as the border isn't exactly at the 45th parallel, but weaves across it)

US 54 and 62 only cross the TX/NM border twice. US 180 does cross it three times indeed (however two of them are the same as US 62's)

Was hoping someone mentioned that one.

I-684 also crosses from NY into CT and back, but it's a bit less interesting than the I-86 example because it's entirely within NY outside of that short dip into CT, unlike I-86, which also has a terminus in PA several hundred miles away from the dip. You could conceivably enter I-86 in PA and exit I-86 in PA three hours later, while 99% of your driving was in NY.

Which reminds me, Ravens Rock Road (Clarke County SR-601 when starting at VA-7) crosses the VA/WV border four times, and comes back up and touches the border once.  It starts out in Clarke County, crosses over into Jefferson County (WV), then only a few hundred feet later crosses into Loudoun County (VA).  I'm pretty sure that Ravens Rocks Road stays as Loudoun County SR-601, since the southern section of Blueridge Mountain Road (still SR-601) also remains as Loudoun SR-601 when it crosses over for a short distance near Mount Weather.

If I recall correctly, all of the homes on the West Virginia side are completely segregated from the rest of the state, such that they have Bluemont (Loudoun County VA) addresses and Berryville (Clarke County VA) phone numbers.  But the kids still go to school in Jefferson County.

MD/DE 54 (appropriately named Delmar Road) hops back & forth across the southern MD/DE boundary, and in places runs directly atop the border (such as where it intersects US 13 (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.4559023,-75.5583457,3a,75y,202.85h,88.36t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1siB72WgtZmKm3e81TQpuCGQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?hl=en) - what I find interesting here is the ground signage appears to be DelDOT installs while the signal is an MDOT SHA install).

Sorry, missed the "same" part.  Oh well.  If that's all that happens to me on my way through the wild-wild-west of the internet in a day, I'm doing pretty good.

US-61 crosses the Mississippi four times.  Just outside the Twin Cities, LaCrosse, Dubuque and Memphis.

Houston County 2/Allamakee County A11 crosses twice each between Minnesota and Iowa, from Eizten, MN to New Albin, IA.

US 395 crosses from California, into Nevada, and back into California.

Its exit numbering is a bit unique:
* the CA 70 interchange (milepost 361) is Exit 8 (8 miles from Nevada state line).
* the CA 203 interchange at Mammoth (milepost ~259) has no exit number ("Exit -94" wouldn't fly)
* same for South Landing Rd, CA 14, Brown Rd, CA 178... the south half of US 395 is treated as if it isn't (and won't be) a freeway

Edit: old CT 124 in North Canaan dipped into, back out of, and back into Massachusetts. No indication of Mass. ever designating a route here.

Yes it does, with another follow up jaunt into BC as YT 1 after switching from BC 97.

Another international example: India's NH 27 between Bihar and West Bengal. Every online map (OSM, Google, Bing, MQ, RMN) disagrees on where the state border is through this region, but all agree on a minimum of Bihar-West Bengal-BH-WB, with OSM showing quite a few more border jumps.

Before India and Bangladesh sorted out their enclave/exclave issues in the last year or two, it's surprising that no single road passed through the enclaves and exclaves  a number of times. There were parts of India inside Bangladesh inside India inside Bangladesh and maybe even one more iteration of that. The two countries each gave a little and took a little and now have a contiguous border. People were given the choice of getting help in moving or accepting citizenship in the country that took the territory. I'm not entirely sure how it is working out.

From what I've read, the 'clave exchange between India and Bangladesh seems to have worked out, with only one Bengali exclave remaining in India, and India permanently leasing an easement to Bangladesh so Bengals can pass back and forth with no issue.
